Chapter 544: Chapter 544: Prepare for the Funeral
Claire Sinclair glanced at her, said nothing, and silently started to walk around her.
Mrs. Quincy spoke up from behind her. "Claire Sinclair, you cling to Adrian and have torn my Quincy Family to pieces. What is it that you’re really after?"
Hearing this, Claire Sinclair frowned, slowly turned around, and said coldly, "What I’m after is something people like you will never have in your entire lives."
With that meaningful parting shot, she turned and left.
Mrs. Quincy snorted and muttered, "Acting all high and mighty. Once you leave my Adrian, you’ll be nothing."
-
Claire Sinclair arrived outside the emergency room. Seeing the man sitting in the hallway, she walked over and sat down beside him.
Adrian Quincy reached out, gently took her small hand, and said in a low voice, "Claire, don’t worry. I’m here."
As much as Claire wanted to pull her hand back, she couldn’t bear to. She let him hold it and said softly, "If Grandpa doesn’t make it through this, will I become the guilty one?"
"I don’t know what Yara told Grandpa. Once he wakes up, we can just explain it to him."
Claire wanted to ask what they would do if Grandpa didn’t wake up, but she didn’t want to say something so ominous, so she kept it to herself.
The two of them were silent for a moment before Claire couldn’t help but speak. "What on earth is your sister thinking? Grandpa is so sick, and she still tells him things like that."
"She wants to get out of prison. Grandpa is her last chance," Adrian analyzed.
Claire turned her head to meet his gaze and said in disbelief, "If Grandpa pleads for your sister, will you let her out of prison?"
Adrian Quincy shook his head. "Claire, I don’t have that kind of authority. And even if I did, I wouldn’t use it."
"So do you have that authority or not?" Claire pressed.
Adrian Quincy denied it with absolute certainty. "No."
Claire smiled. "I couldn’t care less about all that. But if your sister is pardoned, I won’t stay with you."
It was a matter of principle.
Adrian Quincy squeezed her palm a little tighter. "Claire, trust me."
Claire said nothing more, lapsing into silence once again.
After some time, the doors to the emergency room finally opened, and a doctor came out, pushing Old Master Quincy’s gurney.
Adrian Quincy shot to his feet and hurried over. "Doctor, how is my grandfather?"
The doctor let out a sigh of relief. "We brought him back, but he probably won’t last more than a couple of days. You should start making arrangements."
Adrian Quincy’s brows furrowed, but he said nothing.
Claire walked up behind him and took his large hand with her small one. Her gaze fell on the unconscious old master, and a mix of complicated feelings churned within her.
The two of them followed Old Master Quincy into the hospital room and stood vigil for a long time. They barely spoke a word the entire time.
Finally, Adrian Quincy’s phone suddenly rang. He glanced at the caller ID, then abruptly stood up, intending to take the call outside.
Claire’s heart tightened, and she subconsciously grabbed his hand. "Can’t you take it in here?"
She was afraid that Grandpa would suddenly wake up while he was gone, leaving her at a loss for what to do.
Adrian Quincy said in a low voice, "Taking it in here might disturb Grandpa. I’ll be right back. Don’t worry."
With that, he turned and walked out.
A moment later, Claire heard him talking on the phone in the hallway. She couldn’t tell what language he was speaking, but his tone didn’t sound good. No wonder he had to step out to take the call.
Just as her attention was drifting, Old Master Quincy suddenly opened his eyes.
A violent tremor ran through Claire’s heart. "Grandpa!" she cried out urgently.
Old Master Quincy’s brow tightened. Having just returned from the brink of death, his voice was a few shades hoarser, yet it was still just as domineering. "Don’t call me Grandpa. You don’t have the right."
