I am the Only Son of Nyx

Chapter 268: A Prayer for Strength

Boom—!

Kai’s dark energy that had been seething from his wounds began to fade and disappear.

It was a bad sign.

His Reckless Ruin Ending Fragment had deemed that his body was already at its limit, and it wouldn’t be long before he collapsed entirely without any strength to move. Nothing he could do right now other than surrender to exhaustion.

Even though his body was losing strength rapidly, his mind was wide awake.

Survival was on the line.

Kai could see death approaching as the corrupted Chester turned to face him and unleashed a suffocating killing intent. And his gaze—it was already inhuman. Something had taken over him, and there was nothing he could do.

More blood leaked down Kai’s lips as the killing intent pressed against his chest.

I’m going to die. I’m going to die!

Kai gritted his teeth.

His eyes shifted to the shield that had been pushed back to his right, and he tried reaching for it.

But his body simply had no strength remaining.

Had it not been for the constant aura that pushed his back against the wall like a gale, he would not even be able to remain standing, much less reach for the shield. Yet it was the only thing that could help him survive longer right now.

Outside, the professors were trying to break in.

As long as he could survive until they broke through, he would avoid death.

Kai was afraid—the terror of death was squeezing his heart.

After all the struggle he had gone through to win the tournament, this happened. It was unfair. Really unfair. Just this once... Just this one time! Please. Can something go really well for me? Can I get a break?!

He had gone through every single obstacle that was thrown at him.

Survived and even triumphed over them all.

At this point, he should be allowed to be relieved. Allowed to rest from any misfortunes.

Nemesis, the Goddess of Retribution, should have seen it all by now. She should’ve seen how his enemies cheated again and again simply because they couldn’t stomach losing. She should have weighed and properly addressed the imbalance.

This was the exact kind of injustice she despised above all else.

Surely, she would not let this stand.

Just then, as the thought of Nemesis played in his mind, his eyes slowly widened.

What am I thinking...?

Almost instantly, as the realization settled in his mind, the fear that he was feeling disappeared from his heart, replaced by something that looked almost like determination. His bruised and battered body teetered on the edge of collapse, his vision was unfocused, and his lungs were burning.

And yet, hope returned to Kai’s face.

Kai slowly brought his trembling hands together with all his strength, clasping them in prayer.

It was a small and quiet gesture amidst the chaos—with the corrupted Chester closing on him like a daemon. But the moment his hands were clasped, the entire world around him lost its effect on him.

Everything became silent, the pain disappeared, and the exhaustion evaporated.

Like everything had simply come to an end. Devoured by the final ending.

...

Inside the House of Night.

It had been quiet for some time.

Noxian sat before his house as he always did, a still figure against the endless dark—waiting for something or someone that never seemed to come. Ever since Kai had stopped returning to the House of Night to meet him, the domain had slipped back to its old rhythm.

Silence and peace, with only the occasional Nightborn who stumbled into his domain.

But all fled with terror in their eyes when they saw Noxian.

For some reason, the silence and peace pressed on him a little bit more than usual.

Perhaps he had gotten used to Kai’s occasional visit that silence and peace had become a little bit foreign to him. Noxian turned his helmet toward the farm and fixed his eyes on the seeds Kai had planted that still hadn’t grown.

The soil remained dark and still.

As if waiting for something that had been promised but never delivered.

Noxian exhaled harder than normal, bordering on a sigh before he looked down again.

Returning to the quiet depths of his thoughts.

And before long, the silence was broken.

Noxian’s senses alerted him to something as he tilted his helmet upward. Something big and powerful was churning in the background. A shift in the fabric of the House of Night itself—a disturbance that rippled through the darkness like a stone dropped into still water.

And then, to his surprise, a trembling voice crept into his ears.

"Goddess of the Primordial Night..."

He knew that voice. He recognized it instantly.

At the realization, Noxian rose to his feet—his full attention fixed on the sky above.

"Mother..."

Again, the voice seeped into his ears as if it was whispered to him directly.

Noxian quickly focused on his connection with the First Son of the Primordial Night, focused on his connection with Kai, and what he found made him frown. "Is that why he hadn’t been going to the House of Night lately?"

He could feel that the boy was in trouble. Dying.

Kai’s life force was draining away like a broken faucet, and he was now using his last resort.

And then, an ear-piercing shriek came.

It was a soul-tearing cry that exploded across the entire House of Night like a storm of broken glass. The dimension shuddered. The shadows convulsed. Noxian staggered; both hands flew to his helmet as the shriek clawed at the inside of his skull.

