"Come back whenever you like, all of you," Ronan said, waving to the entire family.
"The doors of the Stone Shield Inn will always be open to the Dmonds."
Ronan then looked at Lukas, his eyes shining with a knowledge that seemed to go beyond what a simple innkeeper should possess.
"Train hard, boy. I’m sure I’ll be hearing a lot about you in the future."
Lukas smiled, feeling a warmth rise in his chest at the man’s words.
"Thank you, Mr. Ronan. I’ll devote myself to my studies."
After exchanging farewells, bowing slightly to Aurora, shaking hands with Clavor, and giving Lukas a friendly pat on the shoulder, they all boarded the carriage.
The horses, two sturdy chestnut-colored animals, slowly began to trot.
The carriage slowly passed through the gates of Great Rock City, leaving behind the stone walls and the constant bustle of its streets. The road stretched out before them, bordered by green fields that extended as far as the eye could see.
The journey home had begun.
...
About eight hours later...
The sun was already beginning to sink toward the horizon once again when Dmond Manor finally came into view. The imposing estate stood atop a hill, surrounded by ancient trees and meticulously maintained gardens. Its glass windows reflected the golden light of dusk, and the family banner, a silver three-tailed wolf upon a blue field, fluttered in the wind atop the main tower.
As soon as the carriage came to a stop, Lukas practically jumped out, his boots striking the packed earth.
The familiar air of the estate filled his lungs, the scent of freshly cut grass, the fragrance of flowers blooming in the gardens, and the faint aroma of wood burning in the fireplaces.
Astra immediately landed on his shoulder, flapping her wings with a satisfied screech. The young eagle had spent most of the journey flying above the carriage and now seemed pleased to finally rest.
She tilted her head, her yellow eyes fixed on Lukas’s, as though asking whether everything had gone well.
Lukas quickly crossed the courtyard, his pace quickening as he approached the wooded area behind the estate. He raised two fingers to his lips.
He let out a loud whistle.
The sound spread across the entire estate, weaving through the trees and echoing among the hills. Startled birds took flight from the nearby branches, and for a brief moment, everything fell silent.
Five minutes later...
The ground began to tremble.
A rhythmic vibration, like heavy footsteps, approached through the trees. The bushes shook, and then...
Tilbo emerged from the forest, his massive body forcing its way through the vegetation.
He had grown once again.
The giant ant, now nearly three meters long, moved with surprising grace for a creature of such enormous size. His massive mandibles gleamed beneath the setting sun, and his compound eyes reflected the sky in a kaleidoscope of colors.
Every step he took caused the ground to tremble slightly, and the sound of his legs striking the earth echoed like distant drums.
Lukas couldn’t help but widen his eyes.
"You’ve grown again..." he murmured in amazement.
"Tilbo, you’re almost as big as a horse now."
The giant ant happily approached, gently rubbing his enormous head against Lukas in a display of affection that, under any other circumstances, would have been terrifyingly dangerous.
Lukas laughed as he stroked the creature’s hard, gleaming carapace.
"Looks like you’ve been eating well while I was away, huh?"
Soon afterward, Prata appeared silently.
The giant spider glided through the shadows of the trees with a fluidity that defied her size. She was only a little over half of Tilbo’s size, yet her appearance remained incredibly intimidating.
Her long black legs moved with almost complete silence, and her many eyes gleamed with an intelligence that went beyond mere animal instinct.
To anyone else, the sight of a boy surrounded by a giant ant, a monstrous spider, and an eagle would have been terrifying. Even the manor’s servants, who had long grown accustomed to the creatures, still kept a respectful distance.
To Lukas...
It was simply a reunion with two dear friends.
He spent several minutes talking to the three of them, or rather, talking while they listened. He told them about the journey, about Great Rock City, about the market and all its curiosities, and finally, about the Awakening.
Naturally, they did not understand every word. But they seemed to grasp the essentials, that something important had happened, that their human friend had changed in some way.
Tilbo tilted his head, letting out a low, vibrating sound that Lukas interpreted as interest. Prata extended one of her legs, gently touching his shoulder with its tip in a gesture that might have been approval or curiosity.
Astra, on the other hand, simply seemed satisfied, as though she had known Lukas was special from the very first moment they had met.
When the sky began to darken, painted in shades of purple and indigo, Lukas returned inside the manor. The interior of the estate was warm and welcoming, with stone walls covered in tapestries and thick carpets that muffled every footstep. Fireplaces crackled in every room, filling the manor with warmth and light.
He had dinner with his family, a simple meal of vegetable soup, fresh bread, and cheese. The conversation was peaceful, accompanied by the clinking of cutlery and the crackling of the fireplace.
No one mentioned the Awakening again, as though the subject had been sealed away by an unspoken agreement.
Afterward, he took another quick bath, this time in a copper bathtub that the servants had filled with hot water. The steaming water relaxed his muscles, and he felt the fatigue from the journey slowly melt away.
He went to bed early.
The sheets were fresh and clean, and the pillow sank perfectly beneath his head. Outside, the wind whispered through the trees, and the distant calls of owls echoed through the night.
As he closed his eyes, he remembered Clavor’s words.
’Tomorrow morning, we’ll begin your training.’
An excited smile spread across his face. Finally. After years of waiting, after so many unanswered questions, his true path toward becoming strong was about to begin.
Lukas closed his eyes.
Sleep came quickly, wrapping him in its gentle embrace.
And as he slept, he dreamed of paths of light stretching into infinity while he soared across the world with countless abilities.
