As he explored the magical valley, Noir plucked another of the strange flowers growing by the stream.

Unlike the crystalline root he had tasted before, this plant gave off a pleasant scent—something like mint mixed with fresh rain.

The little black dragon watched it for a few moments; he was curious about what the flower would taste like.

’Well... there’s only one way to find out.’

He took a bite. The flavor exploded in his mouth immediately; it was cold, as if he were chewing on tiny snowflakes laden with mana.

Noir swallowed and waited.

The energy coursed through his body rapidly. The sensation was familiar by now. The plant’s mana was gradually absorbed by Devourer, which slightly strengthened his body and increased his mana reserves.

However, this time something different happened: a notification appeared before the little dragon’s eyes.

[Analyzing consumed resource...]

’...Huh? What’s this?’

Noir blinked in surprise; it was the first time a window like this had appeared.

’Could this be a new system feature?’

The screen remained still for several seconds; then, a second notification appeared.

[New magical resource registered.]

’What the heck is this? Why is the system showing me this right now?’

He was still somewhat in shock; from the looks of it, he wasn’t prepared for the next window that popped up in front of him.

[Iceleaf Flower]

It grows in areas with a high concentration of water mana. Its petals contain cold elemental energy that can speed up mana regeneration.

’...’

Noir stood still, blinking a couple of times, as if what he was seeing were out of this world. Then he looked back at the flower he was still holding in his claws.

Then he looked at the screen... and finally looked back at the flower.

’...Excuse me?’

’Since when can the system do that?’

The notification continued to float in front of him, and after a few seconds, the screen disappeared. Noir chuckled to himself.

’Don’t tell me the system could do this from the start.’

The golden sphere flashed, seemingly amused.

The little black dragon felt as if something inside him had just snapped.

’And NO ONE THOUGHT TO TELL ME?!’

He picked another flower from the same cluster and quickly devoured it... Nothing happened; no notification appeared, just the usual absorption of mana.

Noir tilted his head slightly.

’Wait...’

His pupils narrowed.

’Does it only display information the first time?’

That made sense; after all, the system had already registered the plant, so devouring it wouldn’t make any difference.

The thought made the little dragon’s breathing quicken slightly. If this worked with all magical species...

So the Magic Valley had just become a lot more interesting; a smile spread across his face.

Noir had just discovered that the system’s new feature would be a huge help to him and was a perfect fit... well, like a ring on a claw.

Because he had just obtained something very valuable... an encyclopedia.

It was a way to get to know this vast world into which he had been reincarnated.

And if there was one thing that abounded in that world... it was the unknown.

The golden sphere spun with excitement.

Noir lifted his head and looked out at the vast valley stretching out before him.

’All right.’

His eyes sparkled with excitement and a hunger for knowledge he had never felt before.

’Let’s see how many new things I can eat before something tries to eat me.’

***

The afternoon wore on as Noir explored the valley.

Every hour seemed to bring a discovery.

Some plants contained absurd amounts of mana. Others turned out to be completely useless. He even found a kind of blue mushroom that exploded into a cloud of glowing spores, almost as if it were trying to bite him.

The golden sphere spun for several minutes, seemingly unable to stop laughing.

’It wasn’t that funny.’

The little dragon sneezed one last bluish cloud.

The sphere glowed even brighter.

’Traitor.’

They continued on their way alongside one of the many streams that ran through the valley.

The water was so clear that Noir could see tiny, glowing creatures swimming among the rocks at the bottom.

The whole place seemed straight out of a fairy tale.

And the more he observed his surroundings, the more convinced he became that the Magic Valley was much more important than it seemed.

It wasn’t just a region full of mana.

It was a completely different ecosystem.

The trees were gigantic; the plants were brimming with magical energy... Even the air seemed alive.

Noir moved forward slowly as his Draconic Senses scanned the surroundings.

He detected several monsters. But none of them posed a real threat.

...At least not yet.

The little dragon was beginning to relax when something caught his attention.

It was a very faint sound, like distant bells. Noir lifted his head, and the sound repeated itself.

This time, it was much softer and more melodious... and strangely beautiful, too.

The golden sphere seemed to notice it as well.

They both turned their gaze toward a higher part of the valley. There, beyond a hill covered with bright flowers, something moved amid the bluish mist.

Noir stood motionless.

For a moment, he thought he had imagined the figure.

Then he saw it again—and this time, clearly.

His breath caught in his throat.

The creature slowly emerged from the fog.

It was enormous.

Much larger than any monster he had ever seen before.

Its body resembled that of a majestic deer, but it was covered in dark fur that shone like a star-filled night sky.

Tiny points of light traced their way across its body, like living constellations. Two enormous crystal horns rose from its head; they seemed to be made up of hundreds of translucent fragments that reflected all the colors of the valley.

Every movement produced a sound like the ringing of bells.

The creature walked slowly up the hill.

The flowers bowed as it passed.

The grass glistened.

And the mana of the surroundings seemed to gather around it, as if it recognized it.

Noir forgot to breathe because that was, without a doubt, the most beautiful creature he had ever seen since he came into this world.

The golden sphere remained completely still.

Then the creature’s eyes slowly opened.

Two silvery pupils.

And for a split second... they looked straight at Noir.

The little dragon felt a chill run through his entire body.

Because he had the strange feeling that the creature hadn’t just seen him.

It had recognized him.