The pressure was so strong that he almost fell to his knees.

Noxian could feel the vast fury contained within the shriek.

One last time, Kai’s voice seeped into his ears.

"Give me the strength to grant an end to the enemy before me."

Crack—!

As soon as the last echo of Kai’s words faded—the ground beneath Noxian’s feet erupted into violent quakes. The dark, misted soil didn’t crack, but the force was so fierce that Noxian was having a hard time keeping his balance as the world around him began to bend and shift.

"What’s happening?" He thought aloud in utter confusion.

Just then, amidst the chaos, he also noticed the House of Night had grown darker.

That should not have been possible.

It was already a place of darkness and silence, but now, the darkness deepened into something absolute. Noxian instinctively looked up again, and his brows dropped further as he realized how the House of Night had grown darker.

Above, the constellations, the eternal stars that had watched over the House of Night since the beginning, were blinking. One by one, they dimmed. And then, to his horror, they went dark. Merging with the eternal darkness.

Even the constellations tied to the upper floors were not spared.

Everything was swallowed by the blackness like torches snuffed out by an unseen hand.

Not stopping at that, the full moon began to flicker.

It was the sight that finally broke Noxian’s spirit as terrible fear crept into his heart.

He had seen the moon flicker only before; a memory so ancient it felt more like intuition rather than recollection. For the life of him, he couldn’t remember what happened back then, but his senses remembered that something really terrible happened.

One that ingrained a primal fear into him.

And before his very eyes, the full moon dimmed.

It guttered like a dying flame, and then died.

Darkness shrouded the entire House of Night, the like even Noxian couldn’t peer through.

"The Final Night..." Noxian swallowed. "She’s moving."

...

Kai forgone his desperate plea to Goddess Nemesis to help smite down his enemies.

He had forgotten that above everything else, he was the First Son of the Primordial Night.

If he wanted help, then his plea should be directed to the Goddess.

From start to finish, Kai had been trying to survive by the book. He followed the rules and never once steered away from them. But his enemies always vied to cheat all the time, so this time, he was going to cheat, too.

Just that, his cheat was on a scale beyond what his enemies had done.

"Goddess of the Primordial Night..." He rasped in a whisper. "Mother. Give me the strength to grant an end to the enemy before me."

Swoosh—!

Kai’s prayer worked.

Almost instantly after he spoke the plea, power surged through his veins. It was a power that pushed him even beyond before the Dragon Ring tournament started. The pain that had clung to his body for days, the exhaustion that had hollowed him out—both vanished in an instant.

Instinctively, his spine straightened with ease.

And then he stepped forward against the pressure as if it were nothing.

As if he hadn’t been overwhelmed to a helpless state by it seconds ago.

Slowly, the veins around his abyssal black eyes darkened, spreading like cracks through stone.

It looked like corruption, but different.

The black was deeper than any black. A void that didn’t merely envelop but devoured.

Sensing the change in Kai, the corrupted Chester stopped mid-track—and recoiled. His solid blue eyes met Kai’s gaze and saw something that should not exist in their reality. A bottomless abyss. A dark chasm that stared back.

Even in his corrupted state.

Even with the Blue Void taking over, fear still lived in his flesh.

His body remembered terror, and it froze before that endless darkness.

Kai moved aside and bent down.

He picked up Chester’s shield from the ground.

Despite the situation that had turned to chaos, his movements were calm.

Kai turned to the Chancellor.

"High Angel Chester is corrupted—thus his life is now forfeit." He said with a steady voice. "I’m going to kill him."

The words were not a question. They were a declaration.

Before the Chancellor could respond, the last trace of white in Kai’s eyes vanished. His eyeballs became polished obsidian, black as the space between stars. He turned away, shield in hand, and faced the corrupted Chester once more.

Something had taken over.

In the blink of an eye, Kai devoured the distance between him and the corrupted Chester.

He stood before Chester and peered into the solid blue eyes.

Inside, he could feel Chester’s familiar presence, but it was waning rapidly.

And then, a tear slid down his face as if he knew that Kai could see him.

Kai raised the shield, and dark energy surged over it in a heartbeat—coating it in living shadow. It morphed the shield into an aegis of darkness. And then, with a blitzing, violent swing, he drove it into Chester’s skull.

In an instant, Chester’s head ruptured, blooming into a spray of blood and shattered flesh.

Before the body could fall, his hand caught it and devoured it until there was nothing left.
