I am the Only Son of Nyx

Chapter 276: Securing Stability (1)

Kai walked out of the infirmary and headed straight to the main entrance.

From the very moment he came back from the Blood Rite up until this very moment—he was simply trying to establish a footing in the First Sky. He needed stability in the academy so that he could focus on other things.

If he wanted to find out about the Demon Man, he had to use all his focus on doing that.

Any distractions would simply make his attempt futile.

Especially when those distractions were attempts to kill him from those around him.

One at a time.

Now, with both Barbara and Chester gone, nobody could dispute him as the strongest.

More than that, Ragnar was also effectively out of the picture. Chester’s corruption had been far too flashy, too public. There was no doubt the Chancellor would question him. Kai felt the air from the Chancellor back when Chester was corrupt, and it was really tense.

Even if the Chancellor pardoned Ragnar, there was also the Demigod.

Being involved with a person like that would be nothing but trouble.

It would be a surprise if the Demigod sent someone to kill Ragnar to shut his mouth.

Either way, Ragnar was also out of the picture.

All of the main heads that could cause trouble for him were gone, and now it was time to deal with their minions. Kai would commence a cleansing in order to secure the academy and have it become stable.

For him to be truly safe and stable in the academy, he needed to also address them.

He didn’t need to do much, as he was now the Red Prince.

But still, he needed to at least meet with them, and he was planning to do it tonight.

Only then can I put my attention on the Demon Man again and exact my revenge.

Kai stepped out of the main academy building and paused at the edge of the path. He looked up and inhaled the night, filling his lungs with cold air that freshened up his mind. His presence was already fading; the shadows coiled around him like old friends.

Even without the Nigh-phantom, the night still provided cover for him.

Just then, he turned his head and fixed his gaze on the two grey-masked Angels.

Both were guarding the entrance, and their spines straightened when Kai’s gaze got to them.

Unlike the healer, who was oblivious to the investiture that happened a few hours ago, these two were there when it happened, and they had seen that Kai was the one who was crowned this year’s Red Prince.

Kai has never really done this before.

Even earlier, he still asked the grey-masked Angel for direction like a Lesser Angel would.

Meek and overtly polite.

But he had seen how the High Angels talked to the grey-masked Angels—so he decided to be a little more confident. Slowly, with deliberate steps, Kai approached one of them who looked the most stressed.

"Red Prince Kai, what can I help you with?" the grey-masked Angel saluted.

It was already nighttime, but his nervousness made him forget about the volume of his voice.

"I was wondering about something. Something that you might shed some light on."

"Ask away, and I’ll make sure to answer it to the best of my abilities!"

"Good... I was simply wondering whether Guard Angels like you are close with one another."

"Close?" the grey-masked Angel frowned, then straightened—pulling himself out of his daze and made a firm nod. "Yes, Red Prince Kai. We Guard Angels are tasked with maintaining the peace and order within the academy. To be effective, we must stand close to one another. Our personal feelings mean nothing as long as we protect mankind’s future."

Kai stared at the grey-masked Angel, and a thought came to mind.

A thought that he hadn’t really contemplated before.

From Asher’s squad in the Second Sky, he learned that there are assault and aegis squads.

But he didn’t quite understand where the grey-masked Angels fit—as they were also students who had already graduated from the First Sky. And these grey-masked Angels were stronger than the seniors in the Aegis Squad.

And then he remembered the East Keeper in the Blood Rite.

He said that he was a Grade-4 Awakened Supernal. Hm... I see.

Kai realized that the grey-masked Angels were most likely the weaker part of the seniors.

Instead of entering the assault or aegis squad, they were sent back down to the First Sky to keep order within the academies. Clearly, the grey-masked Angels were simply those who couldn’t reach the Aspirant Supernal rank.

As for being a Grade-4 Awakened Supernal, that was an unnatural path of power.

One could only reach Grade-3 before ascending to the next rank.

Kai wasn’t sure, but the academy must’ve developed a path to make use of their limitations.

Many others would be like them, huh? Forced to be guards until their deaths.

Had Kai been stuck with one Primordial Lock, he would probably be like them—limited, so he was grateful for the Goddess to allow him to have multiple Primordial Locks. He shook his head and focused on the moment again.

"In that case," Kai placed a hand on the grey-masked Angel’s shoulder. "I’m sure you’re aware of the grey-masked Angels who dragged me through the street a couple of nights ago. Bring me to them."

"I..." the grey-masked Angel glanced at his partner, and then back at Kai again.

