A cycle: the death of one thing became the beginning of another.

A new fragment appeared.

[THIRD KNOWLEDGE]

[What dies does not necessarily end.

What is scattered may gather again.

What is consumed may become fuel.

What is lost may become the foundation of something new.

Nothing remains unchanged.

Nothing remains in one form forever.

What is the law beneath them all]

Dean stared at the words. He didn’t answer immediately.

The universe around him continued changing. Stars died. Stars were born. Galaxies collided.

Matter gathered. Matter scattered. Energy transformed.

Dean whispered.

"Transformation, isn’t it?"

Humphrey nodded. Dean looked at the three pieces. Energy. Potential. Transformation.

But something was missing. He looked at the door. Three symbols. Three empty spaces.

One final piece.

The third piece of knowledge dissolved into a glowing symbol.

[TRANSFORMATION]

It joined the other two.

Dean watched.

[POTENTIAL ENERGY]

[TRANSFORMATION]

The symbols moved; they connected. Dean’s eyes narrowed a tiny bit. He was wondering what was happening.

Potential energy transformed.

Stored energy became kinetic energy, matter became radiation, stars became elements, energy became matter, and matter became energy.

The universe itself was a continuous process of transformation.

Dean looked at Humphrey.

"So..."

Humphrey smiled.

Dean continued.

"The first puzzle gave me Energy," he said.

"The second gave me Potential Energy," he explained.

"The third gave me Transformation," and he added to his own words.

He looked around. It almost felt like he needed something else. There was no other piece, but an answer he needed to find from those pieces.

"But that still isn’t enough," he said.

Humphrey nodded.

Dean stared at the enormous door. There had to be a final connection.

A final answer was what he needed.

Something that tied all three pieces together.

He looked at the stars again. Counted the thoughts and answers he found before.

A supernova, a newborn galaxy, a dying star, a black hole, a planet.

Everything moved, everything changed, everything contained energy, and everything transformed energy.

And energy existed in different forms.

They all were real, alive, in front of his eyes.

Dean slowly smiled.

"Huh...This is literally a video game," he said suddenly.

Humphrey’s eyes narrowed.

"Now, what’s that, chap?" the frog asked.

Dean looked at the glowing pieces without caring about the thing Humphrey asked.

"Cosmic energy."

The moment he said it, everything stopped. Like literally. Everything, in that exact moment and second, stopped.

The stars, the galaxies, the supernovae and the falling fragments of energy.

Everything.

For one impossible moment, the universe became completely still.

Then the three pieces of knowledge flew toward one another.

[ENERGY]

[POTENTIAL ENERGY]

[TRANSFORMATION]

They collided.

A massive wave of light erupted. Dean raised his left arm to shield his eyes. It was incredibly bright.

The three pieces became one.

A single phrase appeared.

[COSMIC ENERGY]

Dean stared, and the enormous door began opening in that moment. It was almost like Dean needed to find the password for the door to open.

But before it fully opened, a final inscription appeared across its surface.

[Knowledge is not collected.

It is connected.]

Dean stared at the words.

Then slowly smiled.

"So that was the puzzle."

Humphrey finally spoke.

"Indeed," he said.

Dean looked at him and then said: "You barely said anything."

Humphrey smiled.

"As was required," he replied.

Dean looked back at the door.

For the first time, he understood what this examination had actually been testing.

It wasn’t asking him whether he knew what a star was or it wasn’t asking him whether he knew what energy was.

It wasn’t even asking him whether he understood the universe, and it had given him fragments.

Pieces of information.

And forced him to connect them.

[Potential, Energy, Transformation.]

The universe...The answer wasn’t hidden in a single piece.

It existed between them.

Dean took a slow breath. His broken rib still hurt, and his right arm still hung uselessly against his chest.

He was exhausted, but now he actually finished the dungeon instead of dying here. That was a point he was able to reach.

He didn’t even get help from Percival, and that said a lot about how much he grew not only as a person or a warrior but as a player.

But he felt something different now.

Not strength but understanding.

Humphrey walked beside him. Well...again, hopped.

The frog looked toward the opening door.

"Well done, my dear fellow."

Dean glanced at him.

