Chapter 17: Chapter 17: You Are Going Nowhere

"You are going nowhere," Moon said in a flat tone, for once losing her usual slurred edge.

Her voice traveled through the living room, drowning it in a sharp silence, making Willow halt on her steps, while Solaris snapped her head towards Moon, still sitting on the couch.

"Why am I not even surprised?" Solaris said. "I knew you didn’t fucking care about him. I knew all you cared about was toying with him. But you truly felt nothing seeing your toy get beaten up outside?"

"Because you care?" Moon replied.

"It wasn’t me acting like a horny bitch around him, was it?" She turned towards Willow. "Right? Who was here, sweetheart this, sweetheart that? You damned Skygazers are truly fucking poison in this world."

"I don’t care what you say about my family. As far as I’m concerned, they can die and I won’t blink an eye." Moon shrugged. "However, I don’t know what I said that makes you think I don’t care about him."

"The most important question is where you found the nerve to order me, Moon." Willow finally interjected, her voice dead cold.

"I think the two of you aren’t thinking straight. I’m not surprised about Solaris: she’s a dumb bitch who acts before thinking. But," Moon turned her purple eyes towards Willow, "I thought an assassin would be smarter than this."

"Say what you mean or stay silent," Willow hissed.

"You don’t know who beat up my sweetheart," Moon said.

Solaris rolled her eyes in disgust.

"I can find out," Willow replied.

"You no longer have the influence and network of the Rose Guild, Willow. And if you try, they’ll know. And if they know, we’ll attract unnecessary trouble." Moon began to frown. "Do I need to remind you what we saw on TV earlier?"

She turned her attention on Solaris. "Do I need to remind you too, you sun-worshipping bitch? After all, you almost killed Mars during your little mental breakdown."

"I didn’t want to do it," Solaris growled, her eyes burning with golden fire dangerously.

"That doesn’t change the fact. Yet he forgave you. I would have killed you if it were me."

"Because you think you fucking can?"

"Don’t try me, Solaris. Your type is the easiest to kill." Her cold smirk spread across her face. "You’re so overwhelmingly loud for no reason."

"You—!"

"And that’s exactly why we should protect him," Willow cut into Solaris’s angry words, making the Lightbringer’s former princess even angrier. "Mars can accept us, and he is accepting us. I won’t let anyone touch him. I warned you, Moon."

She looked at Solaris. "I’m warning you now. Don’t touch him."

"He isn’t doing it because he loves us, you know?" Moon said. "He’s afraid. He doesn’t have a choice here."

"It doesn’t matter," Willow said, then suddenly grew tired of this long, useless discussion. It wasn’t in her habit to speak so much.

She turned to go into her room to get ready, but Moon’s voice stopped her again.

"Let’s first find out who’s behind this," she said.

"I can do it," Willow repeated.

"I know, but it’ll bring us more problems. We don’t need more."

"Then—!"

"I’ll make him speak," Moon interrupted her, regaining her sensual, amused smile. "I’ll make my sweetheart tell me who in the hell dared touch our husband."

"He’s not my fucking husband," Solaris growled.

Both Moon and Willow ignored her.

"That’s the wisest choice here, Willow. And you know that." Moon said. "If you act mindlessly, we don’t know what we’ll face. Again, we’re no longer Prime. We’ve taken the status of Mars’s wives, which means..."

She smiled coldly.

"...we’re nothing but bloody fucking commoners. The local Protectors won’t give us face if we cause trouble."

Willow clicked her tongue, realizing the truth. "How long?" she asked, voice annoyed. "How long till you make him speak?"

Moon tilted her head, thinking, looking in the direction Mars had disappeared. "Two days at most."

Willow Rose grimaced, hesitating.

"In the meantime," Moon continued, "you can focus on the Serum. We need to know where to find all the ingredients. We need the money."

Willow stayed silent for a moment before sighing, clearly dissatisfied. She hated the fact that someone had touched Mars, because he alone seemed able to deal with them.

It seemed simple, but for someone who had been shunned by her own family and everyone else... a man like Mars wasn’t easy to find.

But Willow also knew the danger behind her rash actions.

’Calm down, you’re an assassin. Always keep calm. It’s okay, you’ll find out who they are, and make them pay.’

Gathering herself, she nodded at Moon before going towards her room to read in order to calm down.

Only Moon and Solaris were left behind.

Moon looked at her, stood up, and also walked towards her own room.

"Don’t destroy anything else in our house, will you?" She snickered at her. "Fucking sun worshipper."

Solaris gritted her teeth, clenching her fists tightly until her nails dug in deep.

She looked at the empty space where the dining table had been before she burned it, and remembered the event that had happened during her loss of control.

She bit her lip and slumped down on the couch, her head buried in her hands.

"I didn’t want to do it," she muttered to herself, her voice muffled. "I didn’t want to, Father. I didn’t want to. I’m sorry. I’m truly sorry."

Her heart began to feel like it was being scorched as an event long in the past, the first time she ever had an episode, resurfaced inside her mind.

"I didn’t want to cripple my own sister, Father."

...

"It hurts like hell," Mars complained, sitting on the ground, his back resting against the bed.

Once more, he was struck by the difference between this room and his old apartment.

"Now I feel bad about leaving Aunt Mari and Hope there." He smiled wryly. "I hope nothing bad is going to happen to them. I must find a way soon."

Suddenly, Mars found himself with so many problems to deal with.

He sighed, then continued to ponder the room and the gangsters more, trying uselessly to distract his mind from the scene earlier.

It was deeply embarrassing, and Mars didn’t know if he had the heart to face them tomorrow.

"Honestly, these damn gangsters, do they not know it’s basic courtesy not to touch the face of the victim? Now look what they put me through!"

[Do you have an idea, Consort Fox?] the system suddenly asked. [Your situation can affect the progression of the Seeds of Calamity. It’s better if you solve it fast.]

"Hey, I’m thinking, alright?" Mars grumbled. "I’m trying to see what I have and can use right now. I don’t need more pressure."

There was a short silence before another panel appeared.

[Here is the reward for the House Rules Quest: Ring of Sunlight (C rank)]

Mars tilted his head as an item appeared in his hand. It was a ring with the symbol of a burning white sun beautifully etched on top.

Simply holding it made Mars feel warm.

He looked at the information:

[Ring of Sunlight]

[Grade: C rank.]

[Description: A ring created with steel tempered in the blood of a Priest of the Sun.

Wearing this ring without being a Believer of the Sun God will get you imprisoned by the Church of the Holy Sun.]

[Effect: +25% enhanced control of Sun-like aspects, Mid-Level Resistance to Sun-like Aspects.]

Reading it, Mars frowned. "This is clearly not something useful to me." He said, before his mind suddenly went straight to Solaris.

He paused, stroking his chin pensively, grimacing at the same time because of the pain.

"Maybe... maybe I can lower her animosity with this?" he wondered, knowing well the importance of getting along with his new wives. "And there’s something else too."

He raised his hand and clenched it slowly.

"I am embarrassingly weak. I need to put my combat talent to use and get stronger before I meet these two bloody gangsters."

And for that, there was clearly no one better than Solaris, who was, objectively, the strongest fighter among them.

Mars smiled, crooked.

"Well," he played with the ring between his fingers, "shall we ask Solaris to teach me how to fight?"

He chuckled strangely.

"I hope she won’t burn me to death."
