One made a sound that Seris had never heard from him before.
It was a pure cry of pain, a low and terrible sound that almost immediately stopped.
His body fell from the trunk, landed on the ground, and did not move again.
"Lian!" Anger inside her burst into flames and her scream spread across the empty field.
This time there was no hesitation in her voice, she did not call Black Silence.
She did not call the Calamity.
She shouted Lian’s own name, but the creature in front of her did not even react to hearing his own name.
Seris’s remaining eye became cold.
If Lian still had control, he would never do something like this! There was no situation where Lian would do this to One.
One was not just a monster or a battle companion to him.
Seris had seen many times how strange and deep the bond between the two of them was.
So either Lian no longer existed, or he was buried so deep inside this creature that his presence made no difference for now.
She did not wait any longer, the panel in the corner of her vision flashed.
[Evolution Objective: Kill a Calamity.]
The sword rose and her body screamed from pain, but she sent the last remaining strength into her legs.
The ground under her feet broke, the young Pendragon shot toward Lian like a dark line.
[Moonless Rift.]
The sword moved toward his neck at full speed, the creature inside Lian only raised one hand.
It did not activate any skill and only tried to catch the attack with its palm, the edge of the sword stopped between its fingers.
For a moment, the girl could not believe it, all the power of the attack, the remaining mana, and the speed she had managed to create with a body that was almost destroyed.
All of it had been stopped with one hand...?
Even the blade did not move one centimeter forward and her remaining eye opened wider.
"..."
Before she could pull the sword back, Lian’s other hand grabbed her free wrist.
Seris immediately tried to free herself, the muscles in her arm tightened, she put her foot on the ground and pulled with all her strength.
Nothing happened, it was as if her wrist was stuck inside stone, the difference in their strength was already huge even under normal conditions.
But Lian’s stats alone were twice the total of hers.
And now? Seris was almost completely broken, a large part of her mana was gone.
Her muscles had been damaged from overusing the Mark Leaves and strengthening skills.
She had one eye missing, her legs were injured, and her ribs were broken.
This was not a battle, it was more like a fight between a deer and a tiger, the deer had no chance and could only make itself look like a clown by attacking.
Black Silence struck with its free hand, a simple slap landed on the girl’s face.
Crack!
But Seris’s head violently turned to one side, the skin on her unharmed cheek opened, her lower lip split, and blood sprayed from her mouth.
The bone under her eye made an unpleasant sound and the vision in her only remaining eye turned completely white for several seconds and her body became completely weak.
But Lian’s hand was still holding her wrist, then his fingers closed a little more, the young Pendragon first felt the pressure.
Then the pain and finally... crack.
The bone in her wrist broke.
Seris’s fingers opened without her control, the sword fell from her hand and landed on the ground with a metallic sound.
She let out a painful breath, she did not even have time to scream.
She struck Lian’s stomach with her knee, using almost all the strength she had left, but his body did not move, even his expression did not change.
Black Silence lifted Seris with one hand, her feet left the ground and then it threw her to the side.
The girl’s body rolled several times across the ground, her side and shoulder hit the ground and finally her back hit one of the dried roots of the tree and stopped there.
For several moments, no sound came from her, her body moved only once and then... became still.
Her breathing was so weak that she herself was not sure if she was still breathing.
But through her blurred vision, she saw Lian’s shadow coming toward her.
One step... then a second step.
Her mind no longer had the strength to think clearly, only one simple thought remained.
"He’s going to finish me."
It made sense.
If what she knew was true, Black Silence saw every living creature only as food.
Seris was still alive, One was still alive, Aren was still alive, and Selina was also unconscious not far away.
Why would it leave any of them alive?
Lian stood in front of Seris, his hand rose slightly, she did not even have the strength to lift her head, only her remaining eye was barely open.
Then the movement stopped, the same pause during the attack on One and this time it lasted a little longer, the purple light inside his eyes became weaker for a moment.
Something very weak moved deep inside him.
Black Silence remained still for several seconds, then lowered its hand and turned away.
Seris did not know why, and before she could even think about it, her consciousness completely faded.
But someone else had seen that pause.
Cindar Vael, and the smile on the Founder’s dry face became slightly weaker.
His golden eyes first fell on Seris, then on One and then back to Lian’s body.
Something was wrong.
Cindar knew what Black Silence was better than almost every living creature in this world.
The Calamity did not leave food behind, not because of mercy, not because of morals, not even because of boredom, there was no way the Calamity he knew would leave something alive.
Life was power, death was power, and every weak creature that stood before it without defense was food that there was no reason to ignore.
But now there were four living creatures around it, and the Calamity was leaving them behind.
Cindar said nothing, the undead had basically not spoken since their return.
But the absolute satisfaction in the Founder’s eyes was mixed with a small amount of doubt.
Black Silence did not care, it looked toward the Giant’s Graveyard and a sound came from its throat, it was Lian’s voice, but the tone had nothing similar to him.
Cold, empty and without any emotion.
"Let’s go."
The four undead immediately moved, Cindar also joined them after a short pause.
Two of them stood on both sides of Lian’s body and mana began to form under their feet. One grabbed Lian’s arm and the other lifted his body with mana.
Lian could not fly by himself, but it did not matter and a few seconds later, six figures left the ground.
His purple eyes remained fixed in one direction until the last moment.
The Giant’s Graveyard.
And then everyone moved away from above the Forgotten Tree.
Time passed.
One hour.
Then two hours.
And then more.
None of the bodies left beside the tree moved, the Forgotten Tree was also no longer dying.
It had finally died.
Its last life force had been consumed during the birth of Black Silence and now not even the weakest flow of mana remained in its huge roots.
The branches that once reached kilometers above the ground fell one after another and every fall shook the ground.
The wood broke apart after hitting the ground and some parts of it turned directly into ash.
The roots underground dried up and the springs that had been fed by the root network for centuries slowly became weaker.
The moisture left the soil, and the effect of the tree’s death did not remain limited to this field.
Three forests were connected to it, the flow of water, mana and a large part of the cycle of life were all connected to it.
The death of the tree was like cutting the heart of a huge creature whose veins were spread across this entire world.
The sky also changed and a dark red and sick-looking color slowly spread between the clouds, then it became stronger, until the sky was almost the color of blood.
It was as if the world itself had understood that the Calamity that had been suppressed for years had been released again, the corruption had returned to the world and was quickly spreading everywhere.
Several hours later, Selina’s finger moved.
At first only a little and then her eyelids moved again, and finally her eyes opened.
The first thing she saw was the red sky, she only stared at it for several seconds, nothing matched the last memory she had.
Her head was heavy, her body felt strangely weak and there were still faint signs of pain and burning on parts of her skin.
Selina slowly tried to sit up but the dizziness made her put her hand on the ground.
"Where...?"
The last thing she remembered was the rift, entering the Special Area, a strong light that covered her entire vision for a moment and then appearing in front of a tree.
A tree so huge that even from close by she could not see its highest branches.
And then? Nothing, her consciousness had stopped right there.
"How long...?" She put her hand on her forehead.
Then she looked around, and the words stopped in her mouth.
First she saw the girl, a blood-covered body was lying beside one of the roots.
Half of her face was almost covered with dried blood. One of her eyes was in a terrible condition, her wrist was at an unnatural angle and her clothes were burned and torn in several places.
A few meters away, a giant ant was lying on the ground.
For a moment, Selina was not even sure if it was dead or not.
Its body armor was broken in several places and there were two large wounds on its side and stomach.
Then she saw a middle-aged man, without two arms, both of his arms were cut off above the elbows.
Selina looked at the scene in silence for several seconds.
"Where the hell did I end up?"
