Du Youqian’s plan was to gather the materials to craft a Demon-Hiding Vase, secretly forge one, and then carry the little monkey with him.
However, this was a huge risk. On the Holy Blood Sect’s orders, all the other sects had made arrangements to monitor the Marketplaces across the land, keeping records of anyone collecting materials for a Demon-Hiding Vase.
Besides, keeping the little monkey cooped up in a Demon-Hiding Vase for years on end would be unbearable for it.
But before he could gather all the materials, things took an unexpected turn.
It was all because of Xi Zhiheng, who was in a hurry to get to the Ten-Mile Sinking Sand Evil Pool.
And it just so happened that it was time for a rotation of Guardians at several locations, including the Ten-Mile Sinking Sand Evil Pool.
After some thought, Du Youqian made a proposal to Xi Zhiheng: Xi Zhiheng would have to choose to garrison a desolate, uninhabited post and then switch with him. In addition, Xi Zhiheng would have to compensate him with a large sum of Contribution Points.
Xi Zhiheng agreed without a moment’s hesitation.
And so, very quickly, Du Youqian redeemed a piece of Tier Five Huanxi Jade from the Sect and set off alone to garrison a Forbidden Land in the northern part of the Wei Kingdom.
Fang Hua and Luo Jinyu had wanted to accompany him, but he turned them down.
"Your most urgent priority right now is Core Formation. Whichever one of you finds your breakthrough opportunity first can borrow against my name in the Sect to redeem Core Formation Spiritual Objects and a Core Formation Secret Technique."
It was only in sects like the Taihe and Holy Blood Sects that Core Formation Spiritual Objects were almost always available for redemption.
In other sects, even Second-class Sects, it often took thirty or forty years to acquire a single Core Formation Spiritual Object, and there was no guarantee it would even be of high quality.
Third- and Fourth-class Sects might not be able to get their hands on one even after seventy or eighty years.
Take Shuyue Hua, the Sect Leader of the Hundred Flowers Sect. She wanted to attempt Core Formation decades ago, but she still hasn’t acquired a Core Formation Spiritual Object—not even the lowest-grade one. To this day, she is still waiting desperately.
On top of that, when Du Youqian had previously refined the Six Spirits Heart Nourishing Pills, he had managed to produce three in a single batch.
He used one for himself and had saved one for each of them, which would now come in handy.
After leaving the Holy Blood Sect, Du Youqian first made a detour to Soul-shaking Mountain in the Wu Kingdom to pick up the little monkey. Only then did he travel to the Hundred Poison Forbidden Land in the northern Wei Kingdom.
It was a valley where several types of Evil Qi clashed, filling the surrounding environment with a deadly poison that repelled all birds and beasts.
Only Core Formation Masters could garrison the area without being too severely affected.
But the reason someone had to stand guard here was because the place offered a tremendous benefit.
When the various types of Evil Qi clashed, they not only produced deadly poison but also, every so often, generated high-grade Core Formation Spiritual Objects.
All such prime locations were controlled by the Taihe and Holy Blood Sects, so naturally, the right to distribute the Core Formation Spiritual Objects belonged to them as well.
When he arrived, the place was desolate, without a soul in sight.
Unhurried, Du Youqian scanned the area with his Divine Sense and finally located a spot shrouded by an Array.
With his mastery of Arrays, a mere Tier Two Array like this was no obstacle for him; he could have passed right through it.
Nevertheless, Du Youqian revealed his identity medallion.
The Master on duty immediately came out to greet him.
Seeing Du Youqian, he was visibly stunned. "So it’s you, Master Yu... I never expected you to reach Core Formation so quickly."
’Garrisoning a place like this, one would naturally receive copies of the Sect’s major announcements. Who knows how out of touch this man was to not even know about my Core Formation,’ Du Youqian thought.
Du Youqian had seen this man at his own True Inheritor ceremony. He smiled and said, "Master Kuo Hai, it’s been a while. You look as distinguished as ever."
Master Kuo Hai was clearly puzzled. Why would a True Inheritance Core Formation Master like Du Youqian come to garrison this godforsaken place?
Guarding this toxic land was a truly thankless task with no perks to speak of. But as one of the Sect’s important resource points, it required a Core Formation Master to be stationed here.
Every Core Formation Master who came to garrison this place felt like they were being exiled, forced to just hold their noses and bear it.
Du Youqian offered no explanation and simply completed the handover with him swiftly.
Not wanting to pry, Master Kuo Hai finished the handover, boarded his Flying Boat, and fled as if his life depended on it.
Once he was gone, Du Youqian brought the little monkey out of his Flying Boat and gave it a series of instructions. "Wukong, don’t run too far, don’t let anyone see you, and don’t eat random things or you’ll get an upset stomach..."
The little monkey nodded repeatedly.
It was extremely intelligent; though it couldn’t speak yet, it understood human language.
If it ever encountered a word it didn’t understand, Du Youqian could simply convey the meaning with his Divine Sense, allowing it to grasp it instantly.
It just wasn’t very happy with the name "Wukong." It chattered and SQUEAKED at Du Youqian, wanting a different name.
"Little monkeys don’t get a vote. Your name is Wukong, and that’s final!" Du Youqian shut down the little monkey’s protest with a single sentence.
After finishing his instructions, Du Youqian let the little monkey out to play. He then returned to his simple cave residence and toyed with the Jade Scroll he had fashioned from the Tier Five Huanxi Jade.
’If even this Jade Scroll can’t contain the Sword Intent of that strike, I’m out of options,’ Du Youqian thought. ’After all, the Sect’s treasury doesn’t even have any Tier Six Jade.’
After toying with it for a moment, Du Youqian steeled his resolve.
