Chapter 22: Chapter 22
Drake’s pov
My scent mixed with his and sec clung to everything, but it was concentrated most violently on Lysander. The slender man was practically bathed in it, my sharp, spicy mark completely drowning out his natural musk.
Beside me, Vesper’s eyes flicked over the room, taking in the unmistakable stench of absolute possession.
On the wide mattress, Lysander lay pale, unconscious, and shivering. He was tossing restlessly from side to side, tiny, pitiful moans slipping past his lips.
An unwelcome spike of anxiety soured my scent, though I kept my face entirely impassive. I crossed the bedroom in long, swift strides, leaning down over Lysander and gripping his jaw, turning his head from side to side to check his pulse and temperature.
"What’s wrong with him?" I growled. "He was fine when I left him."
Vesper’s gaze swept over Lysander’s bruised body, lingering deliberately on his flushed, swollen cock down below.
"Judging from how battered he looks," Vesper drawled smoothly, "I’ll go out on a limb and say you fucked him like you were trying to break him. That’s likely the cause of his fever."
I shot him a deadly glare, my eyes flashing a deep, dangerous crimson. "Mind your words, Vesper, or I’ll cut your tongue out."
He didn’t even flinch. He knew as well as I did that his standing with the Council and his value as a seer made him too much of an asset for me to execute over an insult.
"You can’t keep taking him this hard," he continued, completely unbothered. "He’s a frail human, Drake. Their bodies aren’t built for endurance the same way ours are. If you keep using him like this, he will eventually break."
"I understand," I bit out, the impatience in my chest rising to a boil. "Now are you going to stand there and lecture me, or are you going to fucking help him?"
Vesper walked over to the edge of the mattress. "He’ll be fine." He casually extended a hand, splaying his pale fingers over Lysander’s lower abdomen. I bristled, glaring at his hand near my mate’s skin. "You left something inside him. What is it?"
I blinked, taking a second to recall. "A vibrating egg. I forgot to take it out."
Vesper’s eyes dropped to the heavy bulge pressing prominently against the front of my black trousers before meeting my gaze again. "Speaking of things that need attention, you look like you could use some relief yourself."
I glanced down at my crotch distractedly, my eyes snapping right back to Lysander’s shivering form. "It can wait."
"You sure?" He hummed, a amused tilt to his voice. "I’m sure there’s a long line of low-ranking vampires who would kill to help you with that. You could call one over right now."
"Vesper," I muttered, my lips thinning into a dangerous line.
He ignored the warning in my tone entirely. "Or if you prefer humans, they can find one for you. One much gentler than him, it looks like he tried to rip a chunk out of your wrist."
I knew Vesper wouldn’t offer to help me himself. We both knew better. Vesper was dominant in the bedroom, used to being in control, and judging by the state I left my partners in, our dynamic would be an absolute disaster.
God only knew what those senile old fools in the Council were thinking when they arranged for Vesper to be my official mate. Our personalities clashed far too much. If ascending the throne didn’t require the alliance to solidify my influence, I would have rejected the arrangement the second they proposed it.
"I don’t know why we’re still discussing this," I muttered coldly. "You know I can’t stand those fools."
"True," Vesper remarked softly. "You’ve always looked down on everyone. Nothing ever holds your interest for long... except, apparently, this human."
I ignored him. Lysander being my mate was the official reason I kept him close, but even I couldn’t deny the sheer, obsessive intensity with which I had claimed him tonight.
"He needs to eject the toy," Vesper said, shifting back to the matter at hand. "You put it so deep inside him it’ll be impossible to fish out without his assistance."
"He’s still asleep," I muttered.
I turned away, striding over to my walk-in closet. Returning a moment later with a plain black t-shirt, I wordlessly pulled it over Lysander’s head, smoothing it down to properly cover his bare skin.
"I can see that," Vesper said, pulling a small vial of glowing green liquid from the inner pocket of his riding jacket. "And you do know that covering him was completely unnecessary, right? I’m not attracted to him in the slightest."
My jaw tightened, a dark, uncompromising possessiveness flaring in my chest as I kept myself positioned between Vesper and the bed. "What does that potion do? Does he need to take it?"
Vesper rolled his eyes at my reaction. "He needs to drink this. It will shock his system into waking up—like a forced reboot."
I took the vial from his hand, uncorking it after leaning down to pull Lysander up against my chest. I used my palm to wipe the cold sweat from his forehead, holding him tightly against my heat.
When I pressed the glass rim to his lips, he didn’t swallow. Sighing, I improvised. I tipped a small quantity of the bitter liquid into my own mouth, then brought my lips down onto his.
My fingers pressed firmly into Lysander’s cheeks, forcing his jaw to slacken so I could seat the potion down his throat. As I felt his throat work to swallow the fluid, my free hand rubbed slow, steady circles over his back, attempting to soothe the tension in his unconscious frame.
"It’s peculiar seeing you like this," Vesper noted from the side, watching with quiet amusement. "You were only ever this careful with Julian. And even then, you were never this gentle."
I ignored the mention of Julian, focusing entirely on the man in my arms, waiting for the potion to take hold.
It didn’t take long. Within moments, Lysander’s eyelids fluttered open. He blinked blindly, remaining relaxed against my chest for a mere fraction of a second before his entire spine went rigid.
The moment consciousness hit him, he scrambled violently out of my arms, tearing himself away and retreating to the far corner of the bed. His wide, terrified eyes locked onto us. As he moved, the forgotten toy inside him must have hit a sensitive nerve, because a breathless, pained moan hissed past his teeth.
I could smell the sharp, metallic bite of raw fear and burning resentment rolling off him in waves.
Lysander’s eyes darted frantically between me and Vesper, his head snapping back and forth so fast he looked completely panicked.
"What... what is going on?" his voice trembled, thin and broken. "Who is he, and what is he doing here?"
My expression remained unreadable. I didn’t break eye contact with him for a second, tracking every micro-movement he made. My fingers flexed tightly around the empty glass vial before I thrust it back toward Vesper.
"He’s awake," I said flatly to Vesper, rising silently from the mattress while deliberately ignoring Lysander’s frantic questions. "Now what?"
Vesper’s lips curved into a slow, mocking smirk as he took the vial back.
"Oh..." Vesper drawled smoothly, his eyes dancing between the two of us. "It seems your human thoroughly hates Your Majesty."
