The monster smiled again.
Its many jaws opened slowly as a strange metallic sound echoed through the forest.
’The situation has gotten even more complicated...’
Noir stepped back without taking his eyes off the creature. He had confirmed two things: first, it was absurdly fast, like almost all the monsters he had encountered so far.
Second—and this was what he both hated and envied the most—it had the damned ability to regenerate. It was just too unfair!
In short, neither was good news for the little dragon and his most faithful companion, the white wolf.
The monster’s faint roar still echoed among the cherry trees when it vanished again, leaving behind only a phantom image of its body.
Noir, with his Draconic Senses working at full capacity, leaped backward, and at the same time, his claws took on a dark gleam.
CLAAANG!!
The six wings struck the little black dragon’s claws as if they were enormous steel swords.
The little dragon’s paws sank several centimeters into the ground, leaving a mark the size of a cherry blossom.
’What the hell are those wings?! Don’t tell me it can also...?’
As if in response to his thoughts, the monster stepped back and rose several meters into the air; it spread its wings wide, and its feathers began to part slowly.
Noir’s eyes widened.
’...Oh shit.’
He quickly ran over to where Uki was and activated his [Stone Hide] ability. His scales turned gray.
Hundreds of black feathers shot out, like a shower of endless daggers.
The first feathers struck the hardened scales, as if they were projectiles.
TINK!! TINK!! TINK!!
Several of them pierced the defense.
The little wolf let out a whimper as two black blades made small cuts in his side.
Noir felt something explode inside him. He opened his mouth and felt the heat immediately spread through his throat.
FWWOOOOOOSH!!
A massive fireball swept through everything, burning all the cherry blossoms and, as the temperature rose, charring the tree trunks.
The monster crossed its wings in front of its body; the flames engulfed it.
For a few seconds... Nothing moved.
Little by little, carried by the breeze laden with the place’s mana, the smoke began to dissipate... Then, right in the middle of it all, two enormous wings cut through the fire.
The monster shot out, not a single burn, just a few singed feathers.
’Damn, I already knew this wouldn’t hurt him much, but isn’t this a little too unfair? Why is he so resilient?!’
Noir didn’t have time to dwell on the unfairness; he wanted some of that too. Was that too much to ask?
One of the wings came down like a guillotine, creating friction and a faint sound.
BOOM!!
Noir rolled across the ground just in time, watching the feathers pierce three cherry trees as if they were paper.
The little dragon reacted immediately and once more activated his [Black Smoke Flash] ability. Three projectiles shot out one after another.
BOOM!! BOOM!! BOOM!!
Black smoke completely engulfed the battlefield.
Noir ran toward the barrier she had just created and quickly glanced at Uki.
’Now!’
The wolf understood immediately and, despite the wounds caused by the feathers, also began running in a zigzag pattern.
Both of them vanished into the cloud, almost at the same time.
The monster flapped its wings to try to dispel the curtain of black smoke, but it managed to create just enough of a breeze...
It was too late.
Noir appeared from the left; his claws had taken on a dark gleam. He had used [Draconic Claws] again.
The pup on the right: Uki’s fangs took on a bluish glow and snapped shut around one of its hind legs.
At the same time...
CRACK!! SLASH!!
Noir slashed three deep wounds into the monster’s chest, while Uki completely shattered one of its hind legs.
The creature roared, spun abruptly, and struck the little white wolf with all its might, sending it flying several meters away.
Noir tried to take advantage of the opening and leaped straight for its neck.
But the monster was already prepared; its tail ended in a bony stinger.
WHAM!!
The blow struck the little dragon squarely in the side; several scales flew off, and he felt the air completely leave his lungs.
His body crashed through a huge cherry tree and rolled several times before coming to a stop.
’Damn... I want to get stronger fast. Getting beaten up like this isn’t very pleasant...’
The little dragon’s whole body ached; he tried to sit up, but could barely do it.
In front of him... The monster was already walking slowly. The wounds from his Dragon Claws were fading again, as was the fracture in one of his hind legs.
His regeneration was still working perfectly.
Uki also tried to get up, but the blow had been too strong, and he couldn’t; even so, he kept baring his fangs.
Noir smiled; that’s what a true predator should look like.
’Good boy.’
The monster spread its six wings once more, giving it an imposing presence and invisibility.
The surroundings were shrouded in black.
Noir took a deep breath, gathered mana, and tried to construct a structure like the ones he had learned from Amanises.
The runes began to appear in his mind.
But immediately... His instinct told him to destroy them.
’Not now!’
The structure shattered once more; Dragon Language tried to take control; Noir gritted his teeth.
’No! Not this time!’
The monster vanished and reappeared right in front of him.
All six wings swooped down at once.
There was no way to dodge them, and no time to do so; the little dragon had no way out of this.
Noir closed his eyes and took a breath.
The runes appeared one after another, forming a pattern in his mind; the little dragon’s red eyes opened.
’...I did it.’
He extended a claw forward.
’Water Blade.’
SHIIIIING!!
A thin sheet of compressed water materialized in front of him; it wasn’t huge or spectacular, but perfectly stable and absurdly sharp.
The blade sliced through the air just as the wings came down.
SLASH!!
The monster’s three front wings were cleanly severed from its body.
Black blood covered the cherry blossom petals; the creature let out a heart-wrenching roar, and its attack lost all its balance.
The remaining enormous wings slammed into the ground on either side of Noir.
In front of him, the monster staggered backward as it tried to regenerate its severed wings.
The regeneration was beginning... But it was much slower.
So much slower.
Noir slowly raised his head. A weary smile appeared on his face.
’It worked.’
Of course, he wasn’t going to waste this opportunity, and without wasting any time, he leaped at the monster and sank his teeth into it.
