John swallowed harshly and then immediately dropped to his knees and prostrated.
"I was in the wrong, and I deeply regret what I did! Give me one chance, Red Prince Kai! Just forgive me this once—and I’ll make sure to do anything in my power to repay your kindness!" He begged and pressed his forehead against the ground. "I am deeply regretful!"
No other way to survive right now other than beg for forgiveness.
Nothing he said could amend what he did to Kai, so all he could do was do this.
Beside him, Bruce was snapped out of his daze and also slowly went down to his knees.
However, unlike John, his movements were hesitant.
"We’re only following orders," He argued while on his knees. "Where is the wrong in that?"
Kai didn’t answer.
His gaze simply remained steadfast, staring into Bruce’s eyes with an unblinking stare.
One that made Bruce sweat a little bit more.
"I-I apologize for what I did." He lowered his gaze. "But the blame wasn’t entirely on us."
"Of course, the blame wasn’t entirely on you two—it also fell on your masters. But as of right now, your masters who gave the order to frame me are already dead." Kai stated in an icy tone. "And the last one is about to die. Now, I’m simply rooting out their dogs."
"Wh-What?" Bruce stuttered.
Realizing the situation he was in right now, he immediately prostrated himself, following John’s lead.
He was aware that the Lesser Angel won—but he didn’t realize Chester, Barbara, and Ragnar were all gone. Initially, he thought he could simply hide behind the fact that he was following orders and seek asylum from Ragnar.
But that’s not possible anymore.
"Forgive me for my impudence! I was wrong, and I deeply regret it!"
"Really?"
Kai let out a cynical chuckle, finding it amusing how fast Bruce changed his demeanour.
One moment he was haughty, and the next, he was submissive like this.
"I think the two of you are mistaken about something." Kai pinched his forehead—and shook his head. "It was already too late for apologies. You don’t get to stab someone and then resort to apology later. That’s not how the world works."
Hearing his words was akin to having a bucket of cold water dumped onto their bodies.
John and Bruce felt their bodies tremble as they lifted up their heads.
Even with their masks on, the fear on their faces couldn’t be hidden.
"Even if I wanted to forgive the two of you, I couldn’t." Kai’s hand slipped inside his mantle as he spoke with terrifying calmness. "Because if you remember, you beat up Abigail to near-death, and nearly killed Talitha. Forget Abigail, she’s a Supernal and could defend herself. But Talitha? She’s a normal human, and yet you attacked her."
Kai took out a knife and stared at the fearful grey-masked Angels.
He was planning to kill both of them—but seeing the fear on their faces made him change his mind. Killing them would clear this problem, that anyone could attack me and incur no consequences, but I think I can do more.
A thought came to mind, and he decided to go through with it.
"Attacking me is one thing—but bullying the weak is another. I can forgive you for attacking me; as you said, you were only following orders. But attacking her crossed the line. In addition, she’s my servant," Kai played with the knife—twirling his wrist and letting its sharpness cut the air. "Which meant she’s mine, under my protection. Thus, only one of you will die tonight."
He tossed the knife—it clanked and slid until it was within arm’s reach of the two.
Something that caught John and Bruce completely off guard.
"I want the one who stabbed Talitha to die—while the other I allowed to live. One of you did it, so don’t try to fool me otherwise." Kai turned around and grabbed the cover—intending to leave, then paused to glance over his shoulder one more time. His dark eyes burned with clear murderous intent. "And if the one who survives is the one who stabbed her, I will know."
Once he said that, Kai exited the small alley and closed the cover behind him again.
Not long after, the sound of fighting could already be heard.
But Kai didn’t care.
Bruce was the one who stabbed Talitha, as he had a big mouth and told everyone what he did.
Many of the grey-masked Angels knew about it, so finding this information was easy.
He had planned to kill them both and be done with it. But the raw fear in John’s eyes changed the plan. Bruce would die, while John would live. Not because he was merciful, but because a living example was more valuable than a second corpse.
Everyone needed to see what happened to those who crossed the new Red Prince.
To mitigate new problems rising in the future.
Earlier, when Bruce and John entered the warehouse, he saw what happened.
Saw how the other grey-masked Angels were avoiding them.
So, Kai could use John as a cautionary tale, as he would be isolated after he killed Bruce.
Kai inhaled deeply and turned to scan the area. His eyes found several other grey-masked Angels who were standing straight, watching over the warehouse. He wanted to leave without them knowing, but caged that thought.
Instead, he headed towards the entrance without bothering to hide.
