Noir watched as the claw came down.

On pure instinct, his wings spread wide, and he flung himself to the side just as the powerful claw struck the spot where he had been a moment earlier.

CRAAAAASH!

The ground exploded on impact.

The shockwave hit him even from several meters away, knocking him off balance. He rolled across the grass as his Draconic Senses tried to track the creature’s every move.

The creature lunged at him again.

Noir flapped his wings and rose just a few meters above the ground. He needed space and, more importantly, time to think.

One of its six giant legs struck the trunk of a nearby tree.

The tree split in half. And the upper half was hurled straight at him.

’What the hell?!’

Noir activated [Stone Hide] and extended his claws to try to protect himself from the impending impact.

BOOM!

The log struck with brutal force.

The little dragon was sent flying once again, passing through a cloud of leaves and broken branches before crashing into another rock.

Pain shot through his body as several scales flew off. Blood began to form a small pool beneath his claws.

The creature wouldn’t give him a moment’s respite. The crystalline spines on its back began to glow a deep red.

The Draconic Senses screamed in warning.

’That’s definitely not good!’

Noir opened his mouth and launched another attack; the flames struck the monster as it advanced without stopping.

Some of the fire spread to the vegetation, and several trees began to burn.

The forest turned into a chaotic scene of smoke, sparks, and burning branches.

Noir took advantage of the curtain of fire to move.

He ran through the trees while activating [Draconic Claws] to make his escape easier and avoid falling.

If he could find... an area better protected by nature... perhaps he would have a chance to escape and survive.

The creature charged through the flames like a nightmare; it closed in on Noir like a raging bull, seeking its victim.

The little dragon, knowing he couldn’t escape, spun around quickly, channeled most of his mana reserves into one of his hind legs, and slashed with all his might.

SLASH!

This time, he actually managed to do something.

A thin line appeared between two slabs of obsidian, and a few drops of dark blood fell to the ground.

Noir’s attack had worked; that brought a small, proud smile to his face without him even realizing it.

...But that brief sense of victory didn’t last long; it vanished, just like when you blow out a candle.

The creature’s tail lashed out like a whip.

Noir barely had time to shield himself before the powerful blow struck.

BOOOOOOM!

The blow was devastating.

The little dragon shot through the forest, knocking over bushes and snapping branches as it spun wildly through the air.

His vision blurred, and blood filled his mouth. He managed to steady himself just in time to see the creature charge again.

Noir landed on a rock by a stream and gathered all the mana he had left.

The flames concentrated in his throat, his claws glowed a dark hue, and his hardened scales began to crack from the continuous use of [Stone Skin].

It was his last attempt.

The beast roared, as if accepting the little black dragon’s challenge, and the crystalline spines on its back lit up completely.

And then it fired.

ZZZT!

A beam of red light shot through the forest.

Noir unleashed his Dragon Breath at the same time; the flames rapidly closed in on the red beam of energy.

The two energies collided mid-air. For a split second, it seemed as though they were evenly matched.

Then the red beam tore through the flames as if they were paper.

Noir’s eyes widened.

’Oh... no.’

The impact hit him full force.

A deafening explosion shook the valley.

For a moment, the little dragon felt as if the whole world had vanished. His body was hurled forward like a projectile, unable even to control his flight.

He crashed through one thick-trunked tree, then another, as splinters of wood and fragments of rock flew off in all directions.

Each impact sent a new wave of pain coursing through his entire body.

His vision began to blur.

He didn’t know if he was spinning, falling... or being swept away by that absurd force.

Then...

SPLASH!

His body slammed violently against the surface of the stream. The water surged several meters before swallowing him whole.

The current swept him among the rocks as tiny bubbles escaped from his snout.

A trail of blood slowly spread through the crystal-clear water, staining it a dark red.

Noir tried to sit up. His legs gave way after just a few centimeters, and an unbearable, sharp pain shot through his side.

His left wing hung limply, unable to obey him.

Every breath was torture. Every breath of air seemed to pierce his chest as if he were breathing in broken glass.

The golden sphere appeared beside him, spinning frantically. Its glow flickered desperately as it tried to stay by his side, as if searching for some way to help him.

Noir could barely keep his eyes open.

Everything looked blurry.

The sky.

The trees.

The sphere.

Everything began to fade slowly into the distance as the roar of the water drowned out every other sound.

The little black dragon slowly turned its head toward the forest and gazed at it...

The enormous creature didn’t even turn its head toward the little dragon; instead, it sniffed the air. Its six legs struck the ground just once.

And it disappeared into the trees, heading toward the star deer it had encountered before it all began.

Noir remained motionless. The stream’s cold water continued to surround his body as he struggled to breathe.

His pupils dilated in disbelief, as if he didn’t understand what was happening.

’...What...?’

It took him a few seconds to realize it.

’...I-It wasn’t after me.’

He remembered every attack.

Every blow, every time he thought he was fighting for his life and that the creature was targeting him.

...But the truth was that it seemed as if the little dragon wasn’t even paying attention to him; a dry laugh escaped his throat.

’...Shit.’

’This thing...’

’It wasn’t even looking at me.’
