Noir looked at the enormous door with curiosity, especially since it seemed to hide something related to dragons.

’Could this be the famous legacy mentioned in the novels?’

The little dragon wagged its tail curiously; the more it looked at the black stone door, the stranger it seemed to him.

The runes engraved on its surface stretched from the base to the top of the structure, forming patterns so complex that just trying to follow them with his eyes gave him a headache.

’Who on earth put so many runes on a door?’ The question immediately popped into Noir’s mind.

However, the structure seemed to have been built by an immensely powerful creature... and the central carving actually depicted a dragon...

So it fit perfectly.

’Yeah. It definitely looks like something a dragon would do.’

The golden sphere floated near the runes, slowly spinning around them.

Noir narrowed his eyes.

’Don’t tell me you expect me to open it.’

The sphere glowed once.

’Because if that’s your idea, I have bad news.’

The little dragon walked to the base of the structure and rested a claw against the stone.

Nothing happened; no light appeared, there were no magical explosions... not even any ancient voices.

’Perfect—just what I expected.’

But the little black dragon had to try again, so he knocked on the door a second time.

The stone didn’t even budge. It seemed as solid as a mountain.

Noir frowned and applied a little more force.

The result was the same.

The door remained motionless.

’Well... at least I tried.’

The golden sphere descended until it was right in front of his face. Then it moved toward the door; afterward, it turned back toward him and repeated the motion several times.

’No.’

The sphere insisted.

Noir sighed, somewhat frustrated; he knew how it would end, but it seemed as though the golden sphere was sadistic.

’All right. One last time.’

He activated [Draconic Claws]. Dark energy enveloped his claws as he dug his feet into the black stone.

An unpleasant screech echoed through the area; when it was over, he looked at the result.

Not a single scratch... not even a superficial mark. The little dragon stood there for several seconds, staring at it.

Then he looked up at the structure. Next, he looked back at his claws and finally at the door.

’...I think he just insulted me.’

The golden sphere spun around, amused.

Noir felt as though his dignity had just suffered critical damage.

For several minutes, he walked through the structure, examining every visible corner. The runes kept repeating themselves over and over in patterns he couldn’t understand.

Some glowed faintly. Others seemed completely dim... but none of them made any sense to him.

That was frustrating for the little black dragon; he knew that what was there was directly related to dragons.

And the answers seemed to be right in front of him. On the other side of that door, he had no way of reaching them.

Noir let out a long sigh. Then he flopped down on the grass.

’Perfect.’

’An ancient mystery that cannot be unlocked.’

The little black dragon turned around and looked at the door; it seemed the mystery would have to wait a little longer until he learned to understand the runes.

’Haah... I have a lot to learn.’

A smile slowly spread across his face; this wasn’t a big deal to him—on the contrary, it excited him.

Since a life without purpose is too boring, the more goals he has, the better.

He recalled the view he’d had from the top of the cliff—the vast valley stretching beyond the trees, magical creatures, crystal-clear rivers, unknown monsters, and distant mountains.

Hidden ruins... And who knows how many other things.

Noir stood up before he could protest in some strange way, flapped his wings, and wagged his tail.

And he began to walk toward the heart of the valley.

Behind him, the gigantic black gate remained motionless and silent.

As if it had been waiting for centuries... And as if it had to keep waiting a little longer.

***

After leaving the stone gate—which likely held many secrets related to dragons—the first surprise came two hours later.

Noir was walking through the glistening grass when he caught a sweet, strange scent. It didn’t come from any animal; it was more like the smell of ripe fruit mixed with mana.

The golden sphere fluttered excitedly and shot off toward a nearby tree.

’Ah, right. You’re that suspicious tour guide again.’

The tree was enormous, its trunk covered in blue moss and its branches laden with small silver fruits that gave off a faint glow.

The little black dragon’s Draconic Senses reacted immediately.

...It was mana.

A tremendous amount.

Noir approached cautiously and sniffed one of the fruits.

’If this kills me, I’m going to haunt you for the rest of your life.’

The sphere spun innocently.

The little dragon plucked a fruit and took a bite.

’!!’

The flavor exploded in his mouth.

’This tastes amazing—I’ve never tasted a fruit as exotic as this before.’

Noir was surprised by the flavor; it was sweet, fresh, and slightly electrifying, as if he were chewing on a cloud full of energy.

The fruit’s mana was absorbed almost instantly. A warm current coursed through his body from his stomach to the tips of his wings, replenishing his mana reserves.

’...Wait.’ Noir opened his eyes suddenly; his gaze fell on the fruit he had taken only a single bite from.

The little black dragon decided to experiment with taking another bite of the magical fruit.

[The unique Skill Devourer has been activated.]

After activating his ability, Noir took a bite of the fruit, and the reaction was immediate; much of the fruit’s mana further increased his resistances... but it also slightly strengthened his body.

His smile grew wider; indeed, the ability had extracted some of the fruit’s essence to strengthen him.

’This... this... It’s incredible!’

He felt that if he kept eating the fruit and growing stronger, he would finally be able to speak before long!

Over the next few hours, Noir set about experimenting like a particularly irresponsible scientist.

He tried more silver fruits.

Then, some blue flowers laden with mana.

Then there were some crystal-clear roots growing near a stream.

Some tasted delicious.

Others tasted like wet dirt.

And one of them tasted so bad that he almost spat it out reflexively.

’Who the hell designed this thing?!’

The sphere spun as if it were laughing.

Even so, the result was clear. Every time he consumed something with a high enough concentration of mana, the Devourer ability absorbed some of that energy and slightly strengthened his body.

It wasn’t as effective as devouring powerful monsters. But it didn’t mean Noir had to try to rip its head off, either.

This was a considerable advantage.

Noir lay down by the stream and watched his reflection in the water.

He was still a small, plump black dragon.

But the scales seemed shinier than before, and his mana reserves were much greater; he even felt he could use the spell, Dragon Language, without fainting.

The sphere landed on one of his horns.

’Don’t give me that smug look. I’m the one doing all the work.’

The sphere emitted a particularly offensive flash of light.

’What do you mean by ’I found the food’?’

The sphere flashed again.

Noir decided that arguing with a possessed lamp was a waste of time.

They continued through the valley. And the more they explored, the more evident it became that this place was special.

The trees grew to absurd heights. The water in the streams contained a slight concentration of mana... even the stones glowed faintly at dusk.

It was as if the entire valley were imbued with mana.
