Before long, the music faded, and the dance came to an end.

“Sorry, did I step on you too much?” Liu Yue looked apologetic.

During the short five-minute dance, she kept missing her steps from nervousness and had stepped on Wang Haoran’s foot several times.

“It doesn’t hurt, but if we danced any longer, I can’t promise it wouldn’t,” Wang Haoran teased with a grin. Then he added, “Let’s go get some air.”

The gym was packed, and with the five bunny girls still inside, this wasn’t the place to reveal anything. If he wanted to have a real conversation with Liu Yue, he needed somewhere quiet. More importantly, the plan required a different setting to play out.

If he blurted everything out now, it would only backfire.

“Outside? For what?” Liu Yue blinked in surprise.

“Didn’t you want to see my face?”

“Of course I do.” She nodded quickly. “Alright, let’s go outside.”

Soon, under Wang Haoran’s subtle guidance, they arrived at a dimly lit maple-lined road on the edge of campus.

No one else was around. Only the two of them.

It was quiet. Almost too quiet.

Liu Yue scanned their surroundings and began to look uneasy.

“I heard someone mention earlier that there’s a criminal lurking near the university who targets women walking alone at night. It’s really quiet here… maybe we should go somewhere else.”

“You’re not alone, I’m here with you,” Wang Haoran said with a reassuring smile.

“Still, just in case… You never know,” she replied.

“If anything happens, I’d rather die than let anything touch you.” Wang Haoran looked directly into her eyes, his voice low and steady.

【Ding. You’ve stirred Liu Yue’s heart. Gained 800 villain points.】

“Don’t say stuff like that.” Her heart skipped, but she frowned. She didn’t like the sound of it—it felt like a bad omen.

“Aren’t you highly educated? When did you start believing in superstition?” Wang Haoran chuckled and gently pulled her hand, continuing forward. “Trust me, we’ll be fine.”

Liu Yue still looked uneasy, but the desire to see her “husband’s” face outweighed the fear. She followed him deeper along the maple path.

They walked a little further.

“Can I see you now?” Liu Yue suddenly stopped and looked at him, unable to hide her anticipation. As she spoke, she lifted her hand, ready to remove his mask.

Wang Haoran reacted quickly and caught her hand before she could touch it.

“What’s wrong?” Liu Yue asked, confused.

They were already in a quiet spot with no one around. Why was he still hiding?

Earlier, Wang Haoran used his X-ray vision to confirm something. The actor still wasn’t in position.

There was no way he could let her lift the mask yet.

“What if I don''t look like the man you imagined?” he said softly. “Would you be disappointed?”

Liu Yue paused for a moment, sensing something beneath his words.

Wang Haoran once described her “husband” as extremely handsome. But now, it seemed like Wang Haoran might have exaggerated. Maybe “husband” wasn’t that good-looking after all.

“It doesn’t matter,” she said sincerely. “Even if you’re not handsome, even if you’re plain, even if you’re ugly… I still like you.”

“You really mean that?”

“Of course I do.”

He was charming in so many other ways that his looks didn’t even matter anymore. Nobody could be perfect in every aspect.

Wang Haoran released her hand.

Liu Yue reached up again, fingers pale under the soft glow of the streetlamp. She was just about to remove his mask when a shadow suddenly leapt out from the side of the road.

A man in black, face concealed, brandished a small knife.

Under the dim light, the blade reflected a cold glint that made the air feel instantly sharper.

Liu Yue gasped, frozen in place. Her hand hovered, no longer reaching for the mask.

“Qingling University really is a good place,” the masked man sneered. “What luck, running into such a beautiful woman tonight.”

He then glanced at Wang Haoran and added coldly, “This doesn’t concern you. Walk away, unless you want to die.”

Wang Haoran’s expression turned serious. He shielded Liu Yue and whispered to her, “Go. I’ll hold him off.”

Her face drained of color. She realized this was probably the criminal from the rumors.

A wave of regret swept through her. She should have insisted on another path. They wouldn’t be in this situation if they had avoided this road.

But there was no time for second thoughts.

She slipped off her heels and turned to run.

She didn’t want to leave him, but she understood—staying would only be a burden. She would make him hesitate and slow him down. He needed her gone so he could move freely. She had to go and get help.

And she believed in him. He worked out regularly. He was definitely in good shape.

The masked man lunged forward.

Wang Haoran moved at the same time, meeting the attack head-on.

The two clashed in a struggle, exchanging a few quick moves.

He could have easily overpowered the attacker. But instead, Wang Haoran deliberately slowed down. A dramatic rescue might earn some points, but in his mind, the “wounded hero” angle would have even more impact.

Within two seconds, he clutched his stomach and collapsed to the ground as his strength drained away.

Liu Yue did not get far.

The masked man—actually Jiang Gaoxuan in disguise—saw that his task was done. He turned and stumbled off into the darkness, quickly disappearing without a trace.

Liu Yue froze, then rushed back in a panic and dropped to her knees beside Wang Haoran.

His hand pressed tightly against his stomach. Between his fingers, a small knife glinted. His clothes were already stained with blood.

The sight crushed her, and her whole world tilted off balance.

She trembled as she fumbled for her phone, ready to call emergency services.

But before she could dial, Wang Haoran caught her wrist.

“I… I probably won’t make it… but there’s something… something I need to tell you.”

“You’ll be fine. You’re not going to die,” she said frantically, trying to pull her hand free.

But he held on tight. “Just listen. Please. I might not get another chance.”

“…What did you lie about?” she finally asked, choking on the words.

“Take off my mask… and you’ll understand.”

Liu Yue’s hand shook as she reached up and removed the mask.

The moment the mask came off, a familiar face appeared beneath it.

The face of someone she knew well.

Liu Yue froze in place, completely stunned.
