"I’ll be back soon, you don’t have to miss me too much," Ethan told the vampire with a grin.
"Haha, I know, be careful on the road, leave things here to me." Walter chuckled, then summoned two Blood Jade Beasts in spider form and waved them off.
Ethan and Zharok waved goodbye, Zharok grabbed the handcart and squared his stance.
"Hold on tight, I’m going to speed up!"
"Roar!!"
With a furious roar, Zharok stretched his limbs and launched forward like an arrow from a bowstring.
The scenery blurred, wind howled past Ethan’s ears.
"Meow-ahhh! Slow down! Slow down! Ethan! Are you alright, meow?!" Pearl clung to Ethan’s clothes, fur standing on end.
"I’m fine." Ethan steadied the trembling cat.
The wind was fierce, but Ethan found it more thrilling than uncomfortable, what worried him was whether the handcart could survive Zharok’s pace, then again, if it fell apart, he could build another one.
"Monsters!"
They cleared a stretch of forest and burst onto a vast plain, a pack of monsters spotted them and charged, tiger shaped creatures, the same type they had run into before.
"Wait here, I’ll take care of them!" Zharok dropped the handcart and rushed the horde.
"If you run into trouble, call me," Ethan said.
"Haha, with you saying that, I feel completely at ease!"
Zharok flashed a grin, brandished his claws, and tore into the pack.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Every punch and swipe carried crushing force, the massive beasts toppled one after another, no match for him.
"Meow! Ethan! There are monsters behind us too!" Pearl jabbed a paw over Ethan’s shoulder.
He turned, a swarm of giant mantis-shaped creatures was bearing down on them, in an instant the Scythe of Gaia was in his hands, expanded to full combat size.
"Wrath of the Earth!"
Boom!!!
The ground heaved, thick stone pillars erupted from the earth and impaled every mantis in their path.
One move, and all dead.
Ethan glanced over at Zharok, he had finished off his side as well.
"Oh? Is that Wrath of the Earth? Impressive power!" Zharok called out, eyes wide.
"It is the power of Goddess Gaia, of course it’s formidable," Ethan said.
"Seems like if we run into danger, I can leave all the fighting to you," Zharok mused, rubbing his chin.
"Then your food portions get halved," Ethan said.
"Don’t be like that, my friend, I’m joking, I’ll fight hard." Zharok backpedaled at once.
Ethan and Pearl shared a look and smiled.
Zharok turned to the monster corpses and started rummaging.
"Found it!"
What he pulled out was a mana crystal — the source of a monster’s power and a prized alchemical material, he gathered every last crystal, and the corpses dissolved into wisps of black smoke.
"What’s going on?" Ethan asked.
"Once the mana crystal is extracted, the body turns to smoke and vanishes, so if you want to harvest monster parts, don’t take the crystal out first," Zharok explained.
"Fascinating, do the harvested materials disappear too?"
"No. I don’t know why, but they don’t." Zharok shrugged, picked up a crystal, and popped it into his mouth.
Crunch!
He bit down, then grimaced.
"Eating mana crystals replenishes mana, but the taste is awful, isn’t there some way to make them edible?" Zharok complained.
"How about marinating them in honey?" Ethan eyed the translucent crystals.
"Honey? Great idea!" Zharok’s eyes lit up, then dimmed.
"But where do we find honey?"
"I think I saw bees in the forest earlier, they should be nearby." Ethan sounded a bit uncertain. He hadn’t gone looking for hives before.
"Those bees... they wouldn’t happen to be Firebees, would they?" Pearl cut in.
"Firebees? The ones whose stings burn like fire?" Zharok asked.
Ethan recalled the beeswax in the Minotaur village warehouse, at the time, the Minotaurs had mentioned it came from a Firebee hive.
"That’s right, firebee honey is extremely dangerous, you need to be very careful harvesting it, meow," Pearl warned.
"That dangerous... then forget it." Zharok hesitated, delicious honey marinated crystals weren’t worth putting Ethan in danger.
"We can figure it out later, if nothing else works, we can try Honey Sweet Potato juice as a substitute," Ethan said, there were always more solutions than problems, and he never lacked the nerve to try.
"Alright, let’s get moving."
Over the next few days they ran into several more monster attacks, but handled them all without trouble.
At dusk, Zharok stopped.
"Let’s rest here for tonight."
They had reached the edge of a clear river — a good campsite. Ethan looked around, then released the Blood Jade Beast in its spider form.
"What are you doing?" Zharok asked.
"Going to catch some fish, I saw big ones in the river." Ethan pointed at the shimmering water.
"Good idea, I’ll go hunt some game."
"Can you still run?" Ethan looked him over, Zharok had been sprinting most of the day and fighting on top of it, his stamina had to be running low.
"Don’t worry, no problem at all!" Zharok waved a hand and vanished into the forest.
Ethan shook his head, then got a fire going with Pearl.
"I’m back!"
It wasn’t long before Zharok returned, a huge slab of raw meat in his grip, still dripping blood.
"What kind of meat is this?" Ethan asked.
"Sawtooth Deer," Zharok said proudly, and dropped it into the Cauldron of Blessing.
Ethan took the meat to the river and washed it clean, then sent the Blood Jade Spider to catch a fish as thick as his arm, more than enough for a hearty meal.
"By the way, I found some ruins in the forest just now," Zharok said.
"Ruins? Human ruins?"
Ethan’s interest sharpened at the word.
"Should be, I’ve never been out this way, so I didn’t know they were here either, let’s go check them out after we eat," Zharok proposed.
"Sure." Ethan agreed without hesitation.
Zharok loved exploring ruins, no reason to refuse.
"Haha, I knew you wouldn’t say no," Zharok said.
