I am the Only Son of Nyx

Chapter 267: Change in Attitude

Kai grasped the Heart of Dragon in his hand.

He should’ve won.

All that was left to do was announce him as the winner of the Dragon Ring tournament.

But Chester seemed to have another thing up his sleeve—scorched earth.

Boom—!

Kai vomited blood more blood as another blast exploded outward from Chester’s body, and it pressed him into the wall harder. Even with his arms crossed in an attempt to shield himself from the blast, the force seeped through and struck his body directly.

How is he corrupted?!

As he stared at Chester through the constant mana pressure, he saw the signs.

He saw the bruising, the black veins, and the solid blue eyes.

Indications that Chester had fallen to the corruption from the Blue Void and was now going through a transformation to become its minion. Everyone in the whole entire world practically knows these signs.

Corruption has always been the main problem involving the Ground or Sky Gates.

But one could only be corrupted when exposed to a corrupt aura from a Star Beast.

Chester couldn’t possibly be corrupted right now.

Even though the four-winged bird was a Scourge-class Star Beast, it was heavily suppressed.

It didn’t emanate any corrupt aura, which was why Kai and Chester didn’t even need to utilize their Halos throughout the entire final round. Regardless, this was really strange. But then, he thought of someone.

Must be Him.

On the side, Ragnar rose from his seat and stared at Chester with shock in his eyes.

’Corruption...?’ He questioned inside, confused as to how this was even possible. Chester was fucking a female student last night; he had checked, so this should be impossible. ’No—This... This must be His doing.’

Ragnar was the one who met with the people of the Demigod who wanted Kai dead.

Naturally, he was the one who made a deal with them to make sure Kai would not win. It was he who talked with the representative of the Demigod. But he made the mistake of thinking that the representative only talked with him.

No—the representative also talked with Chester behind his back.

And somehow, Chester was given something that would corrupt him when he lost.

A failsafe to make sure that Kai would die.

Ragnar’s eyes shifted and then locked with the Chancellor’s.

He felt an icy shiver run down his spine—the moment their eyes met. Considering that he was the one who oversaw Kai’s downfall in the Dragon Ring tournament, the Chancellor naturally suspected him of doing whatever this was.

Run.

That’s all Ragnar wanted to do right now.

But he held his ground and forced his head to shake—gesturing to the Chancellor that he had nothing to do with what was going on. The Chancellor might despise the sheer idea of a Lesser Angel rising to become an Angel, but he hated outsiders tampering with the academy more.

So, Ragnar knew that he was furious behind the mask.

’Running away would be the death of me.’ Ragnar clenched his fists at his sides. ’I need to come clean.

’Running away would be the death of me.’ Ragnar’s fists clenched at his sides. ’I have to come clean. It’s the only way out.’

On the other side of the stadium, Matilda already leaped down to the lower seats and placed her hands against the streaming red wall. She felt the mana inside it and frowned—it was far more immense than anything she had ever felt.

Regardless, she tried punching the barrier.

Her knuckles slammed hard against it, but it caused nothing. In fact, it only hurt her hand.

It was akin to a normal person punching a boulder.

Seeing Kai pinned against the wall hard and Chester already turning to face him, Matilda did not pause and summoned her shield. She struck the barrier with the circular edge, again and again, but the result remained the same.

Nothing.

Matilda’s attempt simply amounted to nothing against the newly steaming red energy wall.

Just then, the others landed behind her.

"Stop it, Matilda." Bree pulled on her shoulder. "You can’t break it."

"But we need to get in! We need to help him!" Matilda continued without stopping. "He needs our help!"

"It’s useless. You’re only tiring yourself out. We need to be smart and find another way."

"You find out that other way. I’m going to keep going."

Bree tried to remain calm and thought of a way to break through the red wall, but she simply couldn’t think of any way. And with each second that passed while watching Kai struggle to even stand inside the arena, the panic began to surface.

Both Dorian and Bryan were also fretting a way, but they also didn’t know what to do.

Even before the red wall was steaming like this, they probably couldn’t break it.

So, this situation left them helpless.

Out of nowhere, a commanding voice cut through the chaos from above.

"Get out of the way."

Almost instantly, the four of them looked up and saw the bald professor hovering overhead, suspended on winged boots. His figure was silhouetted against the hazy red glow of the red wall of energy.

Even though the mask concealed his face, one could see his eyes burned with measured fury.

And the aura bleeding from his frame was not the strained pulse of a professor on duty.

It was the unfiltered presence of a warrior preparing to strike.

