Leon looked around hastily. He was back in his classroom. ’I was transported back to my classroom? What happened with the test?’ He wondered. He tried to understand, but his memories started to get a little haIt was as. As if all of it was in a dream.
"Look at you. Only a month is left before the final exam. And what do you do? Sleep, sleep, and sleep!" The teacher snapped.
But Leon didn’t bother with it. He tried hard to remember what he was forgetting, but his memories slowly slipped away, or at least his recent memories.
He heard the students bursting into laughter.
The teacher resumed his class. All the words echoed in his mind as if he had already heard them once before. He felt a headache spreading as he clutched his head.
Time ticked by. And soon, all the classes were over. Students started leaving the class one after another. Many threw a mocking look at Leon while passing by.
"Hey Leon." Suddenly, a familiar voice called out. "Were you having those weird dreams again? You are looking miserable."
"I think I was having a dream just now. But which dream are you talking about?"
"You don’t remember? You said something like being haunted by a giant centipede. Does it ring a bell?"
Leon shook his head. "Nope."
"Then that’s better. You are doing worse in your exams lately. You should focus on your studies. Let’s go. We will play some video games to lighten your mood first." Henry said.
"Nah. I am not feeling well today. See you tomorrow."
"Uhh okay." Henry nodded and then said goodbye to Leon.
Leon walked out of the college and started heading toward his home. He still tried to remember what he was forgetting but couldn’t. Releasing a helpless sigh, he continued walking.
After reaching home, Leon did some workouts. But he performed miserably. Frustrated, he stopped what he was doing and took a shower.
Just when he came out, there was a knock on the door. "Leon, are you home? Don’t tell me you have fallen asleep already." A voice came from the opposite side of the door.
Leon walked toward it and opened the door. "No, I was just taking a shower."
"Lunch is ready. Come eat it first." With that, Jenny left.
Leon nodded and then went outside after changing his clothes.
The siblings sat at the table and started eating.
"How are your studies going?" Leon asked while eating.
"Good," Jenny replied shortly.
"Do you need anything at the moment?" Leon asked again.
"No, I am good," Jenny said.
Leon felt a pang of guilt. He knew Jenny needed many things but wouldn’t ask, considering their economic condition at the moment. They ate their meal in silence after that.
Leon totally forgot that he was inside a test. He even forgot that he was having those weird dreams during this time before he bonded with the system.
His days started to pass in a usual routine. Going to college and being mocked by others. Doing two part-time jobs. And admiring hunters who could fight for others’ safety.
One day, he was about to walk home as usual when Henry called him out.
"Hey bro, let’s go to a cafe today."
"I don’t have money," Leon said and continued walking toward his home.
"Consider it a treat. Friends should help each other."
"But I have no way to help you back."
"Nuts. What are we? Dealers doing business? Let’s go." He almost dragged Leon toward a cafe.
They sat inside, and Henry ordered a bunch of food.
"What do you plan on doing after the finals?" Henry asked.
"I will try to find a permanent job so I can get a better salary. Jenny will soon go to college. I need to prepare so she won’t have any problem with fees and tuition. What about you?"
"I think I am going to be a hunter. Before that, I am about to participate in the military training camp test."
"Wow, that’s cool. I wish I had some abilities as well. Earning money would have been easy then."
"Yeah, and we could go to raids together," Henry said heartily.
"But don’t be so demoralized. Everything will be fine soon. Your mom will wake up as well." Henry tried to console Leon.
"Yeah, thanks, buddy. I hope she does."
Henry nodded. "And if you are ever in need of money, don’t hesitate to ask."
"Nope. I already owe you a lot."
"You can return it when you are rich," Henry said jokingly.
"Like that day is ever going to come," Leon said with a helpless smile.
"It sure will. Just keep working hard. And if possible, try to do good in the finals a bit."
"Yeah, I w....." Leon couldn’t finish.
Boooooom!
A loud bang echoed outside. Chaos descended instantly as people started running left and right.
"Monsters! Monsters!" Someone screamed.
"A gate has appeared suddenly, and monsters are coming out... Someone inform the Hunter Association immediately." Another person shouted.
Some were trying to go outside while some were rushing inside.
Amidst the chaos...
Boooom!
Another loud bang echoed as a monster entered the cafe Leon and Henry were in.
The monster wasted no time and immediately started massacring. It slashed its claws at one woman, killing her in one strike.
One person tried to run, but those same bloody claws pierced through his chest, bursting out from the back as his body left the ground, rising high in the air.
Another monster entered the cafe and walked toward a kid whose parents were not nearby.
"Leon, let’s run. Or we will die." Henry grabbed Leon’s wrist and was about to flee.
"But that kid." Leon stopped.
Henry turned and looked at the kid who was about to be attacked.
"Hurry up." Henry started running toward the kid. Leon also hurried behind so that both could leave the cafe together after saving the kid.
But before he could...
Schlk!
The monster had changed its target. And the new one was none other than Henry himself.
Blood gushed out from a bloody wound on his chest.
