Chester burst towards Kai, and he swung his sickle savagely as he streaked past.

As a smile crawled onto his face, something splattered against his cheek.

It was warm and smelled coppery.

"Hm?"

Chester turned his head slowly to his left, and his world shattered. His smile died as his eyes watched his shield arm go. It slid from his shoulder in a clean, bloody line before gravity seized it, and the limb dropped to the stone with a wet, final thud.

More blood came next, bursting from the wound in violent arcs, painting the air crimson.

His shield clattered to the ground, still strapped to the severed arm.

And Chester could only stare, comprehending what he was seeing—as his own blood rained down around him. Once his nerves registered the excruciating pain, his face twisted in agony. A scream tore out of his throat and echoed across the entire stadium.

It took longer for the crowd to grasp what happened.

However, the moment the crowd did, a shocked uproar exploded.

Every single student looked at Chester and then down at his severed arm and then gasped.

As a Supernal of Perseus, he was able to disappear completely from sight—leaving barely any trace. It was a powerful ability. Only Supernals with extreme senses could pinpoint where he was while the ability was active.

Not many in the crowd could sense Chester.

Only a handful.

But even then, somehow, Kai was able to locate Chester perfectly.

And more than that, he could also counterattack flawlessly and sever Chester’s arm.

"Holy shit!" Bryan exclaimed in shock. "How did he do that?!"

"Bree, what did he do?" Matilda snapped at Bree; her eyes widened in shock. She was now aware that Bree was somewhat connected to Kai—so she must know what he used. "How can he see Chester?"

Of course, Matilda was the one who knew Kai’s abilities the most.

She had fought alongside him several times already, and practically knew everything he had.

But she didn’t know Kai had this kind of ability.

One Legacy Imprint that she knew Kai possessed was the one that summoned black stars. He used it to detect the area around him and fired dark lances whenever he wanted. But Kai has no mana.

Bree had given him a suppressed mana potion, but that barely gave him any mana.

His mana reserve was practically still empty.

And even if he had enough mana to use that Legacy Imprint, there was no sign that he had.

No black stars drifting in the air. No pulse of mana.

It was the reason why Matilda was completely taken aback by this.

"I-I don’t know." Bree stammered and shook her head. "I don’t know how he did that."

Meanwhile, Kai straightened his back and brandished his bloodied scimitar, cleaning it of Chester’s blood. He did the exact same motion as Chester did earlier. And then—he turned to look at the High Angel who was now screaming in pain.

He was holding the squirting stump where his arm had been, trying to stop the bleeding.

Sensing Chester while his invisibility was active was impossible.

At least in Kai’s current condition, it was really hard to do.

Not only was he sluggish, but his mana was also drained, dulling his senses’ sensitivity.

But Kai remembered something.

In the Second Sky, a devious strike to his temple had broken the cranial nerves inside his head and stolen his sight. But the Night Mutation—woven into the Reckless Ruin Ending Fragment responded almost instantly, mending the damage and altering his vision temporarily.

And during that temporary condition, he was able to see through a deeper layer of the world.

He could see the flow of mana.

It was how he even saw the roots branching out from the seniors’ Divine Locks.

Kai decided to tap into that condition again, thinking that he could see Chester with it, and he was right. He could see through Chester’s invisibility as clear as day, and then counterattacked at the last second.

And since Chester was feeling confident, he would never anticipate being slashed.

"Accept it, Chester." Kai’s cold voice crawled through the air, forcing Chester to snap over his shoulder, glaring at Kai with reddened eyes. "You and I are never equal. You’ve always been beneath me. Don’t trick yourself into thinking that you’re higher than me simply because of a class that was bestowed by the sky.

"Now, however," Kai inhaled deeply, and then raised his scimitar readily. "After this—after I defeat you and become the Red Prince, everyone will finally know for certain. You were never equal to me."

Chester knew.

Deep down, he knew that what Kai was saying was nothing but the truth.

Right now, he was given every advantage that the academy could give. An enhancing serum, unfairly powerful gear, and the full weight of the institution and students behind him. Kai, on the other hand, had been tortured, denied rest, and drained of mana.

If he was truly the superior one, then why would he need those things to defeat Kai?

If he was truly the superior one, he would simply defeat Kai in a fair fight.

He knew that without the academy, he had no chance against Kai.

Perhaps he would lose as badly as Barbara did earlier.

But to have the truth be shoved into his face so clearly and so undeniably was painful.

Rage took over as the last string of sanity snapped in his mind.

"Lesser Angel!!"

Chester charged forward, and Kai met him head-on.

Their blades collided in a shrieking storm of steel—five vicious slashes exchanged in a matter of seconds. Each one fueled by fury, hatred, and the desperate will to win. The charged air in between them cracked with sparks.