He first sat in meditation, performing breathing exercises to regulate his body and mind. Then, holding the Jade Scroll in one hand, he summoned the spectral image of the Spring and Autumn Brush.
"Record!"
The Spring and Autumn Brush flared with brilliant light. A vast, ancient, and desolate aura descended, seemingly suppressing the very air around it until it dared not move.
At the same time, an immense suction force erupted from the brush, violently draining all of Du Youqian’s Magical Power.
Even though Du Youqian had been mentally prepared, he was still caught off guard.
He didn’t dare let go, lest all his effort go to waste. Making a split-second decision, he immediately took out a Spiritual Diamond he had pocketed while garrisoning the Desolate Abyss. It was just barely enough to keep him from being sucked dry.
The Spring and Autumn Brush trembled slightly, as if struggling to carve the inscription into the Jade Scroll.
Thankfully, it didn’t emit another "TING," and Du Youqian breathed a sigh of relief.
’Otherwise, if even this Tier Five Jade couldn’t withstand the recording... Losing an expensive piece of jade would be a minor issue; the real tragedy would be failing to record that world-shaking sword strike.’
’Besides, if I couldn’t record that sword strike, I wouldn’t be able to free up the brush to record anything new. Letting this mysterious Spring and Autumn Brush with its immeasurable power sit idle would be a colossal waste.’
After the time it takes an incense stick to burn, the Spring and Autumn Brush finally stopped trembling.
Du Youqian felt completely drained. He didn’t rush to probe the Jade Scroll with his Divine Sense. Instead, he put away the two depleted Spiritual Diamonds and immediately sat down to meditate and recover.
He meditated for several days. Only when his body had returned to its peak condition did Du Youqian take out the Jade Scroll and extend his Divine Sense into it.
A sky filled with the color of blood, and a single flash of sword light!
And then... nothing.
An unknown amount of time passed before Du Youqian slowly regained consciousness. His head was splitting as if from a terrible hangover, his mind was foggy, and his body was drenched in a clammy sweat.
These were the clear aftereffects of overexerting his Divine Sense.
At some point, the little monkey had run over and was now looking at him with concern.
Seeing Du Youqian awaken, the little monkey’s face lit up with joy. He had no idea when it had returned.
Du Youqian was horrified. ’That one glimpse, in a single instant, completely drained my Divine Sense!’
He glanced at the sky; he must have been unconscious for at least half a day.
’The Sword Intent of that single strike... it’s that powerful?’
’Just a single glance was enough to completely drain my Divine Sense!’
’But why didn’t I pass out that day when I witnessed the strike in person?’
"I’m fine. Go on and play."
After shooing the little monkey away, Du Youqian tried to recall what his Divine Sense had perceived within the Jade Scroll.
A sky filled with the color of blood, a single flash of sword light...
He could recall it.
Although he still couldn’t fully understand or comprehend it, he could at least recall the strike. And as he did, he felt as if he had grasped something, though the feeling was too ephemeral to describe.
It was a definite improvement compared to that day at the scene, when the memory of the strike had vanished completely from his mind moments after he saw it.
A flash of understanding dawned on Du Youqian.
’The reason I didn’t pass out that day at the scene, but fainted just now while trying to comprehend the strike... is because that day, I didn’t truly understand the strike at all. It was like trying to see flowers through a thick fog or the moon’s reflection on water. Because of that, I wasn’t too affected.’
’But just now, when I observed the strike through the Jade Scroll, the Spring and Autumn Brush had recorded its pure Sword Intent. It was as if the fog had been stripped away, presenting the core essence of the strike directly to me.’
’The sheer volume of information was too much for my current Realm to handle. I "overloaded" on the spot and fainted.’
’But at least now, I can begin to comprehend that sword strike.’
’Even if it means only perceiving a tiny detail each time, understanding a mere fraction, or appreciating just a hint of the strike’s magnificence.’
’Over time, I will eventually be able to fully comprehend this Sword Intent and absorb it as nourishment for my own Sword Dao.’
’The Spring and Autumn Brush... it truly is a divine artifact!’
’It just means I’ll have a major new expense from now on. I’ll need to be constantly on the lookout for high-quality jade to make more Tier Three, Tier Four, and Tier Five Jade Scrolls.’
’Only then can I record more profound Sword Intents, Divine Abilities, and Magic when the need arises.’
After meditating for a few more days, Du Youqian repeatedly replayed the few details he had managed to see. He felt he was on the verge of understanding something; if he just looked one more time, he was sure he would have a breakthrough.
So, he gripped the Jade Scroll, his face set in the grimly heroic expression of a man marching to his execution, and carefully extended his Divine Sense into it once more.
BOOM!
As if a peal of thunder had exploded right next to his ear, Du Youqian lost consciousness once again.
The little monkey, playing in the distance, seemed to share a telepathic link with him and came running over at once. Seeing Du Youqian’s eyes shut tight, it grew agitated, chattering "SQUEAK! SQUEAK! SQUEAK!" and flailing its limbs.
But after a moment, seeing that Du Youqian’s breathing was steady, it seemed to understand that there was no serious danger.
So, it found a few large leaves to cover him with and then went back to its play.
~~~~~~~~
Although life here was spartan, and the environment wasn’t suitable for meditation to advance one’s Cultivation, the place was remote and the scenery was unique (if you could call trees twisted and warped by poison gas "scenery"). It was, however, the perfect place to hone his Secret Techniques and comprehend Sword Intent.
Every few days, Du Youqian would probe the Jade Scroll with his Divine Sense.
At first, he could only last for a single instant each time, but he always managed to gain some small insight.
Over time, he was able to endure for longer and longer, until he could finally withstand viewing the sword strike in its entirety.
