I Married Three Calamities (And Got A System For It)
Chapter 12: I wanted to bragChapter 12: Chapter 12: I wanted to brag
Fortunately, the girls didn’t say anything about Mars’s degenerate comment.
But what they didn’t say openly, they showed through their stares, which hurt Mars more than words ever could.
Solaris looked at him as though he were some piece of trash that had somehow wandered into the house. She even dared to scrunch her nose at him.
Willow’s pink eyes stayed blank behind her glasses, but not her usual blankness, this particular flavor of blank perfectly conveyed disgust.
Only Moon reacted differently. She laughed, her seductive purple eyes glinting, and even walked toward him, offering to let him sniff, or, word for word, "Do you want to smell the real thing?"
Mars’s face exploded in crimson, and he put distance between them quickly, edging closer to Solaris instead. At least the sun woman could reliably lower his raging testosterone with her foul mouth.
You had to be realistic, after all.
And he was right, Solaris did curse him out. He took it all with a smile, and she stopped once she noticed.
She huffed in annoyance and walked off toward her room. She returned minutes later, tossing Mars a black t-shirt printed with a famous anime character.
A character from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure!
Mars lit up, staring at Solaris with stars in his eyes.
"So you like—!"
"I don’t! Shut up! Just wear it and stop being a pervert like Moon!"
Mars gratefully accepted the t-shirt.
Moon, meanwhile, was still thoroughly entertained by Mars. She watched him with a wide smile, and that was when something happened.
DING!
[Moon’s Progression has decreased by 1%.]
Mars froze at the notification.
At that point, they were choosing among four cards to form the teams, but his mind was suddenly far too focused on the system notification.
’Wait, what? This is possible too?’
[Yes, Consort Fox. You can lower the Progression of the Seeds of Calamity.]
’How?’ Mars thought eagerly.
[It depends on each woman individually. For Moon Skygazer, the answer should be obvious by now, Consort Fox.]
Mars thought hard about it, trying to pinpoint exactly what he’d done to lower Moon’s Progression.
And honestly, all he’d done was say some ridiculous, degenerate things and play along with her...
’...oh my God? Don’t tell me?’
His eyes drifted instinctively toward Moon.
’Is that why she always says such sexual stuff? Does she also enjoy receiving it?’
[Yes. That’s one way.] the System confirmed.
Mars fell quiet, thinking. If lowering it could really be that simple, then maybe he needed to take this little game between them more seriously.
’Will I gain anything from it?’ He asked, mostly out of curiosity, not particularly invested in the answer.
[If it drops by 5%.]
Mars smiled to himself. By then, the teams had already been decided.
He looked at his card and noticed it matched Solaris’s.
The two looked at each other. Mars smiled; Solaris scowled.
"Guess we’re stuck together this month, Solaris."
"Don’t talk to me, plebeian."
"I expect you to actually work." Moon said arrogantly to Willow.
Willow ignored her.
Moon’s lips twitched heavily.
Mars suppressed a laugh and moved on to discussing the household rules.
Getting all of them to agree on anything proved incredibly difficult. Terribly difficult. But with steel-plated patience and his Gift for reading emotions, Mars eventually managed to secure agreement on some rules, after extensive negotiation.
First, the house would be cleaned every morning they were home. Teams would alternate cleaning duty by day.
And whichever team cooked and cleaned on a given day, the other was free to do whatever, as long as they didn’t make a mess of things.
Mars also recognized they needed time to train, so he carved out a dedicated slot for it. Fortunately, the house had two training rooms.
There was even a small garden, just large enough to enjoy the sun, on the ground floor. The first floor had a gym and a sauna. The second floor housed a movie room and a game room. The third floor held a library, though it was currently empty of books.
Complain as they might, the house was undeniably luxurious.
But now the responsibility of maintaining it fell to them, and that would require a significant amount of money they simply didn’t have.
That was when Mars finally asked the three women what kind of Serum Gifted people might need but currently lack.
The proposals and debate that followed dragged on far longer than necessary, with the women bickering back and forth.
In the end, Mars settled on Willow’s proposal.
"The Dream World is a significant part of our world," Willow said, adjusting her glasses, "and even though only Warden-rank individuals can begin to access and enter it, it’s well known that food is scarce there. Whatever you bring with you gets poisoned."
She looked at each of them, "so a Serum that could substitute for food."
"Doesn’t that already exist?" Moon asked, frowning slightly.
"It does." Willow nodded, "but not adequately. What currently exists only works for those at Warden rank. But plenty of lower-rank Hunters venture into Warrens and stay for days at a time. The environment inside Warrens mirrors the Dream World, just less severe. Either way, their food still gets poisoned. How many Hunters have died because of that alone?"
Willow’s reasoning made sense.
Though the Serum existed, it wasn’t available to the general population.
Mars couldn’t understand why, if scientists could create one for stronger individuals, they hadn’t done the same for weaker ones.
Maybe it was harder than it appeared. Or maybe...
...they simply didn’t care enough.
After all, Hunters were born every second. But those at Warden rank, or S rank by Warren classification, were priceless. They were the true protectors of the country.
They were thus worth the effort. The rest, apparently, weren’t.
"Why are you asking, though?" Moon asked Mars.
He smiled, "Because we’re going to brew that Serum and sell it. We need money, don’t we? But first, we need Hunter Licenses to avoid trouble."
"Today?" Solaris frowned.
"No, not today. Tomorrow, after our first cooking and cleaning lesson." Mars said, sighing, his eyes distant, "Today, I need to head back to my old apartment and grab some clothes."
He looked at them, smiling,
"Anyone want to—!"
"Fuck no."
"No."
"Sorry, sweetheart~"
Mars shut his mouth, staring at them with betrayed eyes.
"Fuck, I really wanted to brag."
