Chapter 9: Chapter 9: Solaris’s Episode

9:

Mars didn’t even glance at the Quest.

He was already on his feet, staring at Solaris’s body shimmering with golden-crimson light that instantly spiked the temperature of the dining room.

Sweat gathered along his eyebrows, dripping down his cheeks.

He shoved back his chair and noticed both Willow and Moon were already standing too, watching Solaris on the verge of losing her mind.

"I WORKED HARD FOR IT!" Solaris screamed at the top of her lungs, and a wave of searing hot air exploded outward, slamming into both women and Mars.

Moon and Willow blocked it with ease.

Mars, however, found himself sent flying backward like a kicked football, his back crashing against the kitchen counter.

"Argh!" He groaned, the breath knocked from his chest.

His shirt caught fire, golden and crimson flame eating through it. In a panic, eyes wide with fear, Mars ripped it off, gritted his teeth, and flung it away.

He lifted his eyes despite the pain wracking his back, and saw Solaris’s clothes burning away entirely, her skin left a crimson so intense it looked ready to combust.

The wooden dining table and chairs weren’t spared from her fire either.

"I TRAINED FOR THAT CONTRACT! I TRAINED EVERY DAY TO IMPROVE MY SKILLS! EVERY DAY!" She began thrashing, destroying everything in her path, tears streaking down her cheeks, her eyes looking like miniature suns in that moment, "WHO ARE THEY TO TAKE IT FROM ME! WHO—!"

Then she stopped abruptly, her head snapping toward Mars, still on the ground, struggling to rise, coughing.

Mars’s heart skipped a beat, his eyes widening.

’No...no, come on, fuck!’

"It’s all because of you!" Solaris hissed, the fire around her flaring so intensely it was hard to see her clearly, "It’s all because of you, fucking plebeian! I’ll kill you! I’LL KILL YOU!"

She lunged toward Mars with explosive speed, her hand reaching for his throat, aiming for a killing blow.

She was deadly serious. Solaris genuinely intended to kill him.

However,

"So loud." Willow said coldly, clapping her hands together, and instantly sound was suppressed around them, so completely it felt as though sound had ceased to exist.

Solaris’s mind struggled to adapt to the sudden loss of sound, throwing her off balance. She stumbled and fell face-first to the ground, just a couple of meters from Mars.

But she was already scrambling back up, a scream building that would have shattered eardrums if Willow’s First Aspect — Sound Suppression and Amplification — hadn’t held it in check.

Mars’s heart crawled with fear. Still, he turned his head toward Moon, standing nearby, and pointed at Solaris, about to rise, mouthing:

"Knock her out!" He said, and Moon understood instantly.

She acted fast as Solaris tried to stand. She grabbed a chair that hadn’t burned and...

CRACK—!

...smashed it over Solaris’s head, dropping her back down.

Solaris’s mouth stretched wide open. This time the sound was so overwhelming even Willow’s suppression couldn’t fully contain it.

Moon grinned and kept cracking the chair down on her head, relentless. But Solaris was still conscious, now bleeding, and even angrier.

Moon finally stopped playing around and activated the First Aspect of her Gift — Chosen Poison — and injected the sleeping variant, one of three she carried in her blood, into Solaris’s bloodstream.

Seconds later, with one last scream and thanks to her ongoing blood loss from the head wound, Solaris collapsed, unconscious.

Her First Aspect, Burning Light, deactivated, bringing her dreadful episode to an end.

Silence flooded the kitchen instantly.

Mars’s chest heaved up and down, his hazel eyes still wide as he took in the scene.

Moon and Willow released their Aspects and felt the toll on their mana, especially Willow.

"I think I need to be honest this time," Moon said, breathing hard from exhaustion, looking at Solaris’s limp body, then turning to Mars, "You might not survive this."

Willow said nothing, but her expression was just as grim. Both of them had recognized what happened to Solaris...because it had happened to them before, too.

And during those episodes, they’d done things that made their families more than willing to discard them, like liabilities.

Mars said nothing for a moment.

Then he gritted his teeth, pushed himself up, and approached the unconscious Solaris.

He examined the wound on the back of her head, reached out, touched it, then quickly pulled his hand back.

He looked at his fingers, and saw them scorched red, burned by Solaris’s blood.

Mars clenched his jaw and lifted his head toward Moon and Willow,

"Help me heal her. Bring the medical supplies, I saw some in one of the kitchen drawers." He said, steadying his breathing, "Or if either of you has a Healing Serum, that would help too."

Moon and Willow stared at him, flabbergasted, not expecting this reaction at all.

"Didn’t you just—!"

"I heard you loud and clear, Moon." Mars cut in, "I might not survive, fine. I already knew that. Nothing’s changed except that I now have a clearer picture of what I’m up against."

"And you’re not afraid?" Moon asked again.

"Come on, look at me." Mars said, smiling crookedly, "I’m shaking right now. You can see it. I don’t know anything about any of this. I’ve spent my whole life outside the reach of real power, even though I’ve lived in a world full of it. But what does that matter?"

He lifted Solaris’s head and rested it on his lap.

"You’re my wives now. And I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but the world’s turned its back on both of us. I’m not going to pretend I understand your loss, but this isn’t the time to mourn what’s already gone."

He looked at Moon and Willow.

"We have no choice but to get through this together, if we want to actually live."

"I hate these women." Moon said immediately, wincing.

"I hate them too." Willow added.

"You can hate each other. You can even hate me." Mars chuckled hollowly, "But you need to hate the people outside this house more than you hate each other. Now, please, let’s heal Solaris before she wakes up and decides to burn me alive to cope."

Moon and Willow said nothing at first, both realizing that dwelling on what had happened served no purpose. It wasn’t their way, anyway. They had their own means of making these bastards pay.

They exchanged a glance, a dark understanding passing between them, before finally following Mars’s instructions.

"Alright, sweetheart~"

"Ok."

They walked off.

Mars sighed, his expression hardening instantly, jaw clenched tight.

After all of this, one thing was certain...

’I need to get stronger.’
