Forced patience that the situation created shattered the moment the four-winged bird was no longer a threat. Chester collected the blood that rushed out of his throat, spat it to the side through blood-stained lips, and snapped his gaze skyward.
The High Angel glared at the Lesser Angel above, filled with anger and shame.
His helmet hummed with mana.
Sunlight immortalized Chester’s snarling face as he opened his mouth and roared.
Boom—!
Anger drove him insane as he smashed his shield against Kai’s scimitar. There was no longer any thought inside his mind. Just the primal desire to kill—and tear the Lesser Angel to shreds for being unable to understand that this tournament cannot be won by him.
He swung his sickle in a wide arc, but missed and got kneed in the liver.
Pain lanced through his side.
Chester gritted his teeth even harder and became even more feral.
Both exchanged blows mid-air, creating a violent spark every time their weapons met.
’I already injected myself—with an enhancing serum. My body is stronger. My mana is more robust. Everything about me has been elevated to a higher degree.’ Chester’s eyes bulged and reddened from how hard he was pushing himself. ’And this fucking Lesser Angel... This little, annoying insect is stalemating me?!’
After another exchange, Chester spun mid-air and slammed into the red barrier.
He looked across and saw Kai was hanging on the other side, still with the same icy look.
Like everything that had happened didn’t trouble him at all.
"I refuse to believe this!!"
Swoosh—!
Chester channelled mana into his winged boots and blasted forward like a living avalanche.
His mana flared everywhere as he poured everything he had. His sickle slammed against Kai’s Blood-phantom Scimitar, and he drove forward, expecting Kai to give ground. But this time, Kai didn’t move.
Only then did Chester realize he couldn’t outmuscle Kai anymore.
It was almost like Kai was growing stronger the longer the battle went on.
Kai front-kicked the shield away and spun his body, making a circular swing.
In the nick of time, Chester front-flipped over the arc, dodging the circular slash perfectly.
And as Kai lifted his gaze to see what his next move was, he realized that Chester had vanished like a passing wind. His eyes searched frantically, but the next thing he knew was a sharp pain that smashed into his head and then sent him to the ground.
Before impact, Kai managed to kick a big slab of stone and changed his falling momentum.
Kai slid across the ground, managing to avoid more damage, but he was not in the clear.
His eyes frantically scanned the battlefield, searching for Chester.
But he was nowhere to be seen.
"Krrhk!"
Sensing the shift in the wind, Kai raised his scimitar, and his eyes widened when sparks flew across his vision as he was hurled backward. He stumbled several steps, processing what had happened, and then felt the air shift again.
A powerful surge of wind struck him from behind.
Before he could recover, something hard and scaled smashed into his chest.
Clang—!
Kai vomited a mouthful of blood as he could feel his ribcage crack inside his chest.
Decisively, as if not wanting Kai to fall, the dark energy inside him mended the cracks, but he could feel the heavy toll immediately. A large portion of his stamina was dragged away along with it.
If he wasn’t careful, he’d be teetering on the edge of exhaustion before the fight was over.
He can’t afford too much damage.
Just then, a figure materialized across from him.
More blood came out of his mouth as he watched Chester emerge from invisibility.
"I have been patient enough," Chester said with restrained hate in his voice. His body was shaking from head to toe as he glared at Kai—with bulging eyes. "I have given you too many chances to give up. I will show mercy no longer, Lesser Angel!"
Swish—!
Chester charged in.
He disappeared at the second step.
Kai raised his scimitar and kept his eyelids peeled open, and his senses flared.
Above? Sides? Where?!
Not even giving him any clue to work with, something hacked at his right thigh, forcing a grunt out of his mouth. Then, he heard a windy sound from the left and swung, but he hit only air as his back was raked open.
Kai hissed in pain.
His barely mended lacerations on his back were opened again.
"Do you really think you can defeat me?!"
Clang—!
Another hit sent Kai stumbling.
"Do you really think—you can somehow win this tournament?! You have no chance from the very start!"
Slash—!
A sickle hooked Kai’s left calf and pulled, opening a big, bleeding cut there.
"You can’t even determine where I’m coming from!"
Crash—!
Kai crashed forward and tumbled across the ground. His combat suit split open, and the cold, uneven stone scraped hard against his skin. He skidded a full ten yards before finally sliding to a stop.
Behind, not too far away, Chester materialized again.
"Some people warned me to be careful. Said you might actually defeat me in this tournament." He glanced down at his sickle—still dripping with gore and efflux. "They thought I was going to lose. Me. Now they will understand that they underestimated me. That they overestimated you."
