Chapter 23: Chapter 23

Drake’s pov

Something was fundamentally wrong with Lysander.

Even from where I stood at the foot of the bed, I could feel the unnatural wave of heat rolling off his skin. His entire frame vibrated with continuous tremors because his mortal blood was actively waging war against my power. His body was fighting itself, resisting the violent shift my energy had forced into his system.

I watched him closely as his gaze darted frantically between Vesper and me. Vesper was studying him back with that cool, detached amusement that always irritated me, his eyes swept over Lysander’s form with zero sign of modesty.

Sensing the scrutiny, Lysander squirmed under the covers, dragging his eyes away and staring down at his lap.

I stood beside the mattress, maintaining an outward mask of complete, icy composure.

"Vesper," I prompted.

Vesper tilted his head slightly, his dark curls swaying against his shoulders. "It’s precisely as I stated moments ago, Drake. He needs to eject the device lodged inside him before the inflammation makes it impossible." He turned his attention directly to Lysander, his voice smooth. "How are you feeling, little human?"

"Like shit," Lysander rasped out, his throat raw. He immediately clamped a hand over his mouth, suppressing a dry, painful cough that rattled his chest.

"A completely expected reaction, given the sheer brutality of what His Majesty subjected you to," Vesper remarked casually. He stepped closer, extending a pale hand to press his palm firmly against Lysander’s lower abdomen. "It’s lodged far too deep within the tract. You’re going to have to actively contract your core muscles and bear down while someone manually assists from the outside. That is where Drake comes in."

"No." The refusal left Lysander’s lips before Vesper could even finish the sentence. Panic flared in his dark eyes as he tried to scramble back against the headboard. "No way. If I really need medical help, I’ll take my chances at a hospital."

Vesper let out a low, mocking chuckle, resting his hands on his hips. "And what, precisely, do you intend to tell the emergency room physicians? That you engaged in aggressive sex with an ancient, apex predator? You would be placed under heavy psychiatric hold before the hour is out."

Vesper was right, and Lysander knew it. A human entering a public medical facility in his current state would trigger immediate law enforcement protocol. The authorities would launch an investigation, his family would be notified, and the fragile illusion of his human life would shatter instantly.

More importantly, I would never allow him to leave this room, let alone step foot into a human facility.

I remained motionless, my expression completely unreadable, but the subtle flare of my aura made the air in the room grow heavy.

He swallowed hard, his knuckles white against the bedsheets. "Fine," he whispered, his voice trembling. "Fine. But I don’t want him touching me. You do it." He looked up at Vesper, a desperate, humiliating plea softening his features. "Please."

Vesper let out a soft, regretful tutting sound. "Regrettably, that is entirely out of the question—"

"You want me out of the room," I interrupted.

It was phrased as a statement rather than a question. My crimson gaze had receded back to its standard, icy state, but the tension in my jaw remained tight.

Lysander stiffened his spine, forcing himself to meet my eyes despite the visible terror swimming in his gaze. "Yes," he whispered tightly. "Get out."

I absorbed his rejection without letting a single crack show in my composure. I could feel him holding his breath, braced for me to snap, expecting me to punish him for asserting himself after everything that had transpired.

I held his gaze for a long, agonizing second, letting the silence stretch until the air vibrated. Then, I broke eye contact, turning my head toward my betrothed.

"Take care of him," I commanded flatly.

A brief flicker of genuine shock crossed Vesper’s face before his usual, infuriating composure returned. "Of course, Your Majesty. Leave the human to me."

My eyes flicked back to Lysander for one last, fleeting moment, taking in his flushed skin and trembling lips, before I turned on my heel and walked out of the bedroom, closing the heavy oak doors quietly behind me.

Outside in the corridor, the silence of the grand hallway was deafening.

I stood motionless against the wall, my fingers curling tightly into the palms of my hands. My cock was still rock-hard beneath my trousers, aching with an intolerable, persistent throbbing that refused to abate. My power was surging violently under my skin, practically screaming at me to break down the door, throw Vesper aside, and claim Lysander until he couldn’t remember his own name.

Inside the room, I could hear every whisper through the thick wood.

I heard Vesper chuckle softly, his voice muffled. "Whipped," he muttered under his breath.

"What?" Lysander’s defensive voice carried through.

"Nothing you need to concern yourself with, little human. Not while you’re burning up with fever," Vesper replied, "As you are aware, I am Vesper. I handle medical research and specialized care for the high houses. You are in capable hands."

"Medical research?" Lysander echoed, his voice laced with deep mistrust. "You’re not human, are you?"

"Not in the slightest."

"So you’re a vampire too?"

"What gave it away?" Vesper asked smoothly.

"Aside from the fact that you and Drake seem to know each other, your eyes are completely bizarre," Lysander blurted out. I could hear the faint rustle of sheets as he shifted, followed by a quiet gasp of regret. "I... I’m sorry. I’m not usually this rude."

"Do not apologize," Vesper murmured, the sound of latex gloves snapping echoing through the door. "Given what His Majesty put you through tonight, you have earned the right to be somewhat abrasive. Just keep it within reason, or the King will throw a temper tantrum."

I gritted my teeth, a dangerous growl rising in my throat. Vesper was pushing his luck.

"What is actually wrong with me?" Lysander asked, his voice dropping into a smaller, far more vulnerable register. "Why does my skin feel like it’s on fire?"

"You are running a high fever induced by violent power shock, and the mechanical toy is still wedged tightly against your inner walls. Once I extract it, your body will begin to stabilize."

"Is it really that simple? I feel like I’m dying."

"Vampiric intimacy is an exhausting endeavor for a mortal," Vesper explained coolly. "Now, lie flat on your back. Keep your knees bent and your thighs parted."
