Chapter 89: Chapter 89
Darius’s pov
"Dad?" Gideon prompted, his voice cracking down the middle.
His tone should have cracked open the paternal side of me but looking at him, I couldn’t feel anything for the life of me.
My lips felt like dry salt. I opened my mouth, but no sound came out, I couldn’t find a single word in my mind that wouldn’t sound like a full confession.
How could I possibly come clean and disappoint myself?
"Dad!" He screamed.
I met his eyes and saw a different side of craziness staring back at me.
"You are not going to talk, huh?" He nodded to himself, "I have been asking you to tell me the truth now, have you gone mute?"
I shook my head, unable to come up with anything.
"So this is how it’s going to be?" He chuckled, "okay then, have it your way."
It was like a switch went off in his head because he wailed and lunged for the antique display case against the wall, shoving it with all his strength. The thick glass shattered, spilling debris of crystal on the floor.
He grabbed a heavy bronze bust off my side table and threw it straight through the floor-to-ceiling window. The heavy glass imploded, scattering papers across the rug.
"Tell me she’s lying!" He shrieked, his face blotchy, heavy tears finally spilling over his bloodshot eyes.
He grabbed a heavy mahogany chair and slammed it repeatedly against the edge of the desk until the legs splintered into raw firewood. "Say something! Say it isn’t true! Fuck, say something to me!"
"Gideon, stop! Calm down!" I yelled, trying to reach for him with my good arm, but he backed away violently, swinging a broken chair leg wildly in the air to keep me at bay.
"Don’t touch me!" he sobbed, his shoulders shaking as he collapsed against the ruined frame of the desk, clutching his head in his hands. He was hyperventilating, wiping snot and tears from his face with the back of his sleeve, looking at me like a terrified, broken child who had just watched his whole world burn.
"You took her from me... I needed her, Dad! I sat in that hospital room for days and waited for her to wake up! You told me her heart failed! You told me she just went to sleep!"
He dropped the piece of wood, his knees buckling as he sank straight onto the shattered glass on the floor, ignoring the sharp shards digging into his palms and bleeding into the carpet.
"I miss her..." he wept, his voice dropping into a ragged, pitiful choke. "Every single day... I hated myself because I thought she died because I wasn’t good enough... and you killed her! You murdered my mom! I fucking hate you! I want nothing to do with you! I wish it was you in that ground!"
From the edge of the doorway, a low, cruel chuckle cut through his sobs.
Elena stood there, watching Gideon crumble with a terrifying, serene satisfaction. She slowly nodded her head, her dark, tear-streaked eyes glittering as she took in his total emotional collapse.
"Look at you," she murmured, "It’s good that you’re feeling it. Feel every single drop of that grief, Gideon."
Gideon looked up through his tears, his jaw trembling, but Elena offered him no mercy whatsoever.
"You are a horrible, vile person," she said softly, stepping closer to where he knelt in the glass. "You had an opportunity to have a mother in me. I came into this house ready to love you, ready to build a family. But instead, you hated me. You disrespected me at every single turn, and then you turned around and assaulted my innocent boy."
She smiled coldly, "Karma comes in so many ways, Gideon. You will forever be this trapped, pathetic little boy, begging for a mother’s love that you are never, ever going to get."
She turned her gaze from Gideon to me. Her hands didn’t tremble anymore. She slowly reached up to her left hand, unthreading the massive diamond ring from her finger. Without a word of warning, she whipped it straight at my head.
The heavy band struck me sharp across the cheekbone, cutting the skin before bouncing off the floorboards.
"I can’t call the police," her voice had gone flat just like her eyes. "Because I don’t stand a chance against your legal team, and because I don’t have proof yet. But you will pay for everything you two monsters did to my son. I’m divorcing you, Darius. I’m taking everything I can, and I am leaving you to rot in this house."
Gideon let out a harsh, wet laugh from the floor, wiping his bloody face with his trembling sleeve as he pushed himself up to his feet.
"Haha... very nice," he sneered, his voice still shaky from crying, though his eyes hardened. "Now that you’ve finally came to your senses, step aside. Instead of wasting my fucking time in this room listening to two old people collapse, I’m going to find Lysander."
Elena’s face instantly snapped into a mask of pure terror. "Don’t you dare go near my son!" she screamed.
Gideon didn’t stop. He walked right past her toward the doorway, pausing right in front of her face. A sickening, unhinged grin spread across his features, and he violently thrusted his hips in the air directly at her.
"When I get Lysander back," he whispered, "what I did to him on that stream is going to look like mercy compared to what I have planned for him now. Say goodbye to whatever sweet memory you have left of him, Elena... because I am going to turn him into my fucking bitch."
"Gideon, stop!" I barked, stepping toward him, my bad shoulder throbbing painfully with a sickening heat. "You won’t be able to get through to Lysander now! Things have changed."
He turned his head, casting a cold, disdainful glare over his shoulder at me. "That’s the difference between me and you, father. I am not a weak-ass," he spat, "I actually succeed."
"You don’t mean that," I told him.
He chuckled, "I do. You are a weakling and I am disappointed to have you as a father. You are pathetic."
"Gideon! Come back here! Don’t you touch him!" Elena yelled, her voice pitching into a frantic, terrified shriek as he pushed past her into the corridor.
Gideon didn’t look back. He kept walking down the long hallway, his heavy boots echoing off the marble floor, leaving behind a trail of blood and destruction.
"Stay away from my son!" Elena screamed after him, her voice ringing out through the empty, hollow halls of the estate. "Stay away from him!"