Chester brandished his wet sickle, painting the ground with Kai’s lifeblood. "I am the strongest freshman, not you. I am the one who deserved to be the Red Prince, not you. I am the fucking star of this year, not you!"
Out of nowhere, Chester watched Kai strike his temple with the base of his scimitar.
He didn’t do it lightly—hard enough for Chester to hear the dull thud.
"Have you finally lost your mind?" Chester asked with a chuckle. "Are you ready to admit to everyone that you’re weaker than me?"
"It sounded to me like you’re trying to convince yourself that you are," Kai spat the blood in his mouth aside and rose slowly. His weary shoulders wobbled as he turned to face Chester again, and then his black eyes squinted, betraying the smile behind his mask. "Are you scared of me, Chester?"
Chester recoiled as if the question was a physical blow.
His lips behind the mask trembled, and then he gritted his teeth.
"Let’s see you act arrogant after I carve you up to pieces!" Chester roared and vanished again.
His helmet hummed with mana again, and then he vanished like a reflection folding into the light. From the very beginning, every attack had been a lie. Each angle a feint. He did all of it to catch Kai off guard.
Now, he decided to change it up.
Now, he decided to charge straight in a straight line.
’I’ll take his arms,’ Chester thought inside. ’I can’t kill him. I need to humiliate him. And taking his arms—and then his legs should be more than enough. Nobody would respect the armless and legless person.’
Fixing on his sword arm first, Chester charged even faster using his winged boots and struck.
Clang—!
Chester went over Kai and then stopped at the far end.
His eyes behind the mask slowly widened as he turned around, only to find Kai’s right arm was still intact. Even though he was certain that his blade would’ve cut the arm, somehow, it was still intact.
In fact, instead of feeling the softness of flesh, he felt something hard.
’Did... Did he just parry my sickle?’ Chester thought in disbelief. ’At the last possible second?’
"What happened?" Kai looked over his shoulder, meeting Chester’s gaze. And then, he turned his body around properly. "I thought you were going to cut me up into pieces. Go on then, I’d like to see you try."
’A fluke...’ Chester’s eyes sharpened again. ’It must be a fluke. Let’s do it again!’
Instead of changing his attack pattern, he decided to double down.
Kai must’ve predicted that he would’ve come in a straight line earlier, out of luck.
No way that it was because he sensed it.
Chester would use the same path, the same angle—fooling Kai by doing the exact same thing. Surely this time, it would work. After all, Kai couldn’t see him while he was invisible, exactly like a moment earlier.
He activated his helmet’s ability, and the world erased him.
As if his body was merely an illusion, he disappeared.
One moment he was there; the next, he was nothing but a disturbance in the air, a phantom of wind and fading light. Chester didn’t attack instantly—he waited. Letting the wind affinity from his shield whisper through the broken arena, scattering sound in false directions.
Left, right, behind.
Chester painted a lie of movement for Kai to chase.
But unlike earlier, Kai didn’t chase. Didn’t panic.
He stood perfectly still. Motionless. The Blood-phantom Scimitar hung loosely in his grip, and his breathing was shallow but steady. No frantic glances. No desperate searching. Kai simply waited for Chester to strike.
And in the tense silence, Chester hesitated for a fraction of a breath.
’Is he... looking at me?’
In the suspended moment, he noticed that Kai’s ink-black eyes were still fixed on him.
Chester shifted his weight from side to side, silent as shadow and stirring not a breath of air—but no matter which way he moved, Kai’s eyes remained fixated on him. He was invisible. He had activated his helmet’s ability, and yet somehow, it felt as though Kai could see him.
’No—I must be imagining things. He can’t see me earlier, so how can he see me now?’
Must be the weary mind playing tricks.
Or perhaps it was only an illusion.
Kai’s black eyes blended with the shadows beneath his mask—making it seem as though his eyes could track Chester’s invisible form. Either way, it didn’t matter. Kai was wounded, and exhausted beyond measure.
This was the end.
Chester lowered his stance and poured mana into his winged boots. The wings flapped hard, but the shifting wind emanating from the shield masked the sound. And since Kai has no mana, it would be hard for him to sense the mana gathering in the winged boots.
The distance between them was nothing.
It would be easy for Chester to cross it in a blink and sever Kai’s right arm at the shoulder.
’I’m running out of mana, but it didn’t matter—this would finish everything.’
Swoosh—!
Chester blasted toward the Lesser Angel, and the world stretched into a smear.
He swung his sickle with every ounce of strength he had, eyes locked on Kai’s right arm. And then he blitzed past Kai in a silent, invisible streak, skidding across the broken ground of the battlefield as his body began to rematerialize.
A smile touched his lips.
But then something warm splattered against his face.
"Hm?"