"That’s it?" he asked. He knew there were only 4 puzzles...examinations, but to be exact, he still waited for something else.

Almost like Dean had no trust in this frog.

"For this examination," Humphrey said.

Dean smiled faintly.

"Good," he said. He legit finally thought he could leave and take a rest to get healed.

He took one careful step toward the door.

Then another.

He stopped halfway.

The universe behind him continued moving, and somewhere in that infinite darkness, new worlds were beginning to exist.

Dean looked back one final time.

Then he whispered:

"Cosmic Energy."

The door opened completely, a brilliant white light swallowed the corridor ahead.

Humphrey adjusted his hat.

"Shall we?"

Dean nodded.

"Yeah," he said.

Together, the injured man and the eccentric frog walked through the door.

And behind them, the universe continued its endless cycle.

Born, burning, dying, transforming.

Never truly ending.

/////

As soon as Dean stepped through the door, he found himself in a completely different place.

He realised he was in a mansion.

There were dozens of women around, dressed in maids’ uniforms... and he could see Angel.

They were all standing upright with their eyes closed and their hands held in front of them.

Humphrey had walked straight past Dean and, leaping once more, had looked closely at the young man.

"Come on then, you’ve finished the dungeon, and you did it the fastest. Someone wants to meet you."

When Humphrey spoke these words, Dean looked at him curiously and took a deep breath.

"All right," said Dean; although fatigue was getting the better of him, he still chose to press on.

Humphrey showed him the way, and within a short while they had reached a door.

The door swung open straight away.

Without waiting to see who was behind it, Humphrey tapped his cane on the floor once, and the door swung wide open.

The moment Dean stepped inside, he could see the stares directed at him by many people. There were more than a dozen angels to be seen. Each of them looked like servants.

There was also someone with pink hair sitting in an armchair, but Dean couldn’t quite make them out.

The armchair this person was sitting in was turned away from him.

When Dean looked in the direction that person was facing, his eyes widened in surprise.

It was just like those colosseum matches he’d watched with Nemesis.

"Oh... Just like when I watched things with Nemesis," Dean murmured.

As he spoke those words, the person behind the armchair spoke:

"You know our dear Lady Nemesis, do you?"

It was a high-pitched woman’s voice.

Dean replied curiously, "Yes, she’s actually a close friend of mine," and as he spoke, the chair spun round quickly.

Dean found himself thinking, "This isn’t a mafia film."

However, those thoughts were about to change in an instant.

Dean immediately turned his head to the right, using one hand to block his view of the left side.

"Ma’am, please put something on," Dean had muttered.

It was just like Nemesis would have done.

Apparently, the goddesses of Aether liked to walk about naked.

"Hmm... Sorry about that, dear," the woman said, before adding, "I am Aphrodite."

Dean, looking curious, said, "Aphrodite? Goddess of Beauty?"

"Mhm, that one," Aphrodite replied.

She was looking at Dean curiously.

Her gaze was quite gentle, yet her mind seemed rather distracted and preoccupied.

"Well, well, well... I watched you from here whilst you were solving the puzzles, but now that I look at you here, you’re quite a sight, aren’t you, darling?"

When Aphrodite spoke these words, Dean couldn’t say a thing and was still trying to stop himself from looking in that direction.

Nevertheless, the goddess sprang to her feet at once and took a few steps towards Dean.

Her long hair swept across the floor.

You could hear the sound of her bare feet on the white marble.

The light from the torches on the wall cast a shadow that seemed to draw ever closer to Dean.

Dean simply stood there, motionless.

"Now, tell me, my love. Does Lady Nemesis own you?" Aphrodite asked suddenly.

Dean, however, retorted, "Own me? Of course not. What am I, a slave?"

"That’s quite good, then. After all, if Lady Nemesis isn’t going to have a go at you, I’ll be the one to do it," Aphrodite had suddenly remarked.

She took a few more steps forward and, approaching Dean, touched his broken right arm from behind.

Dean instantly felt a warm energy in his arm, and the pain in it vanished.

Aphrodite then touched his broken rib, and the same thing happened there too.

"Now, for the next hour we shall talk, and then I’ll see whether I’ll have you in my chambers or not," said Aphrodite.

Dean could no longer contain himself:

"What the actual fuck?"