At this point, everyone knew that the tournament had been jeopardized. High Angel Chester, or whatever now wore his body, was the cause. And as a professor of Eventide Academy, the bald professor wouldn’t allow outsiders to tamper with their sacred tournament.

Regardless of the fact that Kai was a Lesser Angel who challenged the currents, challenged the natural order, he was still a student of Eventide Academy. That made him theirs. Their problem. Their responsibility.

No matter what Kai did, the academy would handle it, not outsiders.

Matilda, Bree, Dorian, and Bryan scrambled back, merging with the watching students.

As they moved, Bree’s eyes swept the arena’s perimeter and saw a surprising sight.

The other professors were already in position—spaced evenly around the red steaming wall, their silhouettes stark against the light. All of them were facing inward and were ready to force their way into the arena.

Boom—!

Once the students were cleared, the bald professor’s body erupted.

Mana exploded from him in a fire of raw power that dwarfed anything an Awakened or even an Aspirant Supernal rank should possess. It rolled off his frame in waves, and then pressed against the air.

Like a domino effect, the other professors answered in kind.

One by one, their auras detonated in a chain reaction.

Each a different shade.

Each churned the atmosphere into a swirling maelstrom of color and pressure.

He raised his hand and balled it hard until his knuckles turned white. The mana that surged across his body messily collapsed inward in an instant, folding into that point—with nothing short of immaculate control of mana.

It was over in a second.

Slowly, his arm transformed—the skin hardened to ash-grey stone first.

And then, cracks split across the surface to expose a glowing red heat right underneath.

It was his Legacy Imprint, activated to its fullest extent.

But the bald professor didn’t stop there.

At his solar plexus, his main Divine Lock flared to life. It gleamed with a light far deeper than the Divine Locks any student possessed. More profound and stronger, like an upgrade of the regular Divine Locks.

And with it, his aura exploded even stronger.

It swelled ten inches from his body, swaying like a living flame—and the air around it hazed with shimmering heat. And then, he gave a signal through a nod before blasting forward with lightning-fast speed.

Following his lead, the other professors also charged.

Each one unleashed the full might of their attacks straight at the red energy wall.

Bam—!

The bald professor’s fist slammed into the barrier with a detonation that split the air. A blood-red discharge erupted from the point of impact—and all around the arena, more detonations followed.

Each professor unloaded their Legacy Imprints in a coordinated assault.

Bree and the others threw their arms up, bracing themselves against the gale of displaced air and raw mana. Once the light receded and the echoes died, they lowered their arms in a slow and careful manner and then stared.

A collective gasp spread across them and the students around them.

Despite the professors’ attempt, the red wall remained intact. Unscathed.

As the bald professor staggered back, his eyes flickered with something cold and unfamiliar.

It was disbelief.

"Just how can this even be possible?" He rasped as his forehead creased. "Who’s behind this?"

The failure of the professors’ collective assault against the red energy wall sent a shockwave across the entire stadium. A hush fell over everyone inside. A cold, creeping silence of disbelief settled in as this had escalated beyond their wildest expectations.

Most were thinking of a fierce battle that accidentally ended up with one being dead.

Not whatever this is happening right now.

One of the deans who had been watching the situation escalate turned his head. His strong gaze moved away from the barrier and fixed on the shield embedded in the wall right behind him—the mana source feeding the red wall.

Since the professors failed, it was clear that forcing their way through would be too difficult.

It would take time—time that they didn’t have.

Right now, the Lesser Angel was in trouble, so they needed to act quickly.

Just moments earlier, everyone, especially those who are a part of the academy’s body, wanted the Lesser Angel dead. But now, their attitude changed entirely. If he died here, whoever was tampering with the tournament would succeed.

And the academy could not allow that to happen.

So, the dean decided to make his move.

Instead of trying to break the red wall, he would aim for the source instead. Cut the power.

He moved toward the shield and reached for it with both hands, determined to yank it out of its place. Firmly, his fingers wrapped around the edge of the shield with the strength to bend enchanted steel.

But someone stopped him.

"Wait."

The Chancellor’s voice cut through the air like a blade, freezing the dean still.

Confused, the other deans followed his gaze.

His gaze was fixed on the arena below, watching. Waiting. As if he saw something no one else could. Below, Kai was staring at the corrupted Chester who had finally turned around. Those solid blue eyes, void of humanity, locked onto Kai with an intensity that stopped breath.

All of the deans were focused on the corrupted Chester, but not the Chancellor.

Instead, his eyes were focused on Kai, noticing the strange air surrounding this Lesser Angel.
