Chapter 545: Chapter 545: It Takes Two to Tango
Claire Sinclair’s heart seemed to skip a beat. She desperately wanted to say something but didn’t dare speak out of turn. Swallowing her indignation, she did her best to keep her tone level. "Mr. Quincy is outside on the phone. I’ll be quiet so you can rest."
Old Master Quincy suddenly asked her, "Do you know what kind of man Adrian is destined to become?"
"The leader of a nation," Claire Sinclair replied bluntly.
Old Master Quincy frowned slightly. "Since you know that, do you think you’re qualified to be the First Lady?"
Claire Sinclair answered with almost no hesitation, "No."
"Since you have such self-awareness, why are you still with him?"
"I..." Claire Sinclair was suddenly at a loss for words.
’That’s right, why was she clinging to him? She hadn’t thought about that question in a long time.’
’She had thought that if she just worked hard enough, she would be worthy of him. But now, in front of the white-bearded old man, she was discovering that her efforts seemed to be for nothing.’
Old Master Quincy’s breathing suddenly became uneven, but he persisted. "Adrian’s wife must be another public face for our country, Aridia. She must not only be cultured and sensible but also possess the aura of a mother to the nation, someone who can command the respect of all our people. How many of those qualities do you believe you possess?"
Claire Sinclair shook her head. She didn’t possess a single one of them.
Old Master Quincy continued, "Since you have nothing to offer, if you become the First Lady, what do you think you could do for this country?"
Claire Sinclair immediately said, "I’m currently a reporter for the Astoria Daily. I can use my pen to seek justice for those who need help!"
Old Master Quincy said, "A reporter’s pen is certainly a powerful weapon, but I am not satisfied with your answer."
Claire Sinclair didn’t understand what he wanted to hear. After thinking for a long time, she said, "I may not have my sister’s physical prowess or Mr. Quincy’s extraordinary foresight, but I’m still trying."
But Old Master Quincy was unimpressed and suddenly changed the subject. "I hear you’re the one who put Yara in prison for ten years?"
Claire Sinclair said coldly, "I don’t have that kind of power. She brought it on herself."
Old Master Quincy stared at her with cold eyes. He didn’t speak, but his gaze was a clear demand for an explanation.
Ever since studying under Teacher Hartwell, Claire Sinclair had learned to read people. She took the hint and explained, "Yara Quincy killed my and Mr. Quincy’s child."
"What?" Old Master Quincy almost thought he had misheard.
Claire Sinclair bit her lip and recounted the painful memory. "One day, I came to the hospital to visit you and was blocked at the door by Yara Quincy. She attacked me, causing my miscarriage. Then she conspired with a doctor to hide it from me. When Mr. Quincy and I found out, we pressed charges against her. I believe that taking a life must be punished by law, and if you think I was in the wrong for that, then I’m sorry, but I will not accept your judgment."
After she finished speaking, Claire Sinclair stood up.
While sitting, she had lacked any real presence, seeming so humble she could be easily trampled on. But after standing up, she was like a warrior goddess infused with a new soul, her aura overwhelming.
Old Master Quincy looked up slightly, gazing at the girl who had suddenly become so assertive. "Why did Yara attack you?"
"I don’t know."
"’It takes two to tango,’" Old Master Quincy reminded her.
Claire Sinclair found it laughable. "Old Mr. Quincy, in that case, I’ll ask you to listen calmly to everything I have to say. And please, do not interrupt me."
Old Master Quincy frowned but didn’t speak, which was a tacit agreement.
