The first ray of sunlight slipped through the thin bedroom curtains, drawing a golden line across Lukas’s face.
The warm light touched his closed eyelids, and his eyes opened almost instantly, as if that brightness were a natural alarm clock his body had already learned to recognize.
For a few seconds, he remained still, lying on the soft mattress, gazing at the dark wooden ceiling. The carved beams formed patterns he had known since childhood, and the morning breeze drifted through the half-open window, carrying the fresh scent of the nearby forest.
Then, a smile naturally appeared on his lips.
"Today..."
His heart suddenly began to race, as if it had received an electric jolt. Excitement swelled in his chest, warm and vibrant, making his fingers tighten slightly against the bedsheet.
His training would finally begin.
Just a few weeks ago, that moment had seemed so far away. Ever since awakening his two unique abilities, the anticipation had never left his mind for a single moment.
He wanted to learn. He wanted to understand how this world truly worked. He wanted to discover how people like his father, Clavor, could fight gigantic monsters using nothing but a sword and their own strength.
Above all... He wanted to become strong.
He still had no idea how that was accomplished. He didn’t know how to increase his strength beyond the ordinary exercises he already practiced.
He didn’t know how to use mana. He didn’t even fully understand what that mysterious energy everyone talked about so naturally actually was.
But he would learn.
He quickly sat up in bed, his agile movement revealing his youth and energy. His feet touched the cool wooden floor, and he stretched his arms above his head, feeling his muscles pleasantly loosen.
He put on a simple training outfit made from lightweight yet durable fabric that allowed complete freedom of movement.
The shirt had short sleeves and was light gray, while the pants were dark with reinforced stitching at the knees. He tightly fastened his leather boots, carefully adjusting the laces. He had already learned that poorly tied boots could ruin an entire training session.
He washed his face with the cold water from the basin beside the bed, feeling the refreshing shock against his skin. Water dripped from his chin, and he ran his wet hand through his white hair, quickly combing it back with his fingers. His violet eyes, still carrying traces of sleep, met their own reflection in the small mirror hanging on the wall.
The face staring back at him was young, yet it carried a determination uncommon for someone his age.
Then he took a deep breath, filling his lungs with the cool morning air.
He was ready.
As he walked downstairs in the manor, he was greeted by the pleasant aroma of breakfast, freshly baked bread, fried eggs, and something sweet coming from the kitchen, probably fruit jam.
The scent spread throughout the main hall, blending with the gentle warmth of the fireplace that still crackled softly, even with the sun already high in the sky.
Clavor, Aurora, and Judite were already seated at the table.
His sister yawned while holding a piece of bread in her hands, her eyes still half-closed and her hair slightly messy.
She had clearly been dragged out of bed much earlier than she would have liked. She chewed slowly, as though every bite required tremendous effort.
As soon as she saw her brother, she lazily raised one hand in greeting.
"Good morning..." Her voice came out sluggishly, almost inaudible.
Lukas chuckled softly, amused by the sight.
"Good morning, Judite."
Aurora smiled warmly, her gentle eyes meeting her son’s.
"Did you sleep well?"
"I did," he replied as he sat down, pulling the wooden chair back with a soft scrape.
"I woke up excited."
"Good." As always, she generously placed another piece of bread on his plate.
"Today will be an important day."
Beside her, Clavor simply nodded, his observant eyes fixed on his son.
"Good morning, son."
"Good morning, Father." The reply came quickly, almost automatically.
Lukas quickly sat down and began eating. The breakfast was simple but hearty. Freshly baked bread, still warm, with butter melting over its surface. Firm white cheese. Red berries and sliced apples. Creamy scrambled eggs seasoned to perfection. And warm milk with a touch of honey that pleasantly warmed his throat.
As they ate, conversation flowed naturally around the table.
Judite finished chewing a piece of bread before complaining with an exaggerated grimace.
"Master Thorne is going to make me study theory again... it’s so boring!"
Lukas laughed.
"You don’t like it?"
"I like magic!" she emphasized, slapping her hand against the table.
"I like throwing fire, making things appear, watching light shine between my fingers. I don’t like spending all day reading books about circles and flows and... boring stuff!"
Aurora smiled patiently, her voice calm and gentle.
"Knowledge is also part of training. You can’t master magic without understanding how it works. It’s like wanting to cook without knowing which ingredients to use."
Judite let out another long sigh, dramatically tilting her head back.
"I know... but I still think it’s boring..."
The conversation continued for a few more minutes, sprinkled with laughter and lighthearted comments, until everyone finished eating.
Clavor stood first, the sound of his chair scraping across the floor echoing through the hall.
He looked directly at Lukas, his eyes serious, yet carrying a spark of pride that only his son knew how to recognize.
"Let’s go."
The boy immediately stood up, his heart racing once more.
"Right."
His reply came out too quickly, revealing all of his anticipation and excitement.
Clavor smiled faintly, almost imperceptibly.
"Easy. The day is long."
The two bid farewell to Aurora and Judite before leaving the manor. The heavy door creaked shut behind them, and the cool morning air greeted their faces.
Lukas assumed they would train in the wide field beside the residence, where Judite usually practiced magic with Master Thorne. It was flat and open, with plenty of room to run and move freely.
But Clavor headed in a different direction.
The two walked behind the estate, crossing carefully maintained gardens where colorful flowers bloomed beneath the sunlight. They passed a vegetable garden filled with herbs and vegetables, where a maid respectfully bowed upon seeing them.
Then, they slowly entered the forest.
