Chapter 88: Chapter 88
Darius’s pov
Gideon whipped his head in shock to stare at me, his eyes wide, dilated, and demanding answers.
His jaw hung open, his face draining of all color as he looked back and forth between me and Elena. But I couldn’t look at him.
My eyes were locked onto Elena, pinning her with a glare that could burn straight through slate.
I opened my mouth, but my throat was entirely dry. No sound came out. I closed it again, unable to form any words.
Elena tilted her head, a cold, bitter smile warping her tear-streaked face. "Nothing to say now, Darius?" she taunted, "Nothing at all? You stupid bastard!"
Gideon took a slow, staggering step toward me. The arrogant, sneering brat who had been mocking her seconds ago was completely gone. In his place stood a boy whose entire reality had just been pulled out from under his feet.
"Is it true?" He asked in a small voice.
I ignored him. I didn’t look at him. I kept staring daggers at Elena, my fists clenched so tight my fingernails bit deep into the blood-slicked palms of my hands.
She turned her head toward Gideon, her eyes sharp, hollow, and merciless. "Go on, Darius. Tell your son how you killed his mother," she mocked, before looking directly into Gideon’s pale, trembling face.
"How does it feel, Gideon? How does it feel knowing that both of your parents didn’t want you? Except your father made damn sure that was the only outcome. At least my sweet boy was loved. He had his real father before we got divorced and he had me. But because this filthy, rotted family doesn’t know the first thing about love, you both tried to tear my son down to your level!"
"Shut your fucking mouth about Lysander!" Gideon screamed, his composure snapping like glass. He turned on her, his face turning an ugly, blotchy red. "He wasn’t special! You think you were a mother to him? You ignored your previous boy because you were too busy getting high off Darius’s money!"
"You are just like your father, a disgusting piece of shit!" Elena shrieked, taking a step into his face, her chest heaving violently. "How insane can you be to assault your little brother!"
"He let me!" Gideon yelled back, his voice cracking, his hands shaking in the air between them. "He never fought back! He sat there and took it because he knew his place in this house! He knew he was nothing without us!"
"You sick, twisted animal!" Elena sobbed, swinging her arm with everything she had, her fingernails catching Gideon across the cheekbone.
Gideon stumbled back, his hand flying to the red welts forming on his face. His eyes went completely dark.
Without a second of hesitation, he lunged forward and shoved her shoulder hard, sending her crashing against the edge of the heavy mahogany desk.
"Don’t touch me!" Gideon roared, his breathing ragged and wild. "Don’t you ever fucking put your hands on me again! You’re nothing in this company! You’re nothing in this house! You were just the trophy wife my father brought in to keep up appearances after he wiped his slate clean!"
Elena gasped for air, holding her side where she hit the dark wood, but her eyes never lost their lethal, mocking glitter. "And what are you, Gideon? Look at yourself! Look at your hands! You’re just a cheap copy of a murderer! You spent your whole life begging for his approval, begging him to treat you like a son, and he looks at you like you’re garbage!"
"Dad!" Gideon spun back to me, his voice pitching into a desperate, furious screech that vibrated through the high wood-paneled ceiling. "Tell her to shut up! Tell me she’s lying!"
"Shut the hell up, Elena!" I barked, taking a heavy step forward, my bad shoulder throbbing with a sickening heat. "How the hell did you find out anyway?! Who spoke to you?! Who gave you those records?!"
CRASH!
The heavy crystal vase on the side table shattered into a thousand jagged shards against the hardwood floorboards as Gideon kicked it with all his strength.
He stood over the broken glass, "Is that what’s fucking important right now?!" he screamed, his voice ringing in my ears until they buzzed.
He marched across the rug, shoving past Elena so hard her shoulder clipped the wall, and got straight in my face. He jabbed his trembling finger into my chest, his breath hot and ragged against my skin. "Is it fucking true what this bitch is talking about?! Did you kill my mother?!"
"What kind of question is that?!" I yelled back, shoving his arm away with my good hand. "Can’t you see she’s delirious?! She just lost her son! She’s out of her fucking mind and she’ll say and do anything to break us apart!"
"Look at me!" He screamed, grabbing the lapels of my torn jacket with both hands, shaking me with a strength I didn’t know he had. "Look me in the eyes and tell me you didn’t do it! Tell me my mother died naturally and you had nothing to do with it!"
"Let go of me, you foolish boy!" I snarled, striking his wrists down. "You’re listening to the ramblings of a broken woman who can’t handle that her son is an online whore."
Gideon glared at me, his jaw working violently, his eyes searching my face for a single thread of truth. I didn’t give him one.
Slowly, he turned his head back to Elena. He stepped over the shattered glass, his leather boots crunching heavily against the crystal shards,
"Are you sure about what you’re saying?" he asked, his eyes boring into hers. "Did my father kill my mother?"
Elena chuckled. She crossed her arms over her torn blouse, looking at him as if he were a bug pinned to a board.
"Why would I tell you such vital information?" She teased. "Why would I give you closure when both of you have spent years keeping something so grave from me? Why would I give either of you a single second of peace?"
Gideon rolled his eyes, a sudden wave of disgust washing over his features as he snapped out of his shock, trying to regain his footing. "Oh, shut up!" he yelled, waving his hand dismissively at her face. "Shut the fuck up and stop talking about Lysander! I am so tired of hearing about your precious little golden boy!"
He stepped closer to her, his sneer returning, vicious and sharp. "You were a terrible mother! You didn’t give a damn about him until he was gone! So what if I wanted a taste of Lysander?! What’s so bad about that?! He lived in our house, he ate our food, he was available! I took what was available!"
Elena didn’t flinch. She stepped right up to him and spat straight in his face.
Gideon reeled back, wiping the thick saliva from his cheek with the back of his sleeve, the veins in his neck were beginning to pop.
"You both disgust me," Elena spat, "You are two rot-filled, pathetic monsters. And I swear on my life, I will make sure you both pay for every single thing you did to my sweet boy."
She turned her eyes back to me, and I started to shake my head when I saw a familiar glint in her eyes.
"But go on, Darius," Elena purred, stepping back toward the open doorway. "Explain it to him. Tell your son how you murdered his mother... all because the woman caught you in the dark and realized her perfect husband was nothing but a down-low, gay pervert."
