Chapter 471 - 470: Experience Against Dragons

Chapter 471: Chapter 470: Experience Against Dragons

The moment he heard the word "dragon," goosebumps erupted all over Colin’s skin, and blood rushed to his head.

He looked up to see a pair of bat-like wings, spanning six meters, sweep through the air.

The creature was covered in brown scales, making it look almost identical to the surrounding tree trunks.

It had neck frills on either side of its head, making it resemble a cobra more than a Giant Dragon. Unlike other Dragon Species, it only had two hind legs and no forelegs. Its tail was also longer than that of a proportionally-sized White Dragon, and the tip ended in a stinger like a scorpion’s.

It was a Wyvern.

The moment he saw what it was, Colin breathed a sigh of relief.

Wyverns don’t have a breath weapon. Their Intelligence and potential for causing Damage to large groups were both significantly lower than a young White Dragon’s.

’A creature with a beast’s mentality understands self-preservation; it shouldn’t attack such a large group.’

"Raise your Long Spears!" Colin shouted.

The words had barely left his mouth when the Wyvern tucked its wings and dove toward the wagon fort like a black Arrow.

The Mercenaries below reacted quickly, desperately thrusting their weapons at the monster in the air, like a threatened hedgehog bristling its spines.

Just as the Wyvern, finding no opening to attack, prepared to gain altitude, Albert staggered to his feet. He had been thrown about by the Ettin earlier and was still dizzy, clutching his head right in the Wyvern’s path.

The Wyvern extended its talons, snatched Albert up, and with a powerful beat of its wings, soared into the air.

Meanwhile, its long, barbed tail continuously probed at Albert’s body, searching for a place to drive its stinger.

However, Albert was encased in armor like a tin can and had very few weak spots. The Wyvern probed for a good while but couldn’t find an angle to attack with its stinger.

’This thing has expensive taste, picking the richest person here.’

While quipping internally, Colin quickly began Casting a Spell.

’Wyverns are fairly stupid creatures, after all. The books specifically mention that they almost never change their flight path while hunting. As long as you’re quick-witted, it’s not hard to dodge their swoops from the ground.’

With a flash of electric light, a [Lightning Bolt] precisely struck the Wyvern’s right wing.

At the same time, Kase, who was standing at the front, unslung his Longbow, nocked an Arrow, and fired, striking the Wyvern’s left wing and tearing a small hole in the membrane.

"SKREEE!"

The Wyvern shrieked, immediately dropped its prey, and fled in a panic.

Seeing this, Colin immediately dashed in Albert’s direction.

He chanted a Spell. His body was instantly engulfed in a silver mist, and in the next moment, he had moved about ten meters forward, leaping clear of the wagon fort.

Aided by the effects of [Haste], Colin surged forward with all his might.

But despite his desperate sprint, he couldn’t get within the twenty-meter Casting range for [Feather Fall] before Albert hit the ground. He could only watch helplessly as Albert slammed into a moss-choked gap between the roots of a tree.

Colin shouted toward the spot where Albert had fallen, "Are you okay?"

"I’m... fine, I think." Albert pushed himself up, sitting on the moss and panting heavily.

By then, the others had rushed over as well.

"I’m fine!" Albert shouted before anyone could ask.

He staggered to his feet. From the look on his face, he was still shaken, but he didn’t seem to be injured. His armor just had a few more scratches.

’That was understandable. After all, for a nobleman, being tossed around like a ball by an Ettin and then nearly getting carried off by a Wyvern were quite the thrilling experiences.’

’That armor of his is really something, though,’ Colin thought. ’If I’d taken a few hits like that, I definitely wouldn’t have gotten away unscathed.’

Colin turned and shouted to the others, "Go deal with the loot back there."

Seeing that everything was fine, the others did as Colin said and went back to clean up the battlefield.

Colin walked over to Albert and helped him to his feet.

He asked, "Well? Was that battle to your liking?"

"It was... adequate, I suppose." Albert managed a smile. "Thank you for saving me."

Colin studied his expression.

The corners of Albert’s mouth were still trembling when he smiled; he clearly wasn’t as composed as he was letting on.

’At this point, Colin didn’t want to ask why Albert had charged forward when he was clearly terrified. He figured Albert wouldn’t tell the truth anyway, so all he could do was pray things would go smoothly from here on out.’

Colin laid the few Javelins he had collected on the ground, placing them with the rest of the loot.

With a whole caravan of people, cleaning up the battlefield went very quickly.

The Mercenaries had already inventoried most of the equipment and valuables from the dead Orcs, and Dorn had also removed a few of the Ettin’s fingers.

Giant’s fingernails were supposedly used to create a "Giant’s Power Potion," a Magic Potion that could temporarily grant the user strength comparable to a Giant. Whether that was true or not, he didn’t know.

Colin looked at Albert and said, "I don’t think we discussed how to divide the spoils with the caravan."

"Hm? You’re right. But it stands to reason that you all should get the largest share. You did the most work, after all." Albert replied distractedly, his eyes cautiously scanning the sky.

Colin glanced up at the sky as well.

’He was actually quite disappointed they hadn’t managed to bring down the Wyvern.’

’Unlike True Dragons, which excelled at wide-area breath attacks, Wyverns specialized in attacking single targets with their tails. The venom in their stingers was also one of the most infamous Poisons.’

’On the black market, it was said that a single vial of Wyvern venom could fetch several hundred Gold Coins.’

"Hey, Colin."

Albert’s voice broke his train of thought. "What’s wrong?" Colin asked. "Are you hurt?"

"I just wanted to ask... back when you faced that True Dragon..." Albert stared at his own palm. "What did it feel like?"

Colin rubbed the stubble on his chin. "Feeling? I didn’t really feel anything. I’d already figured out how I was going to kill that White Dragon from the very beginning. After that, it was just a matter of executing the plan. Of course, the final outcome was left to fate.

"To be honest, halfway through the fight, the dragon had already knocked me senseless. After that, my body just moved on its own. By the time I came to my senses, I was lying next to the White Dragon’s corpse."

Albert heaved a deep sigh and looked up at the sky again.

"Honestly, for a moment there when it grabbed me, I felt like I was already dead."

"You must have some gear or an item to protect yourself, right?" Colin said. "Something like a ring that lets you Teleport, or an item that can summon a Legendary creature?"

"Would it still be an adventure if I brought things like that, Colin?" Albert took a deep breath, his gaze turning silently to the distance.

Hearing this, Colin was at a loss for words.

He followed Albert’s gaze toward the wagon fort, where the others were taking stock of the casualties.
