Chapter 29: Chapter 29

Lysander’s pov

I looked out of the window, watching the city buildings whizz past us as the car sped smoothly down the open highway.

The suffocating fear that had gripped my chest at Drake’s place had finally lessened, leaving me able to breathe a little better.

"You doing okay, sweet boy?" Darius’s concerned voice pulled my attention away from the blurred glass.

I turned my head toward him, forcing a small, reassuring nod. "Yeah. I’m just... a little tired."

"That’s completely understandable," Darius murmured softly, his tone filled with genuine warmth. "After what you’ve been through today, you need a lot of rest."

I offered him a faint, wan smile, pulling my legs a little closer to my chest.

Darius had taken me to a private clinic immediately after we left Drake’s apartment complex.

He hadn’t forced me to answer any intrusive questions, just gently ushered me into the hands of a doctor he seemed to be close friends with.

He had waited patiently in the lobby until I was fully cleared, then whisked me away before anyone else could pry into my business.

I was immensely grateful for his quiet protection.

I wasn’t sure I would ever be able to admit the full, terrifying extent of what Drake had done to me.

And Gideon. God, I couldn’t forget that bastard’s sick, twisted cruelty.

I glanced over at Darius again as he navigated the afternoon traffic.

Darius was a grounding constant in my life, always present and ready to help, but never demanding anything in return.

He hadn’t even insisted I call him ’Dad,’ even though I knew deep down my mom secretly wished I would embrace him that way.

He was a remarkably good husband to my mother, showering her with the devotion and love my biological father had never been able to give her.

His gaze was focused straight ahead at the road, one hand resting easily on the leather steering wheel as he drove.

His designer shirt-sleeves were neatly rolled up to his elbows, revealing muscular forearms lightly dusted with dark hair.

Though Darius was well into his early forties, he was drop-dead gorgeous by anyone’s standards.

His eyes, a startling shade of steel-blue that glimmered every time he smiled, were framed by thick, dark brows.

There was barely any hint of grey in his raven-black hair, which was always perfectly groomed and styled to complement his diamond-cut jawline.

He looked like he could easily be a professional model or an A-list movie star and it wasn’t merely his physical appearance, it was his commanding aura.

There was something about the effortless way he carried himself in high-society circles that was undeniably attractive.

He was genuinely good for my mom, providing the stability she had lacked for so many years.

And fortunately, the only single thing he shared with his son Gideon was his dark hair.

Darius was completely dissimilar to his son in every way that mattered.

He was calm where Gideon was pure chaos, and deeply caring where Gideon was sadistically cruel.

I felt overwhelmingly grateful to have him in my life, mentally thanking my mother for marrying him every single day.

"Lysander," Darius began gently, his attention remaining fixed on the road ahead. "I know you probably don’t want to talk about what happened today, and you certainly don’t have to."

"But... if you ever need someone to vent to, or a shoulder to lean on, I am always here for you, sweet boy."

My eyes watered instantly at his words.

I quickly reached up, dashing away the stray tears with the edge of my sleeve before they could fall down my cheeks.

"Yeah. I... I know. Thank you, Darius."

Silence settled comfortably between us in the leather interior for a short while, heavy with unspoken understanding.

Then, before I could stop myself, the words began spilling from my mouth in a sudden, unstoppable rush.

I told him everything or at least, as much as I could bear to tell him without divulging how brutally Drake had taken my body.

I told him how petrified I’d been while watching that poor, helpless bird die, wondering if I would be the next victim on Drake’s floor.

I explained how Drake had transformed from a handsome, charismatic guy I had a massive crush on into a horrifying monster with fangs and red eyes.

I confessed how impossibly relieved I felt the exact moment Darius had showed up at the apartment door to rescue me.

"It’s a very good thing I came when I did then," Darius said softly, "Lord only knows what he ultimately planned to do with you if you had stayed."

Keep me as his private sex slave and living blood bag, most likely.

The terrifying thought made a violent shudder run down my spine.

"How did you even know where to find me?" I asked, pulling my jacket tighter around myself. "I didn’t tell a single person where I was going."

"I went to your campus dorms today after you didn’t come home or answer your phone last night," Darius explained smoothly.

"A quick look at the security footage outside showed you leaving the school environment with Drake."

"Since I happen to know exactly where Drake maintains his personal residence, I rushed straight over to get you back."

I accepted the explanation without hesitation, it made complete sense given his resources.

"How did you find out about Drake in the first place?" I asked, curiosity piqued. "I’m sure it’s not common knowledge that vampires exist."

He let out a low, warm chuckle. "You’re right about that, Lysander. The world would be in absolute chaos if the public knew."

"I only know about their existence because my family has been managing medical affairs for vampire nobility for generations."

I blinked, shifting in my seat to stare at him. "Wait... your family works directly for vampires?"

Darius’s blue eyes twinkled slightly. "That’s actually where the foundation of our family’s wealth comes from."

"We’ve served as their primary human liaisons and corporate handlers for over a century, managing their health while they remain in the shadows."

"Oh," I breathed out, completely stunned. "Wait... you said factions. Does that mean there are other creatures out there too?"

"Correct," Darius sounded undeniably proud."Vampires are only one of numerous ancient species roaming this earth alongside humans."

"There are living shapeshifters, ancients, and bloodlines older than modern history blending seamlessly into society."

I gaped at him, my jaw practically dropping. "Shapeshifters? Ancients? Are you serious?"

Darius offered a short, knowing laugh. "Yes, son. I know it’s hard to swallow, but they are very real."

"Unfortunately, a good number of them are ruthless creatures, especially the vampire high bloodlines."

"They have no real understanding of what it means to be civil or gentle with mortals."

His face grew deathly serious as he glanced over at me. "Drake is the worst of the worst among them. Promise me you’ll stay far away from him."

He didn’t need to tell me twice. "I promise. I never want to see him again."

Darius smiled warmly, the corners of his bright blue eyes crinkling comfortably. "Good boy. Now close your eyes and rest, we still have some time before we reach the estate."

I lowered my eyelids, leaning my head against the cool glass of the window.

The steady, purring engine of the luxury car lulled my exhausted body into a deep, dreamless sleep.

Darius gently shook my shoulder a while later when we finally pulled into the gated driveway of the villa.

Still sleepy-eyed and completely disoriented, I stumbled behind him into the warm house, heading straight toward the kitchen.

My mom, Elena, was standing by the stove, putting the finishing touches on a late dinner for us.
