I Reincarnated As A Dragon With A Devourer System
Chapter 28: I Don’t Want To Die AgainAs he stared at the huge monster, Noir had no time to think.
The enormous jaw came crashing down on him, like a mountain, capable of swallowing an entire elephant.
His Draconic Senses exploded into a storm of warning, to the point where he didn’t know what to do. It was the first time he’d ever sensed such danger; every scale on his body was screaming "danger."
The little black dragon, using all its strength, flapped its wings.
The gigantic jaw snapped shut right where it had been just a moment earlier.
BOOM!
The ground exploded under the pressure of the fangs. Fragments of rock and roots were hurled in all directions.
Noir landed several meters further back, breathing heavily; once again, he had felt death breathing down his neck—and not in a friendly way.
’...That thing almost made me its dinner. How can it be so fast?’
He looked toward the creature, but his pupils contracted; it had vanished again.
’...Eh?’
His Draconic Senses detected the movement just a fraction of a second before impact. Instinctively, he activated [Stone Hide]. His scales took on their characteristic grayish sheen.
A moment later...
BOOOOM!
One of its enormous legs struck him in the side.
Noir was hurled through the air like a stone launched from a catapult, and his body looked like a rag doll as he flew.
He plowed through several bushes, smashed through a tree trunk, and ended up rolling violently across the ground.
The air was knocked out of his lungs.
’...Shit... SHIT!’
The pain was too intense; every part of his body was screaming in agony; his mouth was bleeding, and several scales lay scattered on the floor. The ability had prevented his bones from breaking.
...But even so, he felt as if his entire body had been crushed, and the consequences were far from minor.
’Shit! Damn it! What the hell was that?!’
Noir sat up with a titanic effort; he hadn’t even seen the creature’s paw. Its speed was ridiculous.
If it weren’t for his Draconic Senses, he would be much more seriously injured than he is now... though he’s not exactly fine either.
The creature moved slowly through the dust kicked up by the impact; each step made the ground tremble.
Several bushes were crushed by one of its paws, while nearby animals and monsters quickly fled the scene.
Noir swallowed hard. For the first time since he’d been reincarnated... he felt fear. A fear completely different from the one he’d felt when facing the first monster in the cave.
That time, it had been inexperience; now, fully aware... he knew exactly how much stronger that monster was.
And that made it even worse.
’...I can’t win.’
The little black dragon knew this all too well—which was painful—and he was also aware that he couldn’t escape; the monster’s speed made that abundantly clear.
However! He couldn’t just sit there and wait for that creature to finish him off either; some part of him refused to go down like that... you could say it was his pride as a dragon.
The heat began to build up in his throat. Noir opened his mouth; the flames shot out like a torrent of fire; they were much more powerful now that the place was teeming with mana.
WHOOOOSH!
The gigantic creature was quickly engulfed by flames, momentarily turning into a living torch.
The nearby trees began to burn, and the temperature rose sharply.
For a few seconds... Noir thought he had succeeded.
’Did I hurt it...?’
The flames enveloping the creature began to dissipate slowly; the black obsidian plates now showed only a faint reddish hue.
’...’
Noir felt something inside him snap.
’...Seriously? Are you kidding me? Not even a single fucking scratch?’
And to make matters worse, the monster didn’t even seem bothered; it just tilted its head slightly, as if it had just felt a warm breeze—no big deal.
’...That was my strongest attack.’
The little black dragon’s breathing began to quicken as his body tensed; he shook his head... he couldn’t let fear paralyze him.
He clenched his claws tightly and activated [Draconic Claws] once more, and they took on a dark glow.
Channeling mana throughout his body, Noir flapped his wings with all his might; his small body shot toward the monster’s face.
It was a desperate gamble.
...But it was the only thing he could think of at that moment.
The creature didn’t even dodge.
Noir unleashed the full power of his claws against one of the black plates.
CLANG!
The metallic clang echoed throughout the valley; a shower of sparks flew between them, creating a gust of wind that sent all the leaves and branches in the vicinity flying.
The little black dragon’s red eyes widened in terror; his claws... hadn’t pierced the armor. Damn it! They hadn’t even managed to leave a visible scratch.
The creature slowly lowered its gaze toward him.
For what felt like an eternal second... Neither of them moved.
The entire forest seemed to hold its breath.
Noir felt the air grow unbearably heavy. Even the murmur of the nearby stream had vanished. Only those two, staring intently at him, existed.
His legs were shaking with sheer terror.
’...I’ve just made a terrible mistake.’
Every instinct in his body was screaming at him to flee. To run, to fly—to do anything! But no command reached his muscles.
It was as if its own body had accepted a truth that its mind still refused to grasp.
The creature’s muscles began to tense slowly beneath those black, obsidian-like plates. The crystalline spines on its back emitted a faint reddish glow as the ground creaked beneath its weight.
Noir’s Draconic Senses flared up; in a desperate panic, he felt an icy lump tighten in his throat.
For the first time since he had been reincarnated... he understood what it meant to face a creature far superior to him.
His abilities didn’t matter.
His pride as a dragon didn’t matter.
Not even how much he wanted to live mattered.
Faced with that existence...
’...I don’t want to die again...’
The thought popped into his head before he could stop it. His heart was pounding so hard he could hear it in his own ears.
Then...
The creature flexed its six legs.
And Noir understood, with terrifying clarity... That the next attack... Wasn’t going to hurt him.
It was going to kill him.
