The moment she saw that handsome face, Liu Yue finally understood what her “husband” meant earlier.
The man she had been yearning for, the one who lived in her heart day and night, wasn’t across the ocean at all. He had been right by her side this entire time.
A wave of anger surged in her chest, the kind that came from feeling deceived. But before it could take root, a deeper emotion overtook it—worry.
“I know I wronged you,” Wang Haoran said, his voice low and shaky like a man confessing his final regrets. “But I couldn’t help myself… and now, I’m paying the price. Will you forgive me?”
“I don’t blame you. I really don’t.”
Liu Yue looked at him lying there, weak and gasping for breath. How could she stay mad at him now? Not after what he’d just done—shielding her with his body, risking everything for her. Even if he had made mistakes, they were washed away in that moment.
“You mean it?” Some color returned to Wang Haoran’s pale face, a faint flush of hope pushing back the lifeless tone. “You really don’t blame me?”
“I mean it. I don’t,” Liu Yue said anxiously. “But don’t talk anymore. I’m calling for help right now. You’re going to be fine, you hear me?”
She tried to pull her hand free so she could make the emergency call, but he held on, eyes flickering with something deeper.
Liu Yue froze. She didn’t quite understand what he meant.
Wang Haoran released her hand and gently cupped her face, guiding her closer.
She understood then. Her eyes drifted shut, and she let herself lean in.
It was clumsy at first, unfamiliar. But as he led, the rhythm came, and soon she was swept into the moment, her heart melting as the emotions poured out.
Yet in the middle of it, something didn’t feel right.
He was barely able to speak a moment ago, sounding like he was on the brink of death. But now, he had the energy to do this?
Liu Yue pulled back and sat up, narrowing her eyes as she looked him over.
The small knife that had supposedly pierced his abdomen fell to the ground without support. There was blood, but only a little, and his clothes were barely torn. Through the hole in the fabric, she could see the gleam of metal—a belt buckle.
The knife did not pierce him, but hit the buckle. The blood likely belonged to that masked attacker.
He wasn’t injured at all.
“I thought I got stabbed too,” Wang Haoran explained quickly, playing the part of a man who’d just escaped death. “But then I realized the knife hit the buckle. I guess I’m luckier than I thought.”
Liu Yue let out a breath and nodded, finally understanding. A few centimeters off, and things would’ve ended very differently.
“I’m just glad you’re okay,” she said with lingering relief. “But stop saying things like you’re going to die.”
【Ding. Host has successfully manipulated Female Lead Liu Yue. Favorability remains at 70 (Unswerving Devotion).】
As the system prompt appeared in his mind, Wang Haoran couldn’t help but grin inwardly.
Previously, Liu Yue’s favorability toward him was only 40. The 70 points belonged to the mysterious “Stock God” identity he crafted online. But now, thanks to this performance and revealing the truth, her affection had shifted to his real self.
“Wait a minute,” Liu Yue frowned after the relief faded. “You weren’t actually hurt and didn’t tell me? Do you know how scared I was?”
She started punching him—not hard, but enough to vent her frustration.
“Ow, ow!” he yelped, scrunching his face.
“I barely touched you!” Liu Yue quickly softened. “Are you really hurt?”
“Well… the knife didn’t get me, but that masked guy still hit me pretty hard. My chest still hurts a bit,” he said, milking the moment for sympathy.
“Let’s go to the hospital then.”
“No need,” Wang Haoran shook his head. “I’ll just have Third Sister check it out later.”
“That works too,” Liu Yue nodded.
He stood up, brushing the dust off his suit jacket and tossing it aside. Pointing toward the road lined with red maples, he said, “I think… let’skeep walking.”
“Walking? After everything that just happened? What if that masked man comes back?”
“He won’t. Didn’t you see the blood on my clothes? It’s his. He’s hurt and definitely ran off. No way he’s coming back.”
To be safe, he even pretended to make a report to the police, putting on a good show.
Seeing him so calm, Liu Yue finally relaxed.
They continued walking side by side down the crimson-lit maple road, their steps slow and steady.
—
It was past ten when Liu Yue returned to the villa.
“Fifth Sister, what took you so long tonight?” Qiu Qianwei was lounging on the sofa in the living room, flipping through a recipe book, when she looked up and spotted her.
“There was a costume ball party on campus. I went for a bit,” Liu Yue replied, keeping her voice calm even as her heart fluttered with nerves.
“You never join things like that,” Qiu Qianwei said, squinting at her suspiciously. Then her tone shifted, playful and sharp. “You two finally met in real life, didn’t you?”
Lately, Liu Yue had been acting differently—changing her hairstyle, doing yoga regularly. When the sisters asked, she vaguely mentioned her long-distance boyfriend was flying back from overseas.
Now, seeing her like this, Qiu Qianwei naturally made the connection.
“You’re too sharp, Seventh Sister. Nothing gets past you,” Liu Yue said with a sheepish smile.
“So how’d it go?”
“It was… alright,” she said, though her smile carried a strange twist.
“Well, congratulations are in order then,” Qiu Qianwei grinned. “Did you take a picture? Let me see what he looks like.”
Liu Yue’s heart skipped.
She had taken a photo earlier while they walked, a selfie of the two of them together. But there was no way she could let Qianwei see it.
“I didn’t,” she said quickly, shaking her head.
“Then make sure to take one next time,” Qiu Qianwei said, clearly curious.
“Okay.” Liu Yue gave a vague answer, brushing it off.
Just then, Tantai Yaoyue walked through the hall and caught the tail end of their conversation.
“Fifth Sister, bring your boyfriend out tomorrow,” Yaoyue said, sounding like a strict elder sister. “I want to meet him in person.”
“He’s flying back abroad early tomorrow morning,” Liu Yue lied without blinking.
“Then next time he returns, bring him to meet me.”
“Of course,” Liu Yue nodded firmly, putting on her best promise-face.
“But even if you’ve met now, it’s still a long-distance relationship,” Qiu Qianwei said with a touch of pity. “Being apart all the time is tough.”
She could barely stand a single day away from her own boyfriend. How painful must it be for Liu Yue?
“It’s not so bad,” Liu Yue replied softly. “He’s busy with work, but once I’m on break, I can fly over to visit him. We’ll make it work.”
In truth, she wasn’t worried about seeing him. Her major was in finance, and even when classes were in session, it wasn’t hard to arrange a meeting. If she really wanted to see him, she could just pull a few strings and call him to her office.
The only thing that troubled her now was how to keep things peaceful with her Seventh Sister moving forward.
