Chapter 145: Chapter 145: The War Front
A few minutes later, Omar was bleeding from stab wounds across his arms, legs, shoulders, and torso. Eight wounds in total. None fatal — Lucian had been precise — but each one burned with residual light energy that prevented the vampire’s regeneration from closing them fully.
Omar had stopped screaming. Now he just cursed — a stream of profanity in multiple languages, his voice hoarse, his eyes burning with hatred.
"You fucking bastard — I’ll kill you — I’ll tear you apart — I’ll drain every drop of your blood and feed it to dogs when I get out—"
Lucian watched him calmly from a few meters away. He hadn’t asked a single question. The stabbing wasn’t interrogation. It was preparation.
Omar’s mental defenses were tied to his physical state. Pain, blood loss, fear — each wound weakened the walls around his consciousness. Lucian had been chipping away at those walls methodically, waiting for the right moment.
His eyes started glowing purple.
Mind Read.
Normally, the spell wouldn’t work. Omar’s mental fortitude was too high — Lucian’s Charm stat of 40 fell short of the required threshold. But weakened as he was, bleeding from eight wounds, his consciousness fractured by pain and terror, the walls were thin enough to crack.
Lucian’s consciousness pushed through.
Memories flooded in — fragmented, chaotic, overlapping. A dining table. Three families seated around it. The Du Mauriers. The Khamsins. A third group Lucian didn’t recognize — the Apeps. And a scarred man at the head of the table who wasn’t part of any family. Hassan.
They were discussing him. His bloodline. The phrase "prophecy child" repeated multiple times. A plan to find him, capture him, bring him before something called the Dark King. Zara’s description of the fight in Egypt — every detail relayed to the room. His profile, compiled and distributed.
Omar’s willpower surged.
GET OUT—
The connection shattered. Omar’s eyes were terrified — not just of the pain anymore, but of Lucian. Of what Lucian was. Of what Lucian could do.
Lucian stared at him for a long moment.
Then he stepped forward, plunged his hand into Omar’s chest, and crushed his heart.
Schluk-crunch.
Omar’s eyes went wide. A wet sound escaped his throat.
Lucian pulled his hand free, wiped the blood on Omar’s clothes, and closed his eyes.
The memories he’d captured were already organizing themselves in his mind. The meeting between the Apeps, the Khamsins, and the Du Mauriers. Hassan at the head of the table, coordinating. Whoever this Dark King was, for all these powerful vampire families to come together, he was insanely powerful.
They weren’t just aware of Lucian’s bloodline. They were actively hunting him down. They had his full profile — compiled from Zara’s report after the fight in Egypt. Silver hair, crimson eyes, light manipulation, blood manipulation, the dark light sword technique. Everything.
Since they knew Khalil and Omar had come for him, it would take a while before they assumed the two were dead. Then they would send someone even stronger. And he also had to worry about the Apeps and the Du Mauriers.
All he could do now was get stronger. Fast.
Right now, his combat strength could compete with Peak Core Realm cultivators. Defeating a Peak Core Realm human would be much easier than defeating a Peak Core Realm true born vampire like Khalil — the difference in regeneration, stamina, and physical stats was significant. But he would eventually scale through.
His main worry was if they sent a Grand Core Realm master. The gap between Peak Core Realm and Early Grand Core Realm was huge. A qualitative leap in power, not just a quantitative one. A single Early Grand Core Realm cultivator could potentially kill him before he even understood what was happening.
But that was a problem for later. Right now, he had an urgent mission.
"Solar Flare."
FWOOSH.
Omar’s corpse burned to ash. Lucian turned and left the warehouse.
He called Bruno’s communication device. Bruno sent the location. Lucian ran through the empty, rain-slicked streets and met up with Wei Chen and Bruno at an intersection three blocks from the northern wall.
They moved together toward the war front.
The noise hit them before they saw it — a wall of sound composed of beast roars, human screams, mana explosions, and the constant crack-crack-crack of the Zephyr Eagle’s lightning. The green rain was still falling, but here, near the wall, the heat from sustained combat had created pockets where the rain evaporated before reaching the ground.
They arrived at the northern border.
The scale was staggering.
The city wall — thirty meters high, reinforced with mana-tech and ability-based fortifications — stretched in both directions as far as they could see. On top of the wall and beside it, Hunters, Task Force officers, and military members of the Border Integrity Force fought in organized formations, firing mana bolts, activating barriers, and coordinating counterattacks against the beasts pouring out of the Black Forest.
The Border Integrity Force — managing the boundaries between human-controlled territories and beast and dungeon zones. They maintained the fortified walls around major cities, operated the checkpoint systems, and had authority to deny entry or exit to anyone deemed a threat. They worked closely with national militaries but reported directly to the World Government. Their soldiers wore dark grey combat suits with the World Government insignia — a globe enclosed in a shield — and carried standardized mana-powered weaponry.
Above the wall, four figures fought the Zephyr Eagle in a coordinated formation.
Guild Master Helena Vance of the Silver Dawn Guild — Mid Grand Core Realm, A-Rank Ice Domain. Guild Master Rothgar Ironside of the Iron Fortress Guild — Mid Grand Core Realm, A-Rank Earth Fortress. Guild Master Kael Morrow of the Crimson Blade Guild — Mid Grand Core Realm, A-Rank Blood Blade. And Guild Master Darius Cole of the Storm Vanguard Guild — Late Grand Core Realm, A-Rank Tempest Strike.
The four of them moved in a diamond formation around the Zephyr Eagle, each one attacking from a different angle, forcing the beast to constantly redirect its attention. Helena froze sections of its wings. Rothgar raised earth barriers to block its lightning. Kael slashed at its feathers with blood-infused blade constructs. Darius — the strongest of the four — struck with concentrated wind attacks that actually made the eagle flinch.
But the Zephyr Eagle was Peak B-Rank. Equivalent to a Peak Grand Core Realm master. The four guild masters were holding it in check, but they weren’t winning. Every exchange cost them mana. The eagle wasn’t tiring.
On the ground, beside the wall, and outside it, other Grand Core Realm masters fought the weaker B-Rank beasts. Lucian’s Primordial Sight picked out the signatures — a massive wolf, Mid B-Rank, being held at bay by three Mid Grand Core cultivators working together. Armored boars, C-Rank, being handled by smaller teams. And beyond them, thousands of soldiers and officers fighting C and D-Rank beasts in chaotic, brutal combat.
Thousands of humans. Tens of thousands of beasts. People were dying left and right — Lucian could see bodies on the ground even from this distance, some human, some beast, some too mangled to identify.
They were spectators at a war they couldn’t influence.
"Lucian!"
He turned.
Clara was pushing through the crowd of soldiers, Liang Feng and Ryu Yichen behind her. Clara’s silver hair was damp from the rain, her slit-pupil eyes scanning the battlefield with sharp focus as she too could not be affected by the rain due to her DNA as a vampire. Liang Feng looked tense but composed. Ryu’s dragon-slit eyes tracked the Zephyr Eagle above with grim recognition.
They reached the three of them.
"We found them," Clara said, slightly out of breath. "The Task Force stations on the eastern side have been informed. Most of them already figured out the rain was dangerous on their own."
"The Guild Masters are occupied," Liang Feng added, nodding toward the sky. "We couldn’t get close to any of them. The shockwaves from their clashes won’t even let you near the area."
Wei Chen sheathed his sword. "So what now?"
Nobody answered immediately. Above them, the Zephyr Eagle screamed and another volley of lightning rained down on the wall.
