"Here is your food." Suddenly, one of the waiters placed a platter before Leon and slid it. Without waiting for a reply, the waiter moved to the next table.

Leon saw his body moving on its own. His left hand rose as two fingers caught the cigarette. With his right hand, he picked a portion of meat and started munching on it.

Suddenly, the door to the tavern burst open. Six men entered. One had both arms chopped off. A bloody hole in his chest. Face swollen, with multiple teeth missing. The other five looked strong. The aura they radiated was overwhelming.

Everyone stopped what they were doing. A silence fell.

The injured person scanned the whole room before his eyes stopped on Leon. "There." He spoke, his broken voice echoing. "That’s the bastard who killed all of our brothers." The injured person pointed toward Leon and said.

The other five snapped toward Leon, killing intent gushing out from their bodies.

Those five started walking toward Leon. Everyone in the path cleared the way.

"Damn it. The tavern is going to be razed to nothing today." One of the customers murmured.

"Yes. Talk about bad luck. Who’s that young man? And why did he have to mess with the members of the Black Eagle clan out of all people?" Another shook his head with sympathy and said.

"He’s going to die now for what he did. But he is going to implicate the tavern as well."

Meanwhile, before those five could reach Leon, the monster now in human form stood up. "You guys should leave the tavern. Don’t bring your fight here." He faced those five and said.

The one walking at the leftmost of those five turned toward him and threw a punch. "Scram." He spat.

But the fist couldn’t reach its target. It was halted midway by a firm grip. The person from the Black Eagle clan tried to yank his hand free but failed. The grip felt like a metal shackle.

And then...

Baaam!

The monster threw a punch, sending the Black Eagle man flying through the tavern door.

The other four stopped and turned toward the monster now. "Do you have a death wish?" The person who looked like the leader barked.

"Javed. Teach him some manners." The leader spoke.

Immediately, another person from the group shot toward the monster, only to be sent flying by a brutal kick.

"Damn! Mr. Mercer is ruthless. But what’s the princess’s personal guard doing here?" A person whispered.

"Who knows? But that young man should consider himself lucky. If not for Mr. Mercer, he would be dead by now." Another added while carefully clutching a bottle of wine to his chest.

The leader of the five looked at the demon or Mercer coldly. "Do you even know whom you are messing with?"

Mercer folded his arms over his chest. "Would knowing who you are make my punches any softer? I told you not to make a scene here. And five people trying to bully a single person? You guys are definitely not on the right side. I hate troublemakers."

"You!" The leader trembled with anger. He waved his hand, signaling the remaining two beside him to attack at once.

One of them brandished a sword and lunged at Mercer. The other one’s palms glowed with a faint blue color as he shot forward.

The leader joined the fray as well.

Mercer acted like these men were nothing but ants. He grabbed the sword bare-handed and threw a punch.

The one with the sword flew back, slammed into the one with glowing palms, and then both were sent flying.

The leader stopped in his tracks abruptly before gritting his teeth and lunging at Mercer anyway.

Mercer jumped and spun in the air. A flying kick landed on the leader’s chest, sending him flying as well.

"Ahhhhhh."

"Ahhhh."

Wailing sounds echoed.

Mercer slowly walked toward the leader. "So? Do you still want to throw your weight around? I can play with you as long as you want."

"You have made the biggest mistake of your life. Maybe we aren’t your match. But once our clan elders hear about this, I would like to see how long you can stay arrogant."

"Is that so? Then go and tell your clan Master that I, Hendrick Mercer, will be waiting for you guys."

The leader suddenly froze. "Wait! What did you say your name was?"

Mercer didn’t reply and crouched down beside him instead. "You didn’t hear wrong. Scram before I stop feeling so generous as to let you all walk out alive."

The leader quickly got on his feet, helped the others, and ran outside with their tails tucked between their legs.

Mercer then slowly walked toward Leon’s table and sat down.

He took a sip from the gourd of wine before him.

Leon didn’t say anything and continued to eat his food.

Mercer’s eyes narrowed at that. "You! Don’t you think you should at least say ’Thank you’ to me?"

"Hmmm?" Leon heard the body he was inside finally saying something. "What for?"

"What for?" Mercer repeated in surprise. "Because I just saved your ass."

"But wasn’t I sitting here the whole time? Safe and sound?"

"You think if I didn’t stop them, you could still sit so casually?"

Leon placed the portion of meat he was eating and looked at Mercer.

"Why do you think they were after me?" Instead of replying, Leon asked a question.

"Because you messed with them?"

"Yet I still could come here and sit as if nothing happened."

Mercer was taken aback by those words. He looked at Leon carefully this time.

"What do you do?" Mercer asked.

"Nothing important."

"I want specifics."

"Nothing."

"Then how about I give you a job? Are you willing to take it?"

"Not interested," Leon said flatly.

"You didn’t even ask what type of job it is."

"Knowing about it wouldn’t change my decision."

"What if I force you into taking this?" Mercer said, his eyes becoming serious now.

"You can try."