He swallowed harshly, knowing that there was no way out of this.

Meanwhile, across the academy grounds.

Another pair of grey-masked Angels slid open the massive door of a warehouse in a secluded part of the academy. The sound of grinding metal echoed briefly—before being swallowed by the muted stillness of the night.

Inside, the air was cool and dry, tinged with the scent of old wood and cold steel.

Everywhere the eyes moved, there were wooden crates rising in uneven stacks, filling the vast space. Mining gear filled several crates. Another contained basic weapons and arrows. Chairs and tables were inside several other ones.

In the far corner, a sizeable inner building that was connected to the warehouse wall could be seen. Its doorway spilled pale light into the gloom. Several figures moved in and out—with a practiced silence, and their plain clothing made it clear that they were workers and servants.

This was the domain of labour; the laundering, the mending, and the endless upkeep required to keep the academy’s heart beating. And it was also the place for the servants to tend to their masters’ lifestyles.

Grey-masked Angels stood at intervals—their masked faces unreadable as they watched over the workers and servants, ensuring work was done properly and nothing within the wooden crates slipped into hidden pockets.

Near the gate, the two grey-masked Angels who had entered walked deeper.

Their footsteps echoed, drawing the attention of the other grey-masked Angels.

Both of them approached another pair nearest to the labour building.

"Anthony, how was the guarding today?" One of them raised a hand and greeted.

Instead of answering, the grey-masked Angel who was supposed to be Antony cast a glance and then walked away without another word. His partner also followed suit, heading out with his head down as if wanting to avoid talking to these two grey-masked Angels.

It was time for changing shifts.

Normally, they would banter for a few minutes before parting.

But tonight, for some reason, those two were silent.

"What’s his problem?" the grey-masked Angel frowned.

"Bruce, are you stupid?" The other grey-masked Angel’s voice cracked with panic and dread, as if he were already standing at the edge of his own execution. "They’re avoiding us because they don’t want to be associated with us! We’re the ones who dragged the Lesser Angel!"

"Come on..." Bruce waved his hand. "He didn’t see our faces. We’re going to be fine. Even if he did, leave him to me. I can make sure that we can at least fend him off and then find sanctuary with the others."

"What? Did you not see what he did on the tournament?!"

"What? What did he do? I was in charge somewhere else, so I didn’t watch."

"He killed a corrupted High Angel—arguably the strongest freshman High Angel there was! And that wasn’t just any kill. Chester was consumed by the Blue Void, and Kai put him down anyway. That puts his strength at least at the Aspirant Supernal rank. Maybe higher."

"You-You’re kidding..."

Just then, the conversation died in their throats as the wind behind them shifted.

A cold, unnatural whisper slithered down their spines and set every nerve on edge.

Before they could turn, before they could even check what was behind them, something seized them by the shoulders. A hand gripped their shoulders like iron, and it wrenched them back with such brutal force that their feet left the ground entirely.

Everything blurred.

Both of their bodies sailed through the narrow alley between crates and smashed hard against the warehouse wall. The impact drove the air from their lungs in a single, explosive grunt—dust rained down from the stacked crates as they tried to catch their breath.

For a moment, they could only see stars.

But the anger was already rising up their necks, pushing them to their feet.

Murder was evident in their eyes.

Understanding their situations made them sensitive, and anyone who did this to them would get beaten up without a doubt. They rose, eyes bulging, ready to strike back, but then they saw him.

Saw someone who made their hearts skip a beat.

A figure stood at the mouth of the alley and was now placing a heavy cover across the small corridor of wooden crates with deliberate slowness, sealing them in. The last sliver of light from the warehouse lights vanished, leaving only shadow and the faint gleam of his silhouette.

He turned toward them—the crimson mantle shifted like liquid fire across his shoulders.

And the snarling dragon mask shimmered against the dark backdrop.

Just those two items alone made it clear who this person was—Red Prince Kai.

Seeing him turned their blood to ice and drained every scrap of colour from their faces. They had been talking about Kai only seconds ago—and now he stood before them, as if the mere mention of his name had called him from the darkness in the corners of the warehouse.

Kai straightened his posture, and his gaze shifted from Bruce to the other.

He probed the two as if he could see through their masks.

And then, he raised his index finger.

"Hello there." His voice slid through the air like the cold touch of death itself. The two froze, both their bodies locked up—as if turned to stone. "Are you Bruce and John? If you are, then sucks to be you."
