I Married Three Calamities (And Got A System For It)
Chapter 3: Please, women, chill!Chapter 3: Chapter 3: Please, women, chill!
’This is so awkward.’ Mars thought, barely stopping his lips from twitching.
After being presented to his wives by that strangely irritating guard, they’d been left completely alone, told their job was done.
Mars still struggled to believe what was happening to him. All of this felt like some strange movie. And if it truly was one, he wouldn’t be surprised if the title was: A Newlywed Man Killed by His Three Wives on the First Night.
’Now that’s a catchy title.’ He thought, trying once again to distract himself from the current situation. But it was useless.
He sat on the black-and-grey velvet couch in the living room, facing his three new wives.
About fifteen minutes had passed. All of it in absolute silence, save for the grunts and curses Solaris kept mumbling under her breath.
Moon, for her part, was still smiling. She was always smiling. And that made Mars nervous for some reason.
Willow had stayed silent from the start. In fact, she wasn’t even looking at him anymore. She was reading a book, treating him as though he were nothing more than another piece of furniture in the room.
Mars didn’t know whether to feel offended or grateful. Maybe both.
Yes, definitely both.
After a moment, realizing none of these women would take the first step, Mars decided to be a man and...
"...Hello?" He said hesitantly.
’Embarrassing!’
But Moon giggled, her purple eyes glowing gently with something unreadable, "You don’t have to be so nervous, do you? We’re married now, you should feel comfortable with us."
"Us?" Solaris scoffed, "Don’t you dare lump me into this bullshit." She said, glaring at Moon with obvious distaste.
"I wasn’t talking to you, second-hand." Moon spared her a condescending glance, her smile widening, though her eyes turned colder, "So do me a favor and stay quiet, will you?"
"Make me." Solaris didn’t back down, going so far as to channel her mana, activating her Gift, her body slowly enveloped in a golden light, "I dare you."
"You dare me?" Moon’s smile split her face dangerously, her eyes beginning to glow with a venomous hue.
’Wow! Wow! Wow!’ Mars shot to his feet instantly, all while sensing the suppressive aura radiating from both Solaris and Moon.
But that wasn’t what concerned him most. His Gift was picking up on an emotion.
An emotion of murderous intent from Moon, directed at Solaris.
’Can these women please just chill?!’ Mars screamed inwardly, then spoke aloud, "I don’t think there’s any need to go that far."
His voice caught Moon’s attention, her eyes returning to normal as though a switch had been flipped, turning to look at him.
Even Solaris paused, glancing at him coldly and disdainfully.
Willow didn’t even look up. Whatever was happening clearly wasn’t her concern. Mars envied her indifference.
"Look, I completely understand that none of you wanted this marriage." Mars continued, speaking slowly and deliberately, using the same approach he used when difficult clients acted out.
God knew how often those bastards acted out.
"But somehow, we’re all stuck in this situation together." He attempted a smile, "I’m not asking you to accept it, each of you can live your own life, and I won’t bother any of you, but...can we at least live in harmony?"
If there was no way out of this marriage, he might as well try to survive within it.
"Is this plebeian actually trying to tell me what to do?" Solaris was outraged. "Do you even know who I am?"
"Solaris Lightbringer?" Mars said innocently, tilting his head.
"Yes!" She said fiercely, proudly, "I’m a daughter of the Lightbringer family, awakened with an S-rank Gift, and a rising star in the modeling industry! Who do you—!"
"That’s really impressive!" Mars cut in quickly, sensing Moon and Willow’s patience running thin with Solaris’s bragging through his Gift, "You have so many great talents, Miss Solaris!"
"Huh?" She exclaimed, not expecting that kind of response.
"Yes, honestly, I’m in awe. And not just about you." He turned to Moon, "I’m a big fan of your character in Julie The Witch, Miss Moon. It was your first time acting on such a big stage, but you pulled it off so well I couldn’t believe it. How did you capture the image of a broken, sadistic girl so perfectly? Hahah, it almost seemed like it was you!"
’Let’s not bring up the numerous scandals they’ve caused, alright? Fuck it, let’s just kiss their as—! I mean, let’s compliment them!’
Moon arched an eyebrow, half amused, half intrigued. Her smile widened.
Mars turned to Willow next, who was finally looking at him, "And you, Miss Willow, your musical talent is truly unique. I’ve heard rumors you can actually see sound, hahah." He laughed awkwardly, "Is that true? You don’t have to answer if it’s sensitive."
Suddenly, the tension in the room dropped, all three women’s attention now fixed on Mars.
They could sense his fear and apprehension as clearly as the midday sun, but they could also see his determination to survive this whole absurd situation.
It wasn’t the first time people had praised them. But truth be told, they’d been drowned in far more hate than praise, thanks to their own actions. And so there was something oddly endearing about a desperate man trying to smooth things over.
So they listened. And Mars didn’t stop. He couldn’t have stopped even if he’d wanted to.
"Honestly, I’m almost ashamed to talk about myself in front of you, but I suppose I should. You need to at least know me a little, if we’re going to live together."
Mars paused, forced a smile, and gathered his nerve before continuing.
"I’m Mars Fox, just a waiter at a little restaurant called Tendernism, hidden in the back alley of Street Marberie. My father died before I was born, and my mother followed when I was 12."
The room fell even quieter. So quiet each person’s breathing was audible.
"I have debts under my name I still need to pay off, and unpaid rent I’m behind on. But my life isn’t all doom and gloom, I should say, I have books, games, and webnovels. They help me a lot, and I’d love to talk about them with any of you, if you’re interested. And, ah..."
He stopped abruptly, suddenly embarrassed, lips twitching.
"...I was rambling, wasn’t I?"
"Sweetheart, I could listen to your voice all day." Moon whispered soothingly.
Solaris rolled her eyes in pure disgust. Willow simply stared at him, blank.
Mars chuckled awkwardly and decided to wrap up his embarrassing introduction,
"I’m sorry, I tend to say more than I should once I get talking. But to sum it up, I’m just Mars. Mars Fox, because my father wished so badly to go to Mars, and my mother loved foxes a bit too much and didn’t want me carrying my father’s name. And now, unexpectedly, I find myself your husband. I’m not asking for anything, just..."
He looked at each of them, his hazel eyes slowly hardening.
"...is there some way we can live together in peace?"
It was a stupid question, and all of them knew it.
There was no way they’d live in peace, not given their own personalities, and not with three women whose families had been enemies for as long as any of them could remember.
"I’m afraid..." Moon began, but didn’t finish.
"With these two bitches and you, a plebeian?" Solaris snarled.
Willow only twisted her mouth slightly, enough to convey her own feelings.
Mars’s heart sank, realizing there truly was no way to live in peace with them. However...
"You’ll survive." Moon said, trying to encourage him.
"Definitely not." Solaris shook her head.
"Probably." Willow spoke for the first time.
And as if it had only been waiting for her voice to finally reach his ears:
