The Emergency Beacon was an artifact Lian had bought from the black market, and before entering the Special Area, he had given one to each member of his group.

But except for Liana and Seraphina, none of the others had used this thing until now.

Selina placed her finger on the center of the device, mana entered it and light gathered inside it for a moment.

Then a bright pillar shot straight into the sky.

The light opened several hundred meters above them and spread like a huge crown, covering the entire sky around Vhalaris.

The Cindari’s reaction was immediate, swords were drawn, bows were raised and mana gathered in the hands of the mages.

"It’s a war signal!" the commander shouted.

Selina looked at these idiots, had they really taken this thing as a war signal? Of course, they were somewhat right.

If she were in their place, she probably would have reacted the same way.

One of the mages stepped forward, Seris fully raised her guard, the space was only one step away from an explosion.

Then a voice came from far away.

"Wait!" Several people turned around.

Rindo was approaching from the inner positions of the city, almost at the same time, Tavern came out from among the Cindari ranks.

The lower-ranking commanders immediately stepped back.

"It’s him." Selina let out a relieved breath when she saw Rindo and whispered, Seris really had not lied.

Rindo first saw Selina, his steps slowed.

Then Seris.

Aren.

And finally One.

For several moments, he said nothing, the four people standing in front of him did not look like a group that had returned from a difficult mission.

They looked more like people who had been taken by death and then returned for some reason.

One of Seris’s eyes was gone.

Aren had no arms.

One was barely standing on his feet.

And Selina was the only one who looked relatively healthy...but when the group had left this place, this girl had not been with them, so where had they found her?

And one person was missing.

Rindo looked around them once more, behind Seris, behind Selina and even between the trees ...there was no one.

A cold feeling formed in his stomach, where was Lian?

"Are these your people?" Tavern looked closely at the group, then asked him.

"Yeah." Rindo paused for a few seconds.

Tavern’s eyes stayed on Aren without arms, then on One.

"All of them?"

"Yeah, let them in." Rindo stepped forward.

Tavern’s frown became deeper, it was clear that he did not want to let an unknown armed group pass through the blockade without checking them.

But then he raised his hand.

"Open the way."

The soldiers moved aside unwillingly.

Seris did not lower her sword until they had actually passed through the first ring of forces.

When Rindo also moved with them, Tavern’s voice came from behind him.

"Don’t forget our deal."

"I won’t forget." the Student Council President said calmly.

The young Pendragon gave him a short look, but did not ask anything, and as soon as they moved away from the main lines, Rindo said in a low voice.

"For now, don’t say anything, not here." And not long after that, they entered Ashfall, or at least what was left of it.

Then he called several nearby Awakened.

"Take him directly to the infirmary." He pointed at the ant.

Three people carefully stepped forward.

"Be careful, if anything happens to him, I’ll kill you." Seris immediately said.

One of them looked at her remaining eye, her tone made it clear that no further explanation was needed and they barely swallowed.

To move One, they used a wide board and several reinforced ropes and carefully lifted the giant ant.

One could not even protest, his antenna moved toward Seris only once.

"Go." Seris moved her head very slightly.

Aren, Seris and Selina entered the central part of Ashfall with Rindo, what remained of the area was very different from before.

The walls were broken, parts of the streets were buried under rubble, many buildings had burn marks and marks from the roots.

But the Humans were still there, one of the few buildings that was almost undamaged had been turned into the main base.

As soon as they entered, Aren could no longer continue, he sat down beside a wall and then almost let himself fall onto the ground.

"I just... five minutes..." His head rested against the wall, he closed his eyes and said nothing else..

"Did he fall asleep?" Selina looked at him with concern.

"If he’s lucky." Seris answered.

It did not take more than a few minutes before the sound of many footsteps came from outside.

Marcus entered first, then Ethan, Cassian, Liana and finally Seraphina.

Liana’s eyes first fell on Seris, her frown became deeper when she saw her condition, but the moment she turned her head, her entire face froze.

Selina was standing in front of her.

For several seconds, neither of them said anything, she seemed unable to believe what she was seeing.

"Selina...?"

"Liana." Selina gave a very small smile.

Liana’s expression changed at once, shock was replaced by excitement and she ran forward without thinking.

Selina did not even have time to open her arms before Liana hugged her tightly.

"You’re alive!"

The hug was so strong that Selina almost lost her balance for a moment.

"Yeah... apparently."

After a few seconds, she also wrapped her arms around Liana and the small smile on her face was real.

"You’ll have time to catch up later." But Rindo did not let the scene continue any longer.

Liana reluctantly stepped back and the Student Council President stood in the middle of the room, his eyes moving from one person to another.

"Now someone tell me what happened, what happened to you, and where is Lian?"

Seraphina had said almost nothing since entering, but when she heard Lian’s name, all her attention fixed on Seris.

The young Pendragon stayed silent for a few seconds, then, just as she had explained to Selina before, she went straight to the main point.

"Selina was chosen as the host of the Black Silence, Lian got her out of the cocoon, then he took her place, the disaster was born and took Lian’s body, and then it left."

Absolute silence filled the room for several seconds.

Rindo blinked several times and then raised one hand.

"Wait." He carefully started putting the sentences together again.

"Selina was going to become the host of the Black Silence."

Seris nodded.

"Lian took her place."

"Yeah."

"Now the Black Silence is inside Lian’s body."

"Yeah."

"And... it was born too?" Rindo’s frown became deeper.

"Yeah."

The entire room became silent, the amount of information they had learned from those few sentences was so much that understanding it all in a few moments was impossible.

Ethan gave a nervous smile for a moment, but it disappeared very quickly.

Because the meaning of Seris’s words was only now starting to fully sink into everyone’s minds.

"So... what do we do now?" Liana slowly moved away from Selina.

No one answered, how were they supposed to fight a disaster? Especially a disaster that had taken Lian’s body?

Seraphina suddenly moved and before anyone could react, she grabbed Seris by the collar and roughly pulled her one step forward.

"How did you let him do this?"

Everyone turned and looked in shock.

"How could you let him sacrifice himself?!"

Seris’s remaining eye narrowed and Seraphina tightened her grip on her collar.

"Damn it, then why did you go with him?!"

"Shut up." Seris raised her healthy hand and forcefully pushed her arm away.

"And what if I don’t?" Seraphina stepped forward.

The atmosphere in the room suddenly became cold, from Seris’s gaze, despite her injuries and exhaustion, something very dangerous appeared in her only remaining eye.

Even a weak trace of killing intent.

"Alright..." Marcus let out a breath.

"Enough." Rindo quickly stepped between them.

Both of them looked at him.

"Now is not the time for this bullshit, if you want to kill each other, at least let us first find out where the thing that is going to kill all of us is and what exactly we should do about it."

Seraphina pressed her teeth together, but stepped back.

"Isn’t it obvious? We find the disaster, and destroy it." Seris did not take her eyes off her, then said simply.

"The disaster is inside Lian’s body right now." Seraphina immediately replied, her voice was lower this time but there was more anger in it.

"That means if you want to destroy the disaster, you have to destroy Lian too, and we are not doing that, so shut up." Her eyes became cold.

Seris took one step forward and the distance between them became small again.

"If Lian can be saved, we’ll save him." She paused for a moment and then said something that made the room even colder.

"If he can’t... he will just be one of the casualties of this war."

Seraphina’s expression changed, this time her anger went out of control, she went straight toward her.

"We will not hurt him under any circumstances!"

The young Pendragon stood in front of her, there was no retreat in her eyes.

"Then choose, Lian or the world, if we can only save one, which one will you choose?"

Silence filled the room for several seconds, Seraphina opened her mouth, but no answer came out, she pressed her teeth together and closed her fist.

"Seraphina." Rindo said in a low voice.

She turned toward him and this time there was no anger in his voice, and maybe that made it worse.

"Seris is right."

For a moment, Seraphina’s eyes looked truly hurt and the Student Council President continued.

"If the choice really is between one person and the whole world... the choice is clear."

Seraphina gave him a very cold look, she said nothing, but there was no sign that she accepted his words.

In that silence, a short laugh came from somewhere, everyone turned around, Aren was still sitting beside the wall, his eyes were half-open and his laugh sounded more like a tired breath.

"The main problem is not your decision, do you really think you have the power to kill Lian?"
