Chapter 18: Chapter 18: A Deal With Solaris

The night passed and Mars woke up early, at 7am, as usual. Like any young man of New Earth, the first thing he did was check his phone.

It wasn’t because he was expecting anything, it was just a bad habit he couldn’t get rid of.

However, the thing that welcomed him the moment the broken screen of his iPhone 12 lit up was dozens of missed calls and messages from his boss at the restaurant.

Seeing them immediately jolted Mars upward, making him sit up on the comfortable, luxurious bed.

"Oh damn," he muttered, blinking his eyes rapidly to drive away the lingering sleep, "I completely forgot about this."

Mars was planning to quit his job. Even if he needed the money, he couldn’t see himself working as a waiter after marrying his three wives.

He didn’t want to care, but he still cared about how they looked at him and what they thought of him.

However, Mars wasn’t stupid enough to quit before his boss paid him the money he owed him.

"Knowing him, that fat bastard won’t pay me my money anytime soon," he said to himself, grimacing as he shifted into a more comfortable position, "and even less so if I don’t go slave for his big ass."

He furrowed his brow, wondering how he could get his money in that case.

Because truth be told, he needed it. They were supposed to buy the ingredients for the Food Serum soon, and Mars wanted to contribute.

But no matter how he looked at it, only through force would his boss agree to pay him.

"Argh, damn it," Mars groaned, dragging an exasperated hand across his face before his eyes hardened.

"At this point, I have no choice but to change my tactics. I was obedient and accepted everything that bastard did to me because I was poor, a waiter, and weak." He got out of bed, walked two steps, and looked at the mirror in front of him.

There, Mars, in black boxers, saw his whole body bruised from head to toe, the pain still aching at each random movement.

His face went cold.

"I’m no longer that helpless. I have a talent, I have a way to increase my Gift’s power, and I have my wives." He said, "If I can’t do it for myself, I must do it for them, even though these three women could be the death of my poor ass."

He chuckled at the end, but his mind was made up.

He was now fully drawn into a world of violence; a world where everyone used their Gifts or privileges to obtain what they wanted, no matter the cost.

Living in this kind of world and accepting to be stepped on was just asking to be exploited, then eventually killed.

’It’s time to adapt.’

Otherwise, Mars knew he would die. And just As his mother used to quote his father,

’When it’s time to be a man, be a man!’

Mars laughed at the memory, remembering how his mother used to imitate his father’s voice and expression while saying that.

It was one of the rare moments he could catch a glimpse of who his father was.

But one thing was certain...

’My father wasn’t good with words at all.’

He shook his head with a smile and walked towards his bathroom, intending to get ready for the morning with Solaris.

Today it was the two of them’s turn to cook and clean.

...

When Mars was done, wearing grey pants and a black shirt, he entered the living room and saw Solaris sitting there.

She wore a long pink shirt with a character from a movie he didn’t recognize; a shirt that reached just past her knees. Once again, Mars got a full view of her thighs.

They were majestic.

That day, Solaris also wore a bonnet around her head to cover her hair.

She was honestly beautiful... if one overlooked her angry expression.

’She always looks angry,’ Mars thought to himself. "Morning, Solaris. How are—!"

"How come I woke up earlier than you, plebeian?" Solaris interrupted him directly, her eyes glowering down at him. "I’ve been waiting here for a while now! Let’s finish this bullshit fast, goddamnit, I have my daily training to do!"

Mars’s lips twitched heavily.

Normally, he would have accepted this situation and just gone along with it. But after yesterday’s events, he’d gotten a cold wake-up call.

He needed to change. No, not change exactly.

’I just need the courage to be more myself, instead of who I need to be so as not to get killed by some random gangster.’

And so,

"Sigh," Mars sighed heavily, making Solaris glare at him. "To think I’ve had such a hard time waking up because of my terrible wounds, yet not a shred of mercy!"

"Are you crazy?" Solaris’s face twisted, and she stood up from the couch, standing in front of him. "Do you expect me to pity you? It’s not my fault you’re a fucking weakling! And besides..." her brow furrowed deeply, "who the fuck even beat you up?"

"I said I fell—!"

"And I’m the Bloody Queen of England!"

"She’s dead, Solaris. Did you go to school, or is that not what rich kids do nowadays?"

"Are you actually mocking me?" Solaris hissed. "You know what? That’s your damn problem. Go ahead and get beaten up outside like the useless bastard you are."

’Ouch. That hurts.’

"I am useless, aren’t I?"

"Do I need to spell it out for you?"

"Then train me," Mars said with a shameless smile. "I want to learn to be strong."

"You? Strong?" She scoffed. "For fucking what?"

’For what? Is this woman for real? For myself, for these damn gangsters I need to teach a bloody lesson they’ll never forget, for the Warrens we’re going to enter, AND — I emphasize the AND — because I’m married to three walking calamities ready to kill me any time!’

Mars wished he could shout this in her face, but he controlled himself, and instead...

"To protect you," Mars said, and Solaris paused. "Whether you like it or not, the three of you are my wives, and the document has been signed. I might not be worthy right now..."

"At least you know yourself."

"...but I want to be worthy."

"Why should I even bother helping you train?" Solaris said, crossing her arms over her chest. "You don’t look talented to me."

Mars smirked. "I might surprise you."

"A plebeian could never surprise me."

"And it’s not like you’ll do it for free," Mars said, ignoring her words.

"Gain what?"

Mars glanced around him, as if afraid Moon and Willow might hear him, before leaning forward towards Solaris, making the woman instinctively take a step back, her face suddenly slightly red.

Before she could scream at him, Mars already spoke:

"One more massage, just for you."

Solaris froze. She locked her golden eyes on Mars’s, surprised by the unexpected proposal.

"What do you think?" he added.

Mars was so close to her that she could feel the heat of his body. It was strange. Compared to the blinding, searing heat of her family, or the poison of Moon and the almost nonexistent warmth of Willow... Mars’s heat was like a dying fire struggling against a whirlwind.

It was frail, yet oddly resistant.

Once again, she looked into his eyes, and found them rather beautiful.

That unexpected thought made her eyes snap even wider.

’What? Solaris! You bloody fool, what were you thinking!!!’ she cursed herself.

"You don’t like it? Then what about two massages?"

"Two?" Solaris snapped back to reality, burning away those useless thoughts.

If Mars indeed had a Massage talent, then having two, more than the other bitches, would be a great way to mock them.

That would prove she was the best, since Mars had come to her for help, not them.

That thought alone improved Solaris’s mood. But she didn’t want to show it to Mars.

Mars already knew, though. His Aspect was already at work, letting him sense her emotions.

And that made him choose to end the negotiation with the real prize.

"And you’ll get this too," he said, taking out the Ring of Sunlight and holding it in front of her. "I obtained this ring yesterday, and decided to give it to you, since it suits you more."

Solaris’s eyes instantly fixed on the ring.

"However, before I give it to you, I have one question," Mars said, smiling. "Do you believe in the Sun God, Solaris?"
