Chapter 8: Chapter 8: An unexpected twist

Mars looked at the three women sitting at the table in the dining room, which was actually a small part of the open kitchen.

They might not have been given any money, but the house was, at least, very luxurious. Still, Mars needed to figure out whether expenses like water and electricity fell on them, or were already covered by the three families.

’Fuck, is this how adult married men think? Always worrying about what to pay and how to provide for the family?’

Mars was getting scared. Still, he kept it hidden behind a calm exterior as he ate.

Moon sat beside him, while Solaris and Willow sat side by side, across from them.

Mars had expected some difficulty getting them to eat, but it seemed even Calamities knew what hunger felt like.

Solaris only cursed at him at first, calling it plebeian food. Yet she was scarfing it down like a starved beast.

"What?" Solaris snarled, mouth full, bits of food spraying onto the table as she spoke, her eyes glaring at Mars, who was watching her, "The fuck are you looking at me for?"

Mars was slowly getting used to Solaris’s foul mouth. In fact, he found it almost funny, cute even, in a strange way.

’Don’t blame me, I always had a thing for that fiery Latina energy. Both my ex-girlfriends used to curse at me instead of saying "I love you." Well...maybe that was my cue they never actually loved me? Welp.’

He shook his head and refocused on Solaris, "Nothing. I’m just happy you like my cooking." He replied with a smile.

Solaris’s face flushed briefly before she screamed, "I don’t like it! I’m just hungry!!"

Food sprayed from her mouth onto the table. Moon shot her a venomous glare, about to snap, but fell silent when Willow set down her fork with a clatter against the plate.

It was oddly loud. As if the sound had been amplified. Instantly, everyone stared at her, and Mars’s Gift picked up a growing murderous emotion radiating from Willow, directed at...

’...what the fuck????’ His eyes widened slightly.

...everyone at the table.

’Is this woman insane? What did I even do?’

"If you spit on me again, Solaris, I will—!"

CLACK—!

"Now, now, now," Mars said hastily, grabbing the TV remote, "let’s not spoil breakfast, girls. Why don’t we watch the news while we finish eating? Then we can talk about what to do from here."

Moon giggled, and beneath the table, her left hand slid onto Mars’s thigh, gripping it.

Mars’s face twitched, but he held steady.

Right then, the TV flickered on, landing on FRNews, and a bright red Breaking News banner filled the screen for all to see.

Beside it were the faces of...

’...oh fuck!’

...his three new wives, and one blank, empty picture with a question mark.

The presenter’s voice rang out, loud and obnoxiously cheerful.

"This is the breaking news of the day, folks of New France! One we never thought we’d live to see, but praise the Sun, here we are, witnessing it!" The annoyingly ugly man said with excessive enthusiasm, veins bulging in his throat and neck, "The three infamous princesses of the Three Prime Families have been married off to some unknown man from what I’ve heard is a rat-infested hole!

"Per the laws written by the Rightful Guardian, the ruling authority of New France, married women take on the status and privileges of the men they marry! Which means, ladies and gentlemen, that these infamous princesses are no longer True Nobles of New France! Their status slashed by more than half!"

Mars’s heart skipped a beat, his eyes widening as the law finally clicked into place.

’Damnation! How did I not think of this?!’

He looked at his wives, and saw expressions that made his heart clench like a fist.

They looked monstrous.

And the damn presenter wasn’t done.

"We’ve also received word that the modeling agency Victoria’s Secret has ended its contract with Solaris Lightbringer. Same with the music studio Heaven Voice and Willow Rose, and let’s not forget, Moon Skygazer has lost her role in the upcoming film by famous screenwriter Nolan Christopher! They’re doomed! Ruined! They’re—!"

’Shut up, damn you!’ Mars shouted, snapping the TV off, his heart pounding against his chest.

"H-hahah, bad idea to check the news, huh?" He tried to defuse the tension.

But none of the women said anything. They just sat there, staring at the now-blank screen, eyes vacant.

And then something happened that nearly made Mars piss himself.

The temperature began to rise, and Solaris’s face began twisting like a demon’s. Golden and crimson flames flickered across her skin, as though she were a living torch.

’Oh my fucking god!!!!!’ Mars jolted up from his seat.
