Chapter 469: Chapter 468: Countering the Assassination
As Colin began Casting, he spoke to Dorn in his mind, ’Dorn, the Shaman among those Orcs is likely an expert assassin. You need to stay hidden and make sure that bastard doesn’t take me or Ale out.’
’Hmph. You two just focus on squawking and casting your spells. You have nothing to worry about.’
’And you just keep throwing those daggers with your stubby little hands.’
As he shot back the retort, Colin glanced to the side. Dorn, who had been standing right next to him, had vanished without a trace.
’How in the world does he just vanish right from under your nose...?’
As he thought this, Colin began his Spellcasting.
His Spellbook flew open, and a silvery-gray Magic Radiance bloomed between the pages.
But in that very instant, a curtain of blackness descended from above, shrouding their vision as if someone had draped a dark cloth over their heads.
His spell, halfway through its Casting, was interrupted by the loss of a visual target.
’The Orc Shaman has made his move, just as I expected,’ Colin thought.
Just like Yenogu the Poison Fang among the Jackal Wolfmen, certain Orcs particularly favored by Shag’gath become "Shag’gath’s Red Fangs."
These Orcs could cast *Darkness* and, with the blessing of their Gods, could see through any and all darkness.
Even against creatures with Darkvision, they could use their Divine Arts to sow chaos before brazenly launching a massacre right in the midst of their enemies.
These creatures were natural-born assassins.
’Will they attack directly? In a situation like this, they have to take out the two of us Casters if they want to guarantee a win,’ Colin thought.
In the complete darkness, Colin gently drew *Burning Blood*. He pressed his finger to the blade, drawing blood, and the sword immediately began to drain it from his body.
As he felt the warmth drain from his fingertip, Colin performed the Spellcasting for *Haste* on himself.
Throughout this process, he stayed close to Ale’s side, ensuring he could support her at any moment.
’Something’s coming! I’m having Orelia make her move!’
"Morninglord, may Your light descend and shatter this curse!"
Dorn’s voice echoed in his mind once more, immediately followed by Orelia’s prayer. The darkness that had just shrouded their vision instantly shattered.
The next instant, a black shadow descended from the sky.
’He jumped from the tree next to us!’
Colin didn’t even look. As he drew his blade, he instantly entered his Sword Dance state. The Damascus pattern on the blade turned a vivid red.
Enhance *Emerald Flame Sword*!
The moment he swung, the blade let out a piercing hum.
An arc of blood-red fire bloomed in mid-air. The Orc that had jumped down was sent flying, a gruesome wound stretching from its lower abdomen to its chest, its Leather Armor completely shredded.
In his peripheral vision, Colin caught sight of another shadow landing beside Ale.
A flash of silver, and Dorn’s figure appeared in mid-air.
Gripping his Dagger with both hands, he just barely blocked the enemy’s Scimitar. He then landed steadily on the ground with an almost unnatural agility.
Mog, standing nearby, simply reached out, grabbed the Shag’gath’s Red Fang, and slammed him to the ground.
An Ogre in Full Plate Armor versus an Orc Shaman specializing in assassination—the outcome was already obvious. Not to mention Orelia and Dorn, who had just blocked the attack, were also standing by.
’First, I’ll deal with this one over here.’
As he thought this, Colin and Ale began their Spellcasting.
A *Flaming Arrow*, a silvery-white *Frost Ray*, and an oaken arrow from Kase all struck the Shag’gath’s Red Fang that Colin had knocked away. The Orc was cut down on the spot before it even had a chance to get back up.
Immediately after, a crisp CRACK echoed from beside them.
Mog swung his arm, slinging an iron club dripping with a viscous red and white fluid over his shoulder. In front of him lay the corpse of an Orc with its head smashed in—the Shag’gath’s Red Fang that had just jumped from the tree had met a violent end.
Colin looked back at the distant Ettin. "Alright, time to get back to the main event."
As the two Ettins advanced, they reached into the pouches at their waists.
Then they pulled out their hands and swung them forcefully.
WHOOSH!
A strong gust of wind blew past.
This was followed by a loud BANG. Colin turned his head to see that two head-sized stone blocks had landed in an empty space nearby, smashing two small craters into the ground.
A silver Magic Radiance flickered between the pages of his spellbook.
Colin pointed.
A ball of white webbing exploded directly in front of the two Ettins, and the Orcs crowded before them were instantly enveloped by the white webs.
At the same time, Ale, standing beside him, raised her Magic Staff with perfect coordination.
A golden *Flaming Arrow* shot out.
The golden flame pierced through the white webbing. The web instantly burst into an inferno, engulfing the trapped Orcs. The searing flames elicited waves of hysterical screams.
The two Ettins shrieked as they were burned by the flames, while once again pulling stone blocks from their pouches and hurling them toward Colin and his group.
Colin performed the Spellcasting, and a transparent Shield materialized around him.
He gritted his teeth and tried to take the impact with his shoulder.
The flying boulder made contact with the force-field Shield, causing its surface to ripple instantly.
Even the *Shield* spell couldn’t alter the stone’s trajectory. The boulder slammed squarely into Colin’s shoulder, sending him staggering.
He felt his whole body go numb. Waves of suffocating pain pulsed from his shoulder, and the arm below it quickly began to go numb as well.
Immediately after, a loud CLANG rang out beside him.
Orelia, who was shielding Ale, was knocked to the ground by a stone. A white mark had appeared in the center of her Kite Shield.
Orelia frowned, raised her shield again, and stood up, simultaneously beginning to recite a prayer.
A moment later, a warm feeling began to spread through Colin’s shoulder and arm.
’I can’t let these two Ettins keep throwing stones with impunity!’
Colin roared, "People up front, clear a path!"
Kase dropped his Longbow, drew the Giant Axe from his back, and with a great roar, entered a *Frenzy*. Mog immediately charged forward as well.
Hearing the commotion behind them, the mercenaries up front turned to see the massive Ogre and immediately parted to either side, forcing open a path. This path led directly to the Ettin on the right.
The Orcs on the flanks also saw this gap in the Defense and began to swarm toward it.
Colin began his Spellcasting again.
With a series of soft CRACKLES, a ball of electricity began to form above his Spellbook. As the final syllable fell, the white lightning shot forward with a ZAP, following the path everyone had cleared.
The Orcs that had just rushed forward, along with their comrades behind them, were all electrocuted into charred husks. The lightning even gouged a black scar across the ground.
The lightning bolt instantly silenced the clamor of the battlefield.
Both sides unconsciously glanced at where the lightning had passed, trying to see whether the one who caused the commotion was friend or foe.
’Alright, go take care of that Ettin,’ Colin said in his mind.
