Inside a villa nestled within the city.
Having just finished tidying up the house, Feng Anna found herself with nothing to do. Out of habit, she picked up her phone and began idly scrolling through her feed. A post caught her eye—it was from someone marked under the note “Zhihui.”
Her face lit up. Without hesitation, she tapped the screen and initiated a video call.
A few seconds later, the call connected. On the screen appeared the face of a strikingly beautiful woman, the background behind her suggesting she was seated inside a car.
“Master, long time no see,” Feng Anna teased with a playful glint in her eyes.
“Anna, stop it. I’m not old enough to be your master. Just call me Zhihui,” the woman on the other end rolled her eyes with a smile.
“But my cooking skills? I learned them from you. Calling you Master isn’t wrong,” Feng Anna laughed.
“Then I hereby expel you from my sect,” Song Zhihui said with mock solemnity.
Seeing her friend’s expression, Feng Anna reined in her playfulness. “When did you get back to the country?”
“A birthday banquet for some rich guy? Isn’t that beneath your standards?” Feng Anna blinked in surprise.
“I know, right? I wasn’t planning on accepting it. But the amount he offered was just too tempting. I couldn’t resist,” Zhihui replied, her tone half-joking, half-sincere, like a little money-grubber caught red-handed.
Feng Anna gave her a wry smile. “So, where are you staying now? Still in Hong Kong?”
“Nope. I’m in the same city as you.”
“You’re in Qingling too?”
“Yep.”
“That’s perfect. Do you have time tomorrow? Let’s meet up. It’s been ages since we last saw each other,” Song Zhihui’s tone picked up with excitement.
The two first met abroad.
Back when Feng Anna was studying culinary arts overseas, she became Song Zhihui’s apprentice. They hit it off immediately—part teacher and student, part friends—and over time, their relationship deepened into true sisterhood.
But after Feng Anna returned to China, the distance between them grew, and chances to meet dwindled. Now that they were in the same city again, not seeing each other would be a waste of fate’s arrangement.
“It really has been a long time. I miss you too,” Feng Anna said, her voice softening. “It’s just… I’m working now. If I want to go out, I’ll need to ask for time off.”
“You’re kidding me, right? The little princess of the Feng family is working for someone?” Zhihui’s jaw dropped in disbelief. “What kind of job?”
“I’m a maid,” Feng Anna muttered, her voice low and filled with shame.
“Come on, stop joking.”
“I’m not joking,” Feng Anna said, looking serious.
Seeing the sincere look on her friend’s face, Song Zhihui frowned and asked, “What happened?”
“I… I owed someone a lot of money. So much that I’ll never be able to pay it off. He made me work as a nanny to pay it back,” Feng Anna lied, unable to bring herself to explain the real situation.
“What kind of person would do that?”
“He’s a Rich Second Gen. His name is Wang Haoran,” Feng Anna replied vaguely.
“Wang Haoran? Ugh. Every guy named Wang Haoran is scum,” Song Zhihui snorted.
“Wow, sounds like you’ve got some personal experience with that name,” Feng Anna said with a puzzled look.
Zhihui’s voice turned bitter. “Back when I was abroad, I ran into this fat, pig-faced tycoon named Wang Haoran. Guy looked like he was nine months pregnant. He actually had the nerve to try and keep me as his mistress. He wouldn’t take no for an answer. It took everything I had to shake him off.”
After venting, she raised a curious eyebrow and asked, “So this Wang Haoran you’re working for… I bet he’s ugly, right?”
“Well… not really,” Feng Anna hesitated, reluctant to lie just to join in on the roast. “I mean, I won’t say he’s handsome, but he’s not ugly either.”
“Huh? Wait a minute—does his dad happen to be Wang Xiang? As in, the Wang Group?”
“Yeah, how’d you know?”
“Oh my god. I’m working for that very same Wang Xiang! He hired me to cater his wife’s birthday banquet. If I’d known that, I wouldn’t have taken the job, no matter how much money he offered,” Zhihui groaned, clearly regretting her decision. After a pause, she suddenly got a wicked idea. “Hey Anna, should I spike the dishes or something? Ruin the whole banquet?”
“Don’t mess around. That would ruin your reputation. You’d be throwing away money,” Feng Anna quickly stopped her.
Besides, Wang Haoran saved her life. There was no way she would repay kindness with sabotage. In fact, she was genuinely grateful to him. Otherwise, she wouldn’t be working so seriously as a live-in maid and cooking for him every day.
There was no way she’d let her bestie ruin his mother’s birthday party.
“Fair enough,” Zhihui sighed, giving up on the idea. She wanted to stand up for her friend, but seeing how mild Anna’s reaction was, she realized the girl didn’t seem to hold much resentment.
Then again, getting paid handsomely by the Wang family was its own form of justice.
“So, are you seeing anyone yet?” Feng Anna asked, a mischievous glint in her eyes.
“Still single since birth,” Zhihui said, pretending to sound pitiful.
“Then… is there someone you like?” Anna pressed on.
At that question, an image flashed in Zhihui’s mind—that guy she saw earlier, casually leaning against a wall, talking on the phone. Her heart skipped just thinking about him.
Feng Anna picked up on her reaction immediately. “Ohhh, sounds like someone’s got a crush. What does he do? Is he good-looking?”
“I wish I knew,” Zhihui sighed.
“What do you mean?”
“Do you believe in love at first sight?” Zhihui asked suddenly.
“Nope,” Anna said with certainty.
“I didn’t either… until just a few minutes ago. Now I do.”
Zhihui wasn’t the type to bottle up her feelings, especially not with her best friend. So she let it all out.
“Oh my god. Just how handsome is this guy, if even a leggy bombshell like you got smitten?” Anna looked amazed.
“He’s just… exactly my type. Every inch of him matches my taste perfectly,” Zhihui said dreamily, her face softening as she recalled the moment.
“Well, if fate gives you another chance to see him, you’d better introduce me,” Anna grinned.
“I don’t even know if I’ll ever see him again,” Zhihui’s expression dimmed.
“Come on, if fate brought you two together once, it’ll bring you together again,” Anna consoled her gently.
Zhihui still looked troubled, but there was nothing more she could do. All that was left was to leave it in the hands of destiny.
“See if you can get time off, okay? If you do, let me know. Let’s meet up tomorrow, do some shopping, catch up like old times,” Zhihui said.
“Alright,” Feng Anna nodded earnestly.
They chatted for a little longer, then ended the call.
It wasn’t time for afternoon classes yet.
Feng Anna opened WeChat, found Wang Haoran’s contact, and sent a video call request.
Beep.
Call declined.
The villa wasn’t far from Qingling University, and if she listened closely, she could hear the distant ringing of the class bell.
Later in the afternoon, she tried calling again, timing it with the end of a class.
Once more, her call was declined.
Not wanting to be a bother, she decided to wait until Wang Haoran returned home to bring it up in person.
Meanwhile, on the other side.
Wang Haoran declined Feng Anna’s call, not because he didn’t want to answer but simply because he was tied up with something.
Once he finished, he called Tang Bingyun.
“Wanna catch a movie?”
Hearing his cheerful voice over the phone, Tang Bingyun, though busy handling company affairs, pushed everything aside and agreed to meet.
Time slipped by quietly, and evening soon approached.
Wang Haoran drove alone, leaving the couple’s hotel behind and heading straight for the Wang family estate.
