Mercer’s eyes narrowed at Leon’s blunt words, but he didn’t get angry. Instead, he studied Leon. His composure, the confidence he carried, the coldness in his eyes.

"Why don’t you want a job if you are doing nothing?"

"How does that concern you?"

"I am looking for capable men. And if you managed to piss off the Black Eagle clan, then you are surely capable of something."

"I am definitely not capable of babysitting others."

Mercer froze at those words before bursting into laughter. "You know that I am the princess’s personal guard? And you think I babysit her? That’s all I do?"

Leon didn’t laugh, didn’t say anything.

Mercer stopped laughing and looked at Leon. He started speaking in a serious tone again. "You won’t have to babysit anyone. You just have to be ready to protect others when needed."

At those words, something twisted inside Leon. It was as if he had just tasted something gross.

"I am not capable of protecting anyone," Leon said slowly, his voice barely above a whisper.

"Then I misjudged you." Saying that, Mercer got up from the table and was ready to leave when Leon spoke again. "The Sky Heart."

Mercer froze in his place. He didn’t move, he didn’t turn around either.

"I am ready to do anything for the Sky Heart," Leon said.

Mercer turned toward him again. Without warning, his hand shot out. He grabbed Leon by the throat and lifted him off the ground.

The whole tavern froze. Everyone stopped what they were doing. Nobody dared to move, not even breathe.

Even when dealing with those five members from Black Eagle clan, Mercer didn’t look this worked up. But now, his brows were furrowed, black lines appearing on his forehead. "How do you know about the Sky Heart?" He whispered in Leon’s ear. He didn’t want others to hear about this.

"I somehow know. Don’t worry. I am no spy. I have no bad intentions either. And for the Sky Heart, I am even willing to be your slave." Leon said firmly.

At those words, something shifted inside Mercer. ’He doesn’t seem like a bad guy. Arrogant, yes. But definitely not bad.’ He mused inwardly.

"Why are you looking for the Sky Heart?" Mercer asked.

"I need to revive someone I lost." Leon’s shaky voice echoed in Mercer’s ears. Those words came in a low voice but sounded firm enough.

Mercer finally let go of Leon. "Don’t talk about it so openly. And I can’t promise you the Sky Heart myself. It’s not something within my power. But if you can serve well, maybe someday..." Mercer couldn’t finish.

"I agree," Leon said.

Mercer looked at Leon for a few moments before speaking again.

"What’s your name?"

"Logan."

’So, I am back inside my past self.’ Leon thought.

"I am Hendrick Mercer."

"Everyone knows around here."

"Those five from Black Eagle clan didn’t seem to know."

"If the brain doesn’t work properly, it can affect eyesight."

Mercer burst into laughter again. "You have a sharp tongue."

Leon didn’t reply.

"Finish your meal. We will move then."

The environment in the tavern became normal again.

Logan soon finished his meal, and after that, Mercer brought him to the royal palace.

After entering through the main gate, Leon was shocked to see what lay ahead. The estate was so huge that it seemed less like a palace and more like a small city.

The mansion in the distance was at least twenty meters tall. Its walls stretched on both sides beyond what Logan’s eyes could follow. Pillars stood like monuments, with symbols and drawings carved into each one of them. Two vast lakes flanked the road connecting the main gate of the estate to the main entrance of the mansion.

Logan followed behind Mercer on a horse.

Once they arrived before the mansion, they stopped and climbed down from the horses.

Attendants came and took the reins from Mercer and Logan.

Just as they were about to enter the mansion, a person emerged from within and almost bumped into Logan.

"Watch where you are going, imbecile." It was a young man who barked at Logan.

Leon didn’t reply and stared at him expressionlessly.

"What are you looking at?" The young man snapped and was about to backhand Logan when Mercer stood before him.

"He came with me, Your Highness. Please pardon the rudeness."

The young man finally looked at Mercer. "Hendrick! So you are back. What took you so long? You think just because you are my cousin’s personal guard, you aren’t bound by laws?" The young man snapped.

"I wouldn’t dare, Your Highness. But I was sent on a mission by Princess Lilith herself."

"You think using her name will always let you escape punishment?"

"Your Highness can talk with the Princess. I really was sent on a mission by the Princess."

"Enough!" The young man barked. "Who is this filth? Has he no manners? He was walking like he owns the place." He pointed toward Logan and said.

"He’s new here, Your Highness, and didn’t have the time to master all the etiquette. I will make sure he soon learns everything properly."

"Yeah. Make sure he does." The young man scoffed and left the place. He didn’t forget to glare at Logan before that.

"Who was that arrogant fool?" Logan finally spoke.

"Hushhhhhh! Don’t speak so loudly. He’s the firstborn of the king’s elder brother. Jeremiah Hale. He doesn’t like the princess because he believes his father should have been the king. As a result, he can’t tolerate anyone who is loyal to the Princess, and always finds ways to humiliate them. Forget about him. Let’s go inside."

Mercer guided Logan inside.

Just as they entered, a female voice echoed from the central stairs.

"Mercer, you’re back."

Logan instinctively looked above.

An elegant woman stood there in silver robes. Her brunette hair billowed in the air. Her face radiated a lively charm. She wasn’t wearing heavy jewelry or any makeup. Yet her presence made it feel as if Logan were standing before a goddess.

Logan wasn’t particularly captivated. In his eyes, Ariana was no less beautiful than the woman before him. Leon, however, froze inside his mind.

’Emily???????’