The ground beneath them grew slick with blood.

For the first time, Chester was fighting in a disadvantaged situation.

One arm gone, his balance was shot, and the whispers of the damned clawed at the edges of his mind, pulling his focus and unravelling his composure. The Fatal Whispering Wound was affecting him, and he became more sluggish.

Kai had been in that situation for most of the time ever since he became an Angel.

And he learned to endure.

Chester, on the other hand, crumbled under the pressure.

He swung wide. Kai stepped inside and carved a red line across his side—and the whispers howled louder. Chester staggered, but persisted in fighting. Kai ducked under the counterattack and drove his fist into Chester’s stomach.

And then, he dragged his scimitar across Chester’s torso in a spray of crimson.

Chester fell back, teeth bared, blocking swing after swing with his sickle.

Every clash sent a tremor through his bones. He was being pushed back—pushed back hard.

The fight devolved. It was no longer a battle between trained warriors, but a brawl of savagely wide swings and raw muscle. Kai raised his scimitar overhead and brought it down with all he had.

Chester swung his stump for an arm, splattering blood onto Kai’s face. Then, Chester parried and kicked Kai in the gut, forcing blood from his mouth before following up by carving a gash across his shoulder in return.

Kai grunted but didn’t fall.

Both of them were slowing now; their lungs were burning, and their movements wobbly.

The arena was a mess of blood and gore, and the crowd became a distant roar at the edge of their fading focus.

Kai lunged again, raising his scimitar for another vertical swing.

Chester saw it coming, and in that instant, he saw something that made his eyes flash with excitement. An opportunity that Tyche, the Goddess of Luck, had bestowed. He twisted and brought the sickle up to meet it.

The sound of shattering steel rang across the stadium.

And it was then that Kai’s eyes widened.

The Blood-phantom Scimitar, his trusted blade, broke apart before his very eyes.

The broken shards spun through the air and glittered like dying stars.

Chester’s face split into a bloodied grin behind the mask. "I win!"

He struck, aiming for the throat.

But Kai already moved. He instinctively leaned back and snapped his foot upward. It caught Chester’s sickle mid-swing and knocked it from his grip, sending it spinning skyward in a wild, silver arc.

Roar—!

Chester’s eyes flew wide at the sound of a painful squeal. Kai’s did too.

High above, the four-winged bird was falling.

It had been trying to keep flying all this time, and its wings finally gave up. And the spinning sickle, wild and unaimed, surprisingly caught the Heart of Dragon from its talon. The golden orb tumbled free, and both finalists watched it shoot skyward.

Their path to victory was opened, but only one could claim it.

Bam—!

Chester’s boot slammed into Kai’s chest, and then he blasted skyward.

He operated his winged boots to the limit to fly.

But his mana was nearly spent, and the speed that had once come so easily now dragged.

Still, Chester climbed. Eyes fixed on the Heart of Dragon. His ticket to victory.

’Reach it. Reach it! As long as I reached it... As long as I win, everything will fall into place!’

Below, Kai stopped his stagger.

He was seeing fireworks, but he squared his shoulders anyway.

A mere Lesser Angel.

Countless wrongs had been done to him from simply being a Lesser Angel. He tried to change his class once, but the academy stopped him. Adding another unfairness—to his bleak world. And this was his second attempt to elevate his class.

Kai reached for his Primordial Locks, and they responded by exerting mana.

All the mana he had managed to gather in the brief time he’d been given.

The winged boots he was wearing thrummed to life for the first time throughout the battle.

As their wings stretched and flared open, Kai inhaled slowly through his nose and raised his eyes to the sky. He thought back to the devastating day when he was delivered the news that he couldn’t become an Angel.

Thought about the rage and the hatred that burned him from within.

And Bella’s face flashed in his mind like a fond memory.

He was the one carrying his bloodline; being strong was not an option.

Boom—!

Kai’s winged boots flapped once with all the mana they had and blasted him skyward like a rising star. His form cut through the air at a speed that many found hard to follow. A burst of speed that carried the hope of a better future.

Above, Chester smiled as the Heart of Dragon was within arm’s reach.

But a blur streaked past.

His eyes shifted up and widened.

Kai was right above, and the Heart of Dragon in his hand.

In that suspended moment, Kai shifted his gaze and locked eyes with the Chancellor.

He saw the shock bloom in the Chancellor’s eyes, and the satisfaction surged up his throat.

The Lesser Angel lifted the Heart of Dragon, beaming with gold light and radiance. His mask tilted up. Sunlight bathed Kai’s face as he opened his mouth and declared his triumph with a victorious roar.
