Next morning, at seven...
A woman in her early thirties was standing before twenty-five people. She was in military-grade combat attire.
"Okay, everyone. The first test will be duels. You all will fight against Sergeant Dsilva. If you can win, you continue. If you fail, you are out. Am I clear?"
"Yes." The twenty-five people in front of her replied in unison.
She stepped back then. One person with a warhammer who was standing behind her came forward.
The person standing at the front among the twenty-five people came forward. A woman. In her early twenties. She was carrying a sword. Her figure was slender but firm.
"You can come at me on my count to three." Sergeant Dsilva said.
The candidate with the sword nodded.
"One...
Two...
Three..."
Whoooosh!
The girl shot forward, her blade whistling through the air. Closing the distance, her blade flashed in a wide arc.
The examiner blocked it with the warhammer’s handle.
Clang!
Dsilva’s hand shot out. The girl reacted quickly, dodging the punch. She ducked lower and swung the blade again. But the examiner flipped in the air, swinging the warhammer in a downward slash.
Thud!
The hammerhead struck her. The next moment, she was sent flying.
"Fail." The woman from earlier said. She crossed a name off her list and asked the next participant to step forward. More and more people came forward and fought against Dsilva. Some won and stood in another line. While others lost and left with a gloomy face.
On the seventeenth serial, a tall man with brunette hair came forward. His light blue eyes sparkled under the chamber light.
The moment Dsilva said three, a sword tip was pressed against his throat, the man with brunette hair standing before him with a calm expression.
"Pass." The woman responsible for conducting the recruitment test said.
The man with brunette hair walked toward the next line of candidates who had passed. There, a person was looking toward him. More like waiting for him. The moment the man with brunette hair reached there, he spoke. "That was cold, sis."
The man with brunette hair smacked him on the head. "Call me Nolan."
"Ouch..." The person groaned in pain. "You didn’t have to hit that hard."
"If I didn’t, you would blow this up before everyone. So be careful, Nadeem."
"Yes, Nolan."
Soon the first test was over. And out of twenty-five, only nine remained.
The woman in military attire then guided these nine to a separate room.
"Now, the second test. Hunting monsters. You all will enter this gate."
She pointed toward a gate beside her. "Inside, only F-Class monsters are there. For killing each monster, you will get ten points. Anyone crossing one hundred points within five minutes can pass."
Soon, the second test started.
The first one entering the gate could earn one hundred and seventy points. Everything happening inside could be seen on the screen beside the gate.
This was a permanent gate. So the military had taken control of it to use it as a testing ground.
Soon, one after another, the candidates appeared for the second test. Finally, only the one with brunette hair was left. Nolan.
Nadeem had scored six hundred and twenty points, the second-highest score till now.
Then Nolan entered the gate.
Ten points!
Twenty points!
Fifty!
One hundred!
In just two minutes, his score crossed a thousand. Every mouth hung open except Nadeem’s.
By the end, Nolan had scored two thousand and seventy points.
Even the woman in uniform looked shocked beyond words.
After some time, she finally snapped out of her daze and took the remaining five candidates to a different chamber for the next test.
"Today’s quota is only four. So one of you won’t be able to join the military. This last test will be a battle royale. You all will fight at once."
With her countdown, the next test started.
Meanwhile, a middle-aged man was going through some documents at his desk when someone rushed inside.
"Major, we have great candidates today. Though Major Cynthia is the recruiting commander today, if you don’t snatch a candidate named Nolan, you will definitely lose to her company in all the missions in the future for sure."
The middle-aged man raised his eyes. "What’s so great about him? Yesterday I recruited three candidates, and all of them are B-Class knights."
"Major, in the second test, this Nolan scored more than two thousand points."
Screech!
Bam!
The middle-aged man shot up abruptly from his chair. "Two thousand? Are you sure?"
"Yes, Major."
"Then he’s definitely an S-Class. Let’s go there. Hurry up."
He quickly left with the young man.
Back at the testing ground, the third test finally ended, and four people remained.
Nolan, Nadeem, a girl with fire affinity, and a young man with lightning affinity.
The woman in charge, Major Cynthia, looked gleeful. ’Now I am going to see how those three brutes can gain more trace marks than me.’ She mused while looking at Nolan. But before her ecstasy could last long, two people rushed in. One was the one who had instructed two people to take care of someone in today’s mission. While the other one was from just a moment ago, the one who was checking some documents.
"He is joining my company." Both of them said at once.
Major Cynthia glared at them. "What’s the meaning of this? I am the recruiting commander today. So I get to keep them in my company."
"That’s the rule, yes. But I won the last championship in the inter-unit tournament. And the Colonel promised me a candidate of my own choice from any recruiting day." The one who had instructed two people to take care of someone spoke.
"Dream on, Albert. I am not giving anyone. You can complain to the Colonel."
"What about me? I helped you once and saved three of your members from a crisis inside a dungeon. You said you owe me one favor. I want that favor now." The other commander said.
"You can forget about stealing one candidate from my company, too, Drake. You can ask for any other favor but not this, not today."
A pin-drop silence spread, but a chill went down everyone’s spine.
