Chapter 4: Chapter 4: Consort System

’A system?’ Mars thought, hazy, slowly backing away before slumping down onto the couch like a sack of rocks.

His eyes stayed fixed on the panels hovering in the air.

"Oh, poor sweetheart, you two already traumatized him." Moon said in a sad voice, almost as if she were on the verge of tears.

"You fucking Skygazer, you really love to lie and play innocent." Solaris said with disgust, glaring at Moon. "Why don’t you drop the act? This plebeian won’t say a word even if you show him who you really are. This is getting nauseating."

"You know, you should be more like our lovely Willow here." Moon replied, trying to hold onto her smile. But Solaris always knew exactly which button to press to make her want to murder. "She’s silent as a grave. But you’re always hollering like a damn whore in a strip club trying to attract attention."

"A what?" Solaris’s voice turned deathly cold.

"I don’t like repeating myself." Moon replied, her smile widening.

"You—!"

"Enough." Willow spoke again, her voice like an icicle, cold and piercing.

Both Moon and Solaris turned toward her, meeting her flat pink eyes behind her glasses, their own eyes narrowing dangerously.

"I like you as a silent bitch. Let’s keep it that way, shall we, darling?" Moon said.

"Who are you to give orders, you blood-hungry bitch?" Solaris shot back.

But Willow was unbothered. She held their gaze a moment longer before slowly turning her head toward Mars, watching him stare blankly at the space in front of him, his eyes widening by the second.

"Oh, we’d better concern ourselves with our lovely husband here." Moon said. "I don’t need to remind you what happens to us if he dies. At least, too soon. We have been sacrificed by our families for a so-called alliance."

She looked at each of them, her voice dropping to a tight whisper, before scoffing. "Who can they fool? Alliance? Our three families? Impossible. Not after everything we have done to each other. However, if we destroy whatever they planned by killing this lovely husband here, let’s forget marrying us to a waiter. We will be..."

Moon let her words trail off, with no need to say anything more. They knew their families better than anyone.

They knew exactly what those families were capable of.

Solaris huffed and looked away, her irritation deepening. Willow narrowed her eyes, closed them briefly, then opened them again, returning to her book as though nothing had happened.

A tense, heavy silence settled over the room, deepening the atmosphere further.

And while the women argued among themselves, Mars was absorbing the information from his system, and the sheer fact that he had a system to begin with.

’Am I in a novel, or what?’

This was unexpected. Ridiculous, even.

Multiple panels flashed in front of him, and Mars focused instantly, both excitement and apprehension burning in his chest.

[You have married Three of the Seeds of Calamity of Earth.]

[The Consort System has been activated and bound to Mars Fox!]

[The purpose of the Consort System is to prevent the Full Transformation of the Seeds of Calamity into True Calamities.]

’Now wait just a damn second! What?!’

The system didn’t wait.

[To achieve that, the System will provide Quests, without exception, aimed at preventing that dreadful future.]

[Each completed Quest will grant rewards based on its nature and difficulty. Each failed Quest will add one or more percentage points to the Transformation Progress of the Calamities.]

[Bear this in mind, Consort Fox...]

’...great. That’s my nickname now.’

[...outside events can also affect the Progression percentage of the Seeds of Calamity.]

[Do you understand?]

Mars didn’t know what to say. It seemed this system wanted him to serve as a babysitter for three dangerous, murderous women.

’But Calamities? What does that even mean?’ Mars wondered, though the system offered little patience.

[Do you understand?] it asked again.

’What... would I get out of it?’ Mars gathered his courage and asked.

Ever since this whole ordeal began, he’d been shoved around as if his opinions and feelings didn’t matter, and frankly, he’d had enough.

No matter how beautiful these women were, or how thrilling it might be to call himself their husband—let’s be honest about that—it still wasn’t pleasant being treated this way.

So Mars had no intention of putting himself in danger for these so-called Calamities if he wasn’t gaining something in return.

You had to be realistic sometimes.

[The rewards from the Quests belong to you, and you alone, and they will undoubtedly contribute to strengthening you.] the system answered flatly. [And as a token of our appreciation, Consort Fox, we have a unique piece of information for you.]

’For me?’ Mars asked, noticing the women growing restless nearby, Moon about to approach him.

He needed to hurry.

[Yes, for you. It concerns your Gift, Consort Fox. Every Gift can reach its highest level through strict Evolution conditions, though 99.99% of beings never realize this. For your Gift, Shackles of Emotions, to reach its maximum potential, you will need the Cores of Emotion.]

Mars grew even more confused.

[The first Core of Emotion is held by the Boss Monster of the Rank A Warren called the Pit of Wrathful Fire, currently under the control of the Lightbringer Guild.]

[This is our token of appreciation. Now...]

"Are you okay, sweetheart?" Moon asked, drawing closer.

[...Do you accept the System and its purpose?]

Mars looked at the system panel, recalling the information about his Gift’s potential to evolve, then slowly lifted his eyes toward Moon, taking in her stunningly beautiful face.

Thoughts flashed rapidly through his mind, though there was no real need for a thousand of them.

This was his opportunity. His chance to be more than just an orphaned waiter drowning in debt.

All he needed to do was become the perfect husband, one who kept his wives happy and healthy enough to avoid the Calamities altogether.

’Well...’

He looked at Moon, then at Solaris and Willow behind her, his smile crooked.

’...how hard could it be?’

"Yes." he answered, looking back at Moon. "I’m fine."

’I accept.’ he added inwardly.

DING!!!!
