"Yes, Your Highness," Mercer said with utmost respect while bowing his head slightly.
"And this is?" The princess asked, looking at Logan.
"You asked me to find men who can fight and aren’t afraid of social status," Mercer replied.
"And you think he is like that?"
"Yes, Your Highness."
"Alright. Let’s go to my room." The princess said as she turned and started climbing the stairs.
Without any words, Mercer followed before looking at Logan as if silently ordering him to follow as well. Logan had no reason to disobey.
Soon the three reached the princess’s room. Princess Lilith pushed open the door and entered. Mercer and Logan followed behind her.
"Mr. Mercer, please tell me about the update."
Logan’s eyes narrowed. Lilith was the princess, and Mercer was her bodyguard. Yet right after entering the room, the balance totally shifted. It now looked as if Mercer was the superior one.
Mercer didn’t even ask for permission and sat down on a sofa. "The situation isn’t looking good. Your elder uncle is really trying to overthrow the throne. He’s even colluding with the Dragon tribe and the Orc tribe from Nexar."
"What?" Princess Lilith’s expression darkened.
"Yes. That’s not all. With our current strength, we won’t stand a chance against them."
"Is it that serious? I don’t think anyone can do that much damage with you present here."
Mercer exhaled a sigh. "You don’t understand. I am alone. And they are planning to bring thousands of dragons and orcs."
Lilith slumped onto a sofa as well. "What should we do then?"
Mercer thought for a while before speaking. "We can ask the Navana Empire for help "
"Impossible! Mr. Mercer, you know what they will demand in return. No way I am going to marry that pathetic scumbag."
Mercer felt troubled. "I don’t like him either. But I can’t find any other solution at the moment."
A silence fell. Suddenly something clicked in Mercer’s mind. "There is another option to convince them without being forced to marry the Navanian prince."
Lilith’s eyes lit up. "Hurry up and tell me already, Mr. Mercer."
"Thunder Ghost," Mercer said in a serious tone.
At those two words, Lilith’s mood dampened again. "You want to offer that weapon so that they would agree to cooperate?"
Mercer nodded.
"But how can we even make that happen? No one in the entire history could even get close to that Thunder Valley. Much less bring out the bow from within."
Mercer fell silent again. Because he, too, had no solution to that problem.
Suddenly Logan spoke. "What type of place is this Thunder Valley?"
Mercer raised his head and looked at Logan. "It’s called the cursed ground in the seventh heaven. It’s a mountain region with a radius of almost one mile. The whole place is covered by dark clouds, with thunder raging for twenty-four hours a day, for the whole year. There wasn’t a single day when the thundering stopped in that place. There is a legend saying that a heavenly weapon rests at the center of that mountain region. A weapon that can change the fate of the whole heaven. Many people have tried to obtain that weapon throughout history. Many used artifacts to protect themselves from lightning. But not a single one could reach the weapon." He exhaled slowly. By the end, it sounded less like an explanation and more like Mercer reminding himself why the task was impossible.
Logan meanwhile thought for a while before speaking again. "If I can get you that weapon, what do I get in return?" His voice was calm, almost casual, but it landed like a thunderclap.
Both Mercer and Lilith snapped toward Logan. "What did you just say?" They both asked at once.
"That weapon. I can get it for you. But what will I get in return?"
Mercer and Lilith didn’t talk for a moment and stared at Logan as if they were looking at a fool. Then Mercer was the one to break the silence. "Don’t overestimate yourself, boy. Maybe you couldn’t grasp the danger I tried to explain."
"I could grasp the danger. You don’t have to believe me either. Just tell me what if I can get that bow for you."
"Anything you want," Lilith said hurriedly. Though what Logan said sounded totally ridiculous, she wanted to believe him and put her hopes on him. She was that desperate at the moment.
"Even the Sky Heart?" Logan asked. But the moment he did, a sharp silver edge pressed against his throat, and Lilith stood before him, holding the dagger. "Who are you?" She asked coldly. "Who sent you here?"
"Wait, wait." Mercer hurriedly got up. "I think he doesn’t have any ulterior motives."
Lilith looked at Mercer. "Are you sure, Mr. Mercer?"
"Almost."
Lilith looked back at Logan again before slowly pulling her hand back. "Why do you need the Sky Heart?"
"To revive someone."
"Whom?"
"My wife."
Lilith fell silent. ’Is he telling the truth?’ She wondered. ’With Mr. Mercer’s ability to detect lies when someone speaks, it should be true.’
"I am sorry to hear that. But suppose, by some miracle, you obtain the Thunder Ghost, and we give you the Sky Heart in exchange for that. Reviving someone isn’t that easy. Besides the Sky Heart, you will need many other ingredients."
"I know. But I just need two more to achieve my goal." Saying that, Logan raised his hand and held his palm open. A ring on Logan’s finger shimmered, and immediately, a pouch materialized in Logan’s palm. He opened the pouch and five objects emerged from within. The moment they did, the air thickened. The temperature dropped. A medical fragrance, along with a blood stench, spread through the whole room.
Both Mercer and Lilith stood up abruptly, their jaws almost hitting the ground.
"T-those are..." Lilith stammered.
Mercer’s eyes were also wide.
The shock was too much for both of them to digest.
Logan waved his hand as those five objects, along with the pouch, vanished.
’Who the hell did I bring?’ Mercer thought.
