Chapter 16: Chapter 16

Lysander’s pov

"W-what - h-how are you doing this?" I could barely hear myself over the blood rushing into my head.

"Keep watching and I’ll show you." He promised.

I didn’t want to keep watching. On the contrary, a voice at the back of my brain screamed at me to get far, far away from him.

Survival instincts kicked in and I stumbled backwards. The back of my calves hit the side of the bed.

An arm darted out in a flash, curving my waist and pulling me tight against his chest. I froze, staring into the nightmare in his eyes.

"Isn’t the weather lovely today?" He said calmly, that same faint smile on his mouth. "Come on, let’s have a look at the sky."

My feet were dragged against their will to the window. His arm was gripping my waist. There was no escape, I realized as of terror raced down my spine.

Mute, I trembled with fear. The professor looked at the horizon for a moment before stretching out his bleeding hand.

As if on cue, a little bird flew towards us, settling onto his palm. It twittered, angling its head this way and that way curiously.

He stroked its plain tail feathers with his thumb, a small smile playing on his lips. He looked so calm and peaceful, a complete contrast to how I felt. "Watch closely."

That was the only warning I got before the bird suddenly angled its head downwards as if possessed by an unseeable force.

It pecked at his open wound, tearing and digging into his flesh.

The acrid, pungent taste of horror filled my mouth, the professor watched the bird without a trace of - discomfort, as if it wasn’t actively ripping out bits of his flesh. I closed my eyes, unable to bear it.

What the fuck was happening?

His voice snaked around me to whisper in my ear, "Look."

My eyes wrenched themselves open. Heart pounding, I watched as the bird froze abruptly, falling onto its back. Its frame shook with convulsive spasms that lasted for a whole minute before it stopped moving.

Dead. It was dead.

"Poor little thing " He murmured, but there was no actual sympathy in his voice.

I watched in a terror induced haze as he tossed the carcass out of the window with a flick of his wrist.

He didn’t give a shit, I realized dazedly. He had killed that bird and hadn’t even flinched.

This had to be a terrible nightmare. I would wake up soon.

Wake up! lysander! I screamed at myself, but my body didn’t budge. Wake the fuck up!

The professor’s crimson gaze fell on me, and my trembling worsened. His bloodied fingers came up to push away the hair that lingered close to my face.

"Now," he began in a soft voice. He looked amused at my expense. "You might be incredibly naïve, but I know you’re not a fool. With what you just saw, do you still think I’m human?"

I was going to pass out.

I blinked against the wave of dizziness that distorted my view of him. His expression was as impassive as ever, like he didn’t care one way or another if I was losing my shit or not. He sure as hell didn’t look like he had just flung my world into oblivion.

I couldn’t remember his earlier question. All I could think about was the fact that he had let that bird die. My mind kept looping the image of it spasming, struggling and failing to hang on to life.

"Lysander." I startled as his voice perforated the haze of my thoughts. "Look at me."

I was scared to. I was scared not to.

In the end, I managed to drag my gaze up to his. His eyes were still red, and there was no hint of sympathy in them.

"You’re scared." He observed.

Of course I was scared. I was terrified. I wanted to leave, but I knew he wouldn’t let me. Instead, I stammered out a reply.

"W-why did you d-do that?"

"To show you." He said matter-of-factly. "You wanted to know."

"I didn’t ask you to kill that bird!" I burst out. "What the fuck are you?"

"Mind your tone." I barely processed the warning in his voice.

"My name is Drake Balthazar."

Yeah, that was a no brainer. It was literally his name. "That doesn’t explain what you are."

He actually sighed, like I was the one being difficult.

"Mortals." He heaved out a breath before he continued, "In human terms, I’m what you call a vampire."

I had to be on something. Maybe he had put drugs in my drink or food because there was no way this was to be taken seriously.

"You can’t be serious."

"I am." He counted easily.

"You’re what, a bat? Like Count Dracula?" I gaped.

The professor scowled. "I’ll let that comment slide because you don’t know any better."

I wanted to laugh. I wanted to laugh and laugh and laugh myself awake, This had to be a nightmare.

If it wasn’t a hallucination, then I was still asleep in my room, resting from Gideon’s assault.

"I am dreaming." I mumbled to myself. "This has to be a dream."

"You’re not dreaming." He said wryly.

"This is a lucid dream." I nodded to myself. "I’Il wake up any moment now."

The corner of his lips quirked up, revealing more of his fangs. I felt my knees grow weak. "Oh, shit."

The professor watched me with curiosity. I could tell he was deciding if he wanted to hit me or hurt me. My eyes were wide and pleading with this to be a dream, he shook his head and rubbed the back of his neck.

"For someone so smart, you can be incredibly thick at times." He pinched my cheek. The sting made me jerk. I hissed. "There. It wouldn’t have hurt if you were dreaming."

He was right. I wasn’t dreaming.

This was real. Professor Drake was a... a vampire.
