Chapter 152: Chapter 152: The Water Mage

The group observed the target from behind tree cover.

In the center: the creature.

It was a plant. A massive, rooted organism with a central bulbous body easily four meters tall and six meters wide, covered in pulsing green veins that throbbed with slow, biological rhythm. Tentacle-like roots extended from its base in every direction, burying themselves deep into the soil, drawing nutrients and water from the surrounding earth. Atop the bulb, a crown of translucent leaves fanned outward — each one the size of a door, leaking green liquid from their edges. The raw plague compound. It dripped steadily into the soil, where root networks absorbed and transported it outward through the forest floor.

Standing beside the creature: a man in dark clothing. His hands were pressed flat against the plant’s roots, eyes closed, channeling something. His mana signature was Peak Core Realm, and the green energy flowed through him — he was controlling the plant’s plague production, directing its output like a conductor directing an orchestra.

Hovering above the clearing on a platform of condensed water: a woman with blue hair that hung past her shoulders, weightless in the air. Her hands were raised toward the sky, palms open, and above her the clouds churned with sickly green rain that stretched toward the distant city. Early Grand Core Realm. The water mage.

The water mage’s head turned. Her eyes — pale blue, almost translucent — swept across the tree line and landed directly on the group’s position.

"Visitors," she said, her voice carrying clearly despite the distance. "How interesting."

She lowered one hand slightly. The rain continued above her with the other. "You have ten seconds to turn around and walk away. I’ll pretend I didn’t see you."

Nobody moved.

Wei Chen leaned against a tree, arms crossed. "Or what? You’ll make it rain on us? We’re already wet."

The woman’s expression didn’t change. "Pity."

She raised her free hand — a simple gesture and a wave of pressurized water erupted from the clearing. It moved like a living wall, fifty meters wide and ten meters tall, churning with force that distorted the air ahead of it.

"Nadia — now!" Clara shouted.

Nadia’s eyes flashed. "Ancient Amplification — Full Spread!"

The enhancement slammed into everyone it could reach — Lucian, Clara, Rose, Wei Chen, Bruno, Mickey, Sarah, and both officers. Strength, speed, mana efficiency — all amplified by 1.3 times in a single pulse.

Rose planted her feet and raised both hands. "Aegis Dome!"

The barrier materialized in front of the group — a green-tinted shield of pure force energy, layered three times for reinforcement.

The water wave hit.

BOOOOOOM.

The dome cracked on impact. Hairline fractures spiderwebbed across its surface. But it held — for two seconds. Long enough for-

"Scatter!" Lucian shouted.

The dome shattered. The group split in every direction. The water wave passed through the space they’d occupied and crashed into the trees behind them, snapping trunks like matchsticks.

The water mage didn’t pursue immediately. She raised her hand again, and three water blades formed in the air around her, hovering like waiting predators.

Lucian moved first.

He’d positioned himself on the right flank during the scatter, Aethon drawn, Light Weaving active. He fired three Light Blades at the water mage’s blind side — the left, where she was already turning to track Clara.

Shink-shink-shink.

The water mage didn’t even look. A thin sheet of water materialized beside her and absorbed all three blades without a ripple. She glanced at Lucian with disappointment.

Wei Chen attacked from above — leaping from a tree branch, Sword Spirit blazing, Celestial Severance, Third Form already charging.

"Heaven’s Divide!"

The triple-stacked sword intent crashed down toward the water mage’s head. She raised one finger. A single droplet of water — no larger than a marble — intercepted the entire technique.

BOOM.

The explosion of conflicting forces created a shockwave that flattened trees in a twenty-meter radius. Wei Chen was launched backward, feet skidding across the ground, sword arm numb from the vibration.

Bruno came from the left — Martial King Body active, metallic luster gleaming — driving a Tremor King’s Impact toward the water mage’s ribs. She sidestepped with liquid grace, and a water tentacle whipped from behind her, catching Bruno across the chest.

Crack.

He was launched thirty meters, crashing through two trees before a third stopped his momentum. His metallic skin had absorbed most of the impact, but he was still coughing blood.

Clara attacked from range. "Gravity Lens!"

A point of extreme gravitational force materialized above the water mage — compressing space itself, pulling everything downward with the weight of a mountain. The water mage’s platform wobbled. Her expression shifted for the first time — mild annoyance.

She dissolved the platform into water and reformed it ten meters to the left, outside the gravity lens’s radius. The condensed water that had been her platform didn’t fall — it scattered into dozens of water needles that rocketed toward Clara.

Sarah intercepted. "Seismic Impact!"

The ground between Clara and the needles erupted upward — a wall of stone and earth that absorbed the projectile rain. Crack-crack-crack. The needles punched through but lost enough velocity to be survivable.

Mickey moved with copied gravity power — matching Clara’s technique, creating a second gravity lens that compressed the space around the water mage from the opposite side. Two lenses. Two gravitational forces. The water mage was caught between them, the pressure pulling her from both directions—

She exploded outward as she converted her entire body into water for a split second, letting the gravitational forces pass through empty space, then reformed twenty meters away, unharmed.

Lucian watched all of this from the right flank, Light Weaving active, Aethon ready, analyzing.

The gap in power was enormous.

The water mage wasn’t using her full power. Every attack she deflected was minimal — just enough to counter, never an ounce more. She split her attention constantly — one eye on the fight, one eye on the plant creature behind her. She was protecting it.

If the plant is destroyed or pulled out of her protection range, Lucian thought, she’ll be forced to commit fully to one objective. She can’t do both.

"Everyone on her!" Lucian shouted. "Don’t let her breathe!"

The group pressed.