Even as the battle between Bruce and John became more heated, he kept walking.
None of the grey-masked Angels said a word. He shouldn’t have been there, and the commotion still hanging in the air was his doing. But no one acknowledged it. No one even dared to gaze at him as he walked past.
Kai opened the massive sliding doors and then paused.
He pivoted his body and looked at the other grey-masked Angels around.
"Did you see Red Prince Kai coming to visit the warehouse tonight?"
"No, Sir!"
All of them answered decisively and in unison.
A faint smile crept to Kai’s face as he nodded and then walked out of the warehouse.
Just as Dean Lincoln had said earlier—the Red Prince could do whatever he wanted. As long as his actions didn’t clash with the Deans or the Chancellor, nothing would stand in his way. Nobody could stop him.
Once he dealt with those two, Kai walked down the street again.
His steps were purposeful, and the speed of his walk showed that he had a destination in mind that he needed to reach quickly. Tonight, he still had one more target, and he believed he was already ripe for the taking right now.
...
Inside a modest room, Dorian was dead to the world.
He lay sprawled across his bed, one leg dangling off the edge, while the sheets twisted around his waist like a cocoon. The day had been long—hectic, eventful, and utterly triumphant. Kai had won the Dragon Ring Tournament and become the Red Prince.
And as a member of the Ambrosia Pact, Dorian had risen right alongside Kai.
Now, he was untouchable.
Just the thought alone was enough to keep a smile plastered across his face, even in sleep.
No—especially in sleep.
Inside his dream, the academy was a paradise. Female students flocked to him; their laughter was akin to wind chimes, and their eyes were bright with admiration. He had one on each arm, both of them pressing close against his chest, whispering things that made his dream-self grin like an idiot.
Across the dreamscape, he spotted Kai and Bryan, and he shot them a smug smirk.
"See?" He murmured in his sleep—his voice muffled against the pillow. Then, his small waist moved left and right as if flaunting his junior—that was big in his dream. "How am I gay and have a girl on each arm?"
Both Kai and Bryan clapped their hands.
Giving him a thumbs-up and admitted that they were wrong.
And the grin on Dorian’s face only stretched wider as he finally beat the gay allegations.
The dream was completely perfect. The girls. The attention. The look on Kai and Bryan’s faces. He was on top of the world. But as he was about to deliver a devastating one-liner, the sound of knocking shattered the fantasy.
Three sharp knocks against the door.
Dorian snapped awake and groaned—rubbing his face in utter frustration as his sweet dream dissolved like mist in the morning sun. He buried his face into the pillow again, hoping that the knocking would stop so that he could return to that sweet dream.
But it didn’t.
Instead, it only became louder.
"Fuck!" He screamed into the pillow.
And with a long, suffering sigh, he dragged himself out of bed. His red hair was a dishevelled mess, and his eyes still hung heavy with sleep. He shuffled to the door, yanked it open like the police, and found himself face-to-face with Kai and Bryan.
Both of them stood in the corridor, side by side, staring at him with matching amusement.
Dorian blinked, and then frowned hard.
"I was having a really good dream." He said with clear irritation. "You two better have a very good reason for interrupting it."
"I have a gift for you," Kai said without beating around the bush. "And I’m damn sure that it would be far better than sleeping. Once you see my gift—you’d probably cry and tell me how much you love me."
"First of all, I very much fucking doubt that whatever this gift is better than sleeping." Dorian lifted a finger and snorted. And then, he lifted another finger. "And second, I’m a man. I don’t cry like pussies."
"Oh... But this time," Kai grinned behind his mask. "I’m sure you would."
Dorian’s eyes narrowed.
Then, he turned to Bryan. "If this gift is for me, then what is he doing here?"
"Don’t be mad at me." Bryan raised his arms. "I was simply following Kai."
"Just thought that you might need a hand." Kai shrugged and walked away. "Come on."
Moments later.
"Red Prince Kai," A senior in front of a steel door reached out his hand.
Kai accepted the handshake and turned his gaze towards the steel door. "Any problem?"
"No, not at all. You can leave it to me."
"Good, good. I owe you one."
"Don’t worry about that. Come on, I’ll lead you straight to him."
The senior opened the steel door, and Kai followed behind closely.
Dorian and Bryan exchanged a look, but eventually followed anyway.
It was dark along the way, but once they reached the bottom of the staircase and were led to a dim chamber, a surprising sight came into view. Dorian, for once, stepped forward and stared at what was before his eyes.
"No way... No, you did fucking not!"
"Don’t cry now."
