The little black dragon stood motionless before the mysterious woman, feeling a little embarrassed.

’...Brilliant, Noir.’

’Your first conversation with anyone in this world... and you sounded like a goat with a stomachache.’

The woman continued to watch him, her expression unchanged. Her gray eyes slowly shifted from the little dragon to the wolf cub.

Then they scanned the room; the vials were still in their places, and, finally, so were the books. Nothing seemed to be missing.

The silence began to feel awkward.

Noir slowly raised a claw and made an awkward gesture, trying to appear friendly.

"Gru..."

’I hope that means "hello" in the dragon language, because it’s too late to back out now.’

The puppy, who clearly didn’t grasp the gravity of the moment, sat quietly next to Noir and yawned.

’...Excellent.’

’Now we look like two stray animals, waiting to be adopted.’

The woman took a step toward them. Her black dress made barely a sound as it brushed against the wooden floor. She didn’t give off any sense of menace.

And precisely because of that, Noir was even more nervous and instinctively took half a step back. He didn’t want to seem hostile, but he also didn’t want to end up as a mere ornament in that house.

The woman finally spoke again.

"I don’t remember leaving the door open."

’Believe me... I don’t remember wanting to come in either.’

Just as silence threatened to settle in once more... The golden sphere shot out from behind the little dragon.

’...Huh?’

Noir opened his eyes. His beautiful and magnificent companion, the golden sphere, had come to his defense. Even hell had frozen over.

He almost shed a few tears of happiness; that traitor... it wasn’t a coward after all.

But what happened next completely threw him off balance, as if the whole world had been turned upside down.

Not only did the sphere approach the woman, but it also began to spin merrily around her, as if it had finally been reunited with its friend after a very long time.

The woman, who until that moment had maintained a completely serene expression... blinked in surprise at the unexpected encounter.

Then she slowly raised a hand, and the sphere immediately descended until it rested in her palm.

For several seconds, it remained motionless; then it began to emit small golden flashes. They were gentle and rhythmic, as if they were trying to converse with her.

For the first time, the woman’s eyes lost that distant calm. An expression of genuine surprise appeared on her face.

"To think we’d meet again..."

Noir felt as if something inside his head had just snapped.

’...’

’Wait a second.’

’Do you know her?’

The sphere responded with several rapid flashes.

The woman let out a little laugh... just a smile. But it completely transformed the atmosphere in the room.

"It’s been... many years. But you’re still just as free-spirited and bold as ever. I’m glad to see you again, too."

The sphere spun around her once more before settling back on her shoulder as if it were the most natural thing in the world. As if it had done that hundreds of times before.

Noir watched the scene, completely motionless.

’...’

’...No. No, don’t tell me the floating lamp has friends.’

His brain tried to put all the pieces together.

The sphere knew Chrysola.

Now it also knew that mysterious woman.

And both of them seemed to recognize it immediately.

’...Who the hell are you?’

For the first time since that golden sphere appeared...

Noir felt that perhaps it had never been just a guide.

Maybe... he had been accompanying someone much more important than he ever imagined.

’This is what it feels like to hang out with a celebrity.’

The woman gently stroked the orb with her fingertip. Then she slowly looked up. Her gray eyes rested once more on Noir.

This time they were completely different, as if she were trying to understand why that particular orb had decided to accompany... a little black dragon.

’...I don’t like that look.’ Noir felt a chill run down his scales.

The pup, completely oblivious to all the tension, walked over to the woman and sniffed the hem of her dress.

Then it wagged its tail once.

The woman looked down.

And, to Noir’s surprise, he slowly bent down and stroked the little wolf’s head.

The pup closed its eyes immediately.

It seemed to be enjoying it.

"..."

Noir watched them for a few seconds.

Then he looked back at the sphere.

And finally, he voiced the only thought that seemed truly important to him.

’...’

’Am I the only one here who doesn’t understand a single thing?’

***

A few minutes later.

Noir was sitting on a small round cushion that the woman had left in front of a low wooden table.

The golden sphere rested peacefully on one of his horns, swaying as if that were his favorite spot in the world.

’And you, stop acting like this is your house.’

The woman remained seated across from him, just staring at him.

The little black dragon began to feel uncomfortable.

’Why is she staring at me so much? Do I have a piece of paper stuck to my face?’

The woman barely tilted her head.

"This is the first time I’ve seen such an intelligent black dragon in its early stages of growth."

Noir lifted his chin slightly.

’Well... finally, someone with good judgment.’

"Although you’re also incredibly loud."

’...’

Noir blinked. Noisy? Why was he noisy? He couldn’t even speak properly—he just let out little, embarrassing grunts.

The woman added just as calmly, as if it were no big deal:

"Your thoughts."

The little dragon froze completely.

’...No.’

’Don’t mess with me.’

His red pupils contracted. The little dragon couldn’t believe that he was...

The woman continued speaking with absolute calm.

"Normally, young dragons only convey simple emotions: hunger, curiosity, fear. Which is normal, since they lack intelligence and live guided by their most basic instincts..."

She paused for a moment.

"...But you, on the other hand, think too much."

"..."

Noir felt a chill run down his spine.

’Is she... reading my mind?’

"Yes."

’WHAT?!!’

The golden sphere began to spin around one of her horns.

Noir immediately pointed at it with a claw.

’And you knew this?!’

The sphere glowed innocently.

’Traitor!’

The woman let out a faint smile.

"I can’t read your entire mind."

Noir looked at his again.

"Only what you project outward. It’s a natural ability of my species."

The little dragon breathed a sigh of relief.

’Thank goodness... for a moment I thought she was going to expose all my secrets.’

"Although now I know there’s a huge door that still haunts your nightmares. Was it really that hard to open?"

"..."

Noir felt as if the whole world had just betrayed him.

The sphere spun slowly above his head, as if amused.

’Don’t laugh.’

The sphere was already spinning in the air.

’I said don’t laugh!’

The woman watched the scene for a few seconds. Then she gently rested a hand on the table.

"If this makes you more comfortable..."

A faint wave of mana rippled through the room.

Noir felt a strange tingling in his throat.

Then he heard a voice.

It wasn’t coming from the woman.

It was coming from him.

"...Hello?"

The little dragon’s eyes widened; he could speak—this time without growling.

"Am I talking?!"

The woman nodded calmly.

"Not exactly. I’ve temporarily connected our minds so we can understand each other."

Noir remained completely still.

Then he looked at the woman.

Then at the sphere.

And finally, there was the little wolf, who was still asleep on a rug, completely oblivious to everything.

’...’

’Wait.’

’Does that mean I can finally ask questions?’

The woman held his gaze.

And, for the first time since Noir had been reincarnated... someone seemed willing to answer them.
