I Reincarnated As A Dragon With A Devourer System
Chapter 27: The "Monster-Mehind-Me" ClichéNoir was in shock when he realized that there was something familiar about that creature’s eyes, as if it knew who he was.
But... How was that possible? Was this his first time in this magical valley? Were the creature’s eyes special?
The little dragon’s mind was filled with unanswered questions, which only heightened his frustration and excitement.
At first, he thought he had been reincarnated into a fantasy world, complete with all the typical isekai clichés... but after just a few months of life in this world, he realized he was wrong.
Noir knew that wasn’t the case; the thought that the world was full of mystery only intensified his desire to explore it fully.
’That really is incredible: new things are always popping up, but where is my wife, you demon? Or a half-human companion who’s a clumsy mage?’
He chuckled to himself at how absurd his thoughts were. He immediately turned his attention to the creature.
The evening light reflected off its crystalline horns as tiny glowing particles floated around its body.
Noir didn’t even blink.
For a moment, he forgot that he was in a world full of monsters, dangers, and absurd abilities.
It seemed more like a spirit than a beast.
A being that shouldn’t be able to exist.
’It’s beautiful...’
The idea just popped into his mind.
And the worst part was that he didn’t even particularly like deer.
But that creature was different.
The constellations that ran across its fur seemed to move slowly beneath the surface, as if a tiny night sky dwelled within its body.
The deer raised its head slightly. Its silvery eyes continued to watch him from a distance. There was no hostility... only curiosity.
However, the sense of familiarity had vanished, which threw Noir off balance.
’Was it just my imagination?’ He was sure he had felt that when he looked into the creature’s eyes.
How did that suddenly disappear? He had no way of knowing, and the little black dragon wasn’t about to dwell on something with no answer.
Noir took a step forward, so slowly that it looked like he was in slow motion; he looked like a cat when it spotted its prey.
With every step he took, the sound was almost imperceptible; all he could hear was the faint rustling of the grass as it bent.
The only thing he could think of was that everything he was seeing was a hallucination caused by having unknowingly eaten hallucinogenic mushrooms.
’Will it let me pet it?’
The sphere turned toward him; clearly, it didn’t like him. He knew the little dragon’s intentions: to devour him.
Noir cleared his throat. He couldn’t believe the golden sphere saw him that way; he wasn’t that kind of dragon.
’Besides, there are scientific reasons.’
He just wanted to devour a little bit of it... just a little bit—a leg, a piece of hide, something that wouldn’t be too outrageous.
He wants the information for his new encyclopedia.
Then something strange happened. The creature’s ears twitched. Its entire posture changed. Its muscles tensed.
And for the first time since he’d seen it, Noir felt uneasy.
’...What’s going on?’
The deer was no longer looking at him... It was watching something behind him, hidden among the trees.
’...Seriously? I’m about to get the "Monster-Mehind-Me" cliché.’
He didn’t have time to laugh because his Draconic Senses reacted immediately. Noir felt a sense of alarm course through his entire body; his scales bristled; his breathing slowed.
...And an unpleasant sensation welled up in his chest.
It was a sense of danger he had never felt in his short life.
The stellar creature took a step back, as if preparing to flee.
Noir swallowed hard.
If something could make a creature like that nervous... He probably didn’t want to know either.
A crackling sound echoed through the forest, and the small stones on the ground began to vibrate with increasing intensity.
As the seconds passed, the vibration grew stronger and stronger, and in the distance, the trees could be heard creaking.
Something enormous was moving among the trees. Something so big that the roots were trembling underground.
’Nope.’
Noir turned around immediately; he wasn’t going to stay there; he wasn’t a dragon stupid enough to think he could beat whatever was approaching him.
’I don’t need to know what it is.’
The little dragon began to run away—quickly... very quickly because he had learned one thing from all the books, movies, documentaries, and more.
When a creature as mysterious as it is majestic decides to run away... You run away too, and don’t look back!
’I’m not like those hot-blooded Japanese protagonists who think they can always get away with anything while building a harem where... Damn it! They always end up with a princess!’
Noir tightened his grip with his claws to force his way into the forest and escape; his breathing echoed loudly in his ears.
And, to make matters worse, the wind seemed to hold him back, and he could only watch as the golden sphere whizzed past him at great speed.
’Wait for me! We’re soulmates!’
However, the little dragon wasn’t fast enough... and the problem was that the thing had already detected them.
A roar echoed through the valley. The sound was so powerful that it made the air vibrate.
Noir felt his paws freeze for a split second.
And that was enough.
A gigantic shadow descended from the treetops; tree trunks exploded, and earth was hurled into the air.
A huge creature landed between him and the escape route.
Noir stopped abruptly, and his pupils contracted.
’...Oh shit.’
The creature was monstrous, more than four times its size. Its body was covered in black, obsidian-like plates. Six legs ending in gigantic claws dug into the ground. And long, crystalline spines grew from its back, glowing with a sickly red light.
Its yellow eyes immediately locked onto the small, plump black dragon.
...Not on the stag.
On Noir!
The little dragon remained motionless.
’Good.’
The beast slowly opened its jaws. Rows of fangs appeared one after another.
’I think we just had a little misunderstanding.’
The monster roared. And it lunged straight at him.
Noir felt the mana coursing through every part of his body and simultaneously activated [Draconic Claws] and [Stone Hide].
Heat began to build up in his throat, and his heart was pounding.
’Why is fate so cruel to me?’
Noir could only watch as the fanged ice bucket, filled with saliva, drew closer and closer.
