The icy water kept slapping Noir’s face as he barely remained conscious.

The stream’s current was sweeping away his body.

He could barely make out the sky through the splashes of water; his vision was a blur as the rocks slammed hard against his hardened scales.

Each blow drew a grimace of pain from the little black dragon, who tried to move but found his body wouldn’t respond at all. He tried to activate [Stone Hide], but that didn’t work either.

In the midst of the battle and exhaustion, he had used up almost all of his mana, so the little he had left seemed to be what was keeping him conscious.

’...No... not yet...’

His consciousness began to fade.

The last thing he felt was another blow against a huge rock before everything went completely dark.

***

Noir first felt the cold.

Then the sound of water.

Next came the pain—a sharp, stabbing pain—that shot through his entire body; Noir slowly opened his eyes.

For several seconds, all he could see was a canopy of intertwined branches and leaves illuminated by the moonlight.

’...’

The little dragon blinked several times; the constant sound of running water reached his ears. He looked around and felt sand—he was very close to the stream.

The current must have carried him to the bank while he was unconscious.

If that hadn’t happened, he probably would never have woken up again.

Noir, making a titanic effort, sat up and moved forward.

’Agh!’

Intense pain shot through his entire body, especially his side, which was the worst affected. He collapsed onto the grass after moving as far away from the shore as he could.

’...I’m still alive.’

That alone was a victory.

He breathed slowly as he examined his body. Several scales were cracked; some had already fallen off, leaving only raw flesh. He could barely move one of his wings.

...The mana that normally flowed through his body was now just a faint thread.

He had never felt this bad before.

’Well, at least I’m alive...’

Noir let out a long sigh, his face contorting in pain. It seemed as if even breathing hurt him.

The golden sphere rushed toward the little dragon at great speed and began circling him frantically, as if it couldn’t believe what it was seeing.

’Ugh... Calm down first; I can’t understand a thing you’re saying.’ For the first time, Noir couldn’t make sense of the sphere at all; it had different kinds of sparkles.

It was as if it wanted to say many things at once but had no way of expressing them, which only made his headache worse—he’d felt from the very beginning as if his brain was about to explode.

’Calm down a little; I’m not dead; I’m just badly injured.’

Noir got down on all fours, striking a powerful pose, and looked at the golden sphere.

’See, I’m as tough as an oak. So stop crying.’

Almost instantly, the little dragon fell to the ground, writhing in pain, which had grown more intense.

The golden sphere clung to Noir’s cheek, even more desperately than before, as if it were on the verge of collapsing.

’I’m sorry, I just didn’t want you to worry.’

The golden sphere withdrew completely, offended by the black dragon’s little joke.

Noir was about to apologize again. And then... his Dragon Senses kicked in.

He wasn’t alone.

Noir’s muscles tensed immediately, and he slowly turned his head. Just a few meters away, on the opposite bank of the stream, a white figure had also just woken up.

It was a small wolf.

It wasn’t much bigger than Noir.

Its white fur was completely soaked, and several wounds covered its side. One of its front legs was visibly trembling as it tried to get up.

The puppy’s blue eyes met the little black dragon’s red eyes.

The silence that settled over them was unbearable, broken only by the wind’s whisper and the rustle of leaves and branches.

The two of them stood completely still; for several seconds, neither made the slightest movement.

...They just looked at each other.

Noir swallowed hard, feeling his body begin to grow cold.

’...Great.’

’A wolf.’

And that only confirmed that his situation was much worse than it seemed, because if there was a cub that small...

’...That means it’s not alone.’

The puppy slowly bared its fangs. A low growl escaped from its throat; it didn’t sound like a threat, but rather like fear.

Noir understood that look almost immediately. It was the same expression he had at that moment.

Because they were both injured and predators. Besides, neither knew if the other would attack first.

’I don’t want to fight...’

The little dragon let out a weary sigh. He wasn’t even sure he could beat a cub in that condition.

The little wolf took a step back without taking his eyes off him; his breathing was rapid, and his ears remained fully erect.

He was ready to fight... or to flee.

Then...

Noir’s Draconic Senses erupted in a violent warning. His heart skipped a beat.

’...No.’

The little dragon cursed his bad luck when he saw that a presence had just appeared.

And it was painfully closer than before. To make matters worse, it wasn’t coming from the stream.

...It was coming from the forest.

The wolf reacted at the same time; its ears turned toward the trees, and its growl faded away completely.

The leaves began to rustle, and the branches began to produce a macabre symphony with each little creak, which seemed to pierce Noir’s soul.

A metallic smell filled the air; it was heavy and wild.

Noir completely forgot about the little wolf. And the cub completely forgot about the dragon.

Both were staring at the same spot in the forest.

Huge claws slowly parted the bushes... Then a head covered in dark scales appeared. The creature’s blood-red eyes slowly scanned the bank of the stream... until they came to rest on the two small, wounded animals.

The monster smiled... a slow smile, and Noir imagined it was sadistic, but that only meant even more trouble.

The little black dragon felt a chill run through his entire body.

’...This can’t be happening. Why at a time like this?’

The little wolf instinctively took a step back and looked at Noir, who understood perfectly the look he was giving him.

For the first time since they woke up... They both understood the same thing.

If they wanted to survive... They would have to stop seeing each other as enemies.
