I Reincarnated As A Dragon With A Devourer System
Chapter 35: Why Are There A Wolf And A Dragon In My House?Noir stood there staring at the wooden house.
’No.’
’This is definitely not normal.’
For nearly three weeks, he had traveled through the Magic Valley, encountering all kinds of absurd creatures, impossible plants, and phenomena that defied all logic.
But... a house? Not even in his wildest fantasies would he have imagined that something like this was here, let alone in such good condition.
The little dragon knew there were two possibilities.
The first was that the house had been occupied many years ago by some humanoid being—not necessarily a human, but that was the least likely option.
And the second one, which was the most likely.
’Someone lives here.’
Noir swallowed hard.
For the first time since he’d arrived in the valley, he felt a mix of excitement and nervousness. If someone really were living in a place like this... they might be able to answer the questions that Chrysola, the golden dragon, had avoided.
Where exactly was it?
What was the Magic Valley?
And more.
...But was it safe? The little dragon wasn’t stupid enough to go near it. Was he curious? Of course!
But... the risk was also too great to get any closer.
’I’d better turn around and pretend I never saw this place.’
’Umu, yeah, that’s the right decision.’
Wagging his tail contentedly, Noir turned around to continue exploring the magnificent and very safe Magic Valley.
The golden sphere slowly descended until it was directly in front of the door and began to spin calmly, as if that place were completely familiar to it.
Noir frowned, feeling a sense of déjà vu... Yes! When he first met Chrysola.
’...Don’t tell me you knew about this place from the start.’
The sphere emitted a small flash of light.
’Of course... answering questions would be too easy.’
The little white wolf stood behind Noir, watching the house with his ears perked up; he was on high alert.
This reassured the little black dragon a little, and he cautiously approached the door and pushed it open with his claw; the door swung open with a soft creak.
...A stream of warm air escaped from inside.
’...Heat? How can there be heat in this house?’ Noir blinked, a chill running down his scales.
After spending so much time traveling through the valley, the temperature felt almost strange.
It was pleasant and comfortable, like coming home after walking in the rain for hours... Well, he’d never actually had the chance to walk in the rain.
The little dragon slowly crossed the threshold.
The first thing he noticed was the smell.
It didn’t smell like dampness or dust... It smelled like freshly brewed tea, dried herbs, and ancient scrolls, as if someone had been reading there just a few minutes ago.
’Yep, I think it’s time for me to turn around and get out of here.’
The little dragon turned around and went back outside; everything suggested that someone lived here.
But the golden sphere blocked his path.
’Get out of my way—I don’t want to fall for what you always do to me twice. You’re way too treacherous!’
The sphere kept insisting that he stay, because maybe it would be good for him.
’You’re not sure what will happen to me if I stay? How do you expect me to trust you?’ Noir couldn’t believe the nerve of this so-called adventure companion.
The sphere kept insisting, over and over again. It even ended up sticking to his head and flashing faintly, as if trying to convince him that he was in no danger.
Noir sighed.
’If this ends badly... I plan to haunt you for the rest of your life, and I know I’ve told you this before, but I plan to keep reminding you.’
He decided to trust the golden sphere—just this once—since, to be honest, Noir was very curious.
The little dragon scanned the room: the interior of the house.
The walls were lined with enormous bookshelves crammed with books. Some were so thick they looked as if they had been written over generations; others floated slowly across the room as their pages turned on their own.
Glass vials filled with liquids of every imaginable color sat on several tables.
Some glowed with a soft blue hue.
Others contained tiny glowing specks that rose and fell as if they were breathing. There was even one with a tiny black cloud swirling slowly inside it.
’It’s like a wizard’s laboratory...’
The puppy went inside too. First, he sniffed a chair, then a rug. Then he got too close to a jar filled with green liquid.
Noir immediately pushed it away with a claw.
’Don’t even think about drinking that.’
The wolf tilted his head, as if asking why.
’Because with our luck, you’d probably end up turning into a chicken.’
The golden sphere spun around the little dragon several times, clearly amused.
’Don’t laugh. I’m being a responsible adult.’
They continued exploring.
In one corner was a huge map of the continent, covered with notes in elegant handwriting that Noir couldn’t understand at all because he was "illiterate" in this new world.
In another corner lay several walking sticks of various shapes.
One looked as if it were made of ice.
Another looked like it was made of glass.
And one—completely black—absorbed the light in the room in an unsettling way.
Noir could barely tear his gaze away from all those objects.
’How much knowledge could there be here...?’
The little black dragon’s heart began to beat rapidly. For the first time since he was reincarnated, he felt truly close to discovering something important.
Maybe he could even learn magic other than the Dragon Tongue.
Maybe...
Then... A faint sound of footsteps completely interrupted his thoughts.
Tap... Tap... Tap...
The whole room fell silent.
The puppy immediately pricked up his ears.
Noir slowly turned his head toward the back of the house.
A wooden door had just opened.
A young woman with long black hair and delicate silver highlights that fell past her waist appeared from the hallway.
She was wearing an elegant black lace dress and a large dark rose on her chest.
Her skin was so pale it looked like porcelain, and her gray eyes—calm and deep—conveyed a serenity that was impossible to fathom.
For a few long seconds...
She watched the little dragon.
The little dragon watched her.
"..."
"..."
The first thought that crossed Noir’s mind was completely unrelated to the Magic Valley.
’...’
’It can’t be.’
’Did I just find... a person?’
But the mysterious woman’s voice snapped Noir out of his thoughts.
"Why are there a wolf and a dragon in my house?"
The little dragon tried to smile kindly and look adorable with his innocent eyes.
"Gruu..."
