Snow and Leon soon arrived before a metal gate, the boundary stretching on both sides for hundreds of meters. In front of the gate, a stony statue stood proudly. On one hand, it was holding a great sword, while on the other, a shield.
"We are here," Snow said as she hit the brakes. The car screeched to a halt before the military gate.
Two people were standing guard on both sides of the gate. They were wearing military-grade combat attire. The person on the left had two swords sheathed on his back in a cross, while the person on the right had a bow and arrows.
The person on the left marched toward Snow’s car. "This is a restricted area for civilians. State your purpose." The person with the sword said firmly. His face, his pose, everything spoke of experience hardened through battle.
"I am here for my uncle, Major Rodriguez Hermann."
"Let me check." The person walked back to his post and picked up a walkie-talkie. "Bravo for command post." He spoke into the walkie-talkie.
"Command post, send over."
"A civilian is asking to meet with Major Rudy. Please confirm if Major Rudy is expecting a guest."
"Hold on."
A few minutes passed as the walkie-talkie beeped again.
"Command post for bravo."
"Bravo, send over." The man with the sword replied.
"Let them in."
"Roger."
The man with the sword clicked a button, and the metallic gate slid open with a light rumble.
Snow drove the car inside. The man on the right watched everything. He brought out a phone carefully so the person on the left wouldn’t notice and typed a message. Then he forwarded it.
The way Snow drove her car forward, it seemed like she was very familiar with this place.
Soon they arrived before a one-story building which looked less like a living place and more like a fortress.
Click!
The car doors opened as Snow and Leon got down.
Snow walked forward as Leon followed. Stopping before the door, Snow pressed a button. Immediately, the door opened as a female who looked to be in her early thirties came out.
She hugged Snow tightly. "Snow, long time no see. How have you been?"
"I am fine, Daisy. Where is Uncle?" Snow asked with a smile.
"Well, he has been pacing back and forth from the moment he received your call. Said you were bringing a bazooka that will change my whole perception of what power is." She giggled.
"Hahahahah." Snow burst into laughter. "Just a bazooka? It’s more like a weapon that can fire nuclear bombs one after another."
"So..." Daisy’s eyes darted toward Leon. "Is it him?"
"Yeap."
Daisy’s eyes scanned Leon from head to toe. She could feel it. Leon was strong. But not to the point of comparing him to nuclear weapons.
"Let’s go inside." She welcomed them inside.
Leon and Snow followed Daisy inside.
Snow’s uncle really had been pacing back and forth. The moment his eyes landed on Leon, his face brightened.
"Leon, you are here. Come. Come sit." He said enthusiastically.
Leon and Snow walked forward and sat in chairs in front of a desk.
Snow’s uncle sat in the main chair behind the desk while Daisy stood behind him.
"I am Rodriguez Hermann. People call me Rudy. I am in charge of recruitment here. Well, I am not the only one, though. Snow first said you wanted to join the military training camp. But today she said you wanted to join the military. It’s good to know, but may I ask what changed your decision?"
"Well, the Hunter Association couldn’t assess my mana s...." Leon started, but Rudy cut him off.
"You are a cultivator then, right?"
"Yes."
"I see. But I don’t think you are from Summitas Valley, though, are you?"
"No."
"Then how did you cultivate without spiritual energy?"
Before Leon could answer, Snow spoke. "Uncle... He’s here for your interrogation. Just let him join already."
"Okay, okay." Rudy raised his hands in surrender. "I was just curious. That’s all. But consider you are in. You will start as a soldier. Soldiers are all F-rank. You will have to participate in three missions. Based on your performance, you will get a military license and also a rank. If in the future you want to leave the military, you can use that same license to register yourself as a hunter. The rank will continue. I hope I could make myself clear." Rudy said.
"When will be the first mission?"
"There are four companies here. I am one of the company commanders. For our company, we have separate missions in the next week. This week, all the missions are combined. So you can participate in the next week."
"Next week? I can’t participate in the combined ones?"
"You can. But things are a bit messy here, you know. Though we are all supposed to serve the nation, there is a sick competition. And it’s not just in our country. It’s happening all over the world. Normally, company commanders are responsible for recruiting. So based on each company’s performance, the commanders are given trace marks. These trace marks are needed for future promotion. Up to the rank of major, promotions are based on performance. Like how many missions you could complete, how many monsters, and what type of monsters you could kill. But later on, promotion is based on one’s leadership capability and contribution to the military. As a result, many people engage in fierce competition to get ahead of others. Not all, though. But those who do often target stronger candidates from other companies and harm them. Like forcing them into traps inside a dungeon. Don’t help them when they are in need. Sometimes, some even go to the lengths of killing someone. But as it happens inside a dungeon, no one can know."
"What? How can people become so cruel? What’s the difference between them and monsters then?" Leon asked in bewilderment.
"There isn’t. And I think they are even worse than monsters. Because while fighting monsters, you know you have to fight. But against humans, you can’t even know who you need to be careful around."
